  • Enhancing the New Player RP Experience

Maybe it's just me, but I feel kinda lonely when I first join - without knowing where to go it's difficult to find others to RP with. I was thinking that if we replaced the fountain in the center of that area with a little park area (inc. benches) that players might use that area to sit around and talk on occasion. New players would near instantly have PC interaction upon joining the game (assuming they don't fall off the dock and drown).

    Just a thought..

    Its a nice surgestion!

Feel free to PM one of us who are on! I know I for one like it when new players ask me for a little time Most of us have new character on the go (or on the mind) so its really no bother if you need a guide, companion or just a few hints.

I try to make my way down to the docks from time to time when I see somebody down there (sometimes offering them work). Its a really nice region although it does lag me up a bit. All the roleplaying loiters hang out in the region just beyond that.

After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box.

The port is a really under used, atmospheric and beautifully crafted area of the server. It's the first thing you see when you join Sundren and it's your first impression. The one that sets the tone of the place, the atmosphere and gets us hooked.

I have always thought it is sad how we don not re-visit it more after the initial purchase of basic gear and the initial look around for static quests given there.

I would love to see a rest area in the port, making it one of those 'one transition', 'jump to' areas where players can gather and meet up whilst resting and roleplay or decide on what to do.

Maybe there could be some more ocean based areas transitioned to via boats where there could be quests, challenges and content with pirate theme. I know there are loads of people who love the idea of buried treasure and swashbuckling the high seas.

This would bring higher levels back through the port and give it some life.

I'm with this guy. I think that using Port Avanthyr as a hub for area transitions to islands, or whatever place the DMs or Saulus would have in mind would get a lot more activity flowing through the town.

Actually, I just want cool islands to go to. I don't know if it would actually help the interaction with newbies. :d

Islands with ruins on them perhaps to appeal to not only your swashbucklers but also to archiologists, crafters and arcanists?

That would be awesome! That aside, when's the last time you say someone fishing by the port?

Having the port as it is isnt nessicarily a bad thing, I understand someone can be lonley when they first start the game , but sometimes haveing that quiet moment before someone is walking up and saying " hello" gives players a chance to release how the world works, whats going on with it, and a chance to customise their character a little bit before they get thrown out there in the world. My suggestion to helping newbies find more RP may be to have an easier way for them to get to the Exigo trading post? There is usualy SOMEONE hanging around the campfire , or someone trading or what have you. Maybe have one of the first NPC contacts mention the post or what have you?

Ps: Islands would be cool, but having ealrier soultions then new lands for newbies may be a good idea

I haven't been everywhere on the server yet, but the port is one of my two favourite settlements (the other is Rangers' Outpost). But I too go to the Exigo outpost to find people, and like on many other servers, I think that what I'll say next is true here too.

People don't meet in the port because it's a 'city' style area with paved streets and such. Exigo, on the other hand is a small rural bit of civilization where benches and campfire and trees are so welcoming. In this sense virtual world is not that different from real world: in a small village two strangers are more likely to say hello to each other than in a big city. That's the reason I usualy dislike big cities on PWs, they are just too daunting, too big and lonely. Trust me, if Port Avanthyr looked more like Highcliff in the original campaign, people would hang out there.
I prepared Explosive Runes this morning.

There's a lot of internal things we are planning, even for places like Port Avanthyr... however the dev workload right now is quite high.

In Sundren there are a lot of things left as-is because we have something planned but you can't see it yet... things like the ships

For new players though there's the search for players tool on the Sundren menu. If you don't have the location unlocked they are available through the quests, or following another player with the follow option.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Saulus, that is so not cool to tease us with.

Damn you, now I'll have to start thinking up a pirate.

The Port is one of the most beautiful areas on the server, to be sure. Sadly, it's also the one that crashes me the most and has the most severe FPS.... hopefully it's all better now after the migration

Pre-migration I had horrible lag in the port area that made the game relatively unplayable. Post-migration, I could swear I was playing locally. There was no stutter whatsoever - even while running down, through the rain, from the light house while keeping my camera in a position where I could overlook the entire port.

And I must agree - while I haven't played much on NWN2 yet - the area is full of win. Props to whoever designed/created that area.
