  • Regarding Wizards and their Familiars

A short, stout dwarf clad in wizard robes sits cross legged next to a warm camp fire. Roasting a chunk of meat over the fire, he gulps his ale in enjoyment. "Aye, cooked meat was invented so dwarves can have something to eat when we drink ale", he mumbles. He swallows a bite of his meat and looks around at those sitting around him. "Let me begin my lesson then, mates" the dwarf says as he gazes at the faces of those who gathered to listen to him.

"Aye, it's not often that you see a dwarven wizard, but I have studied arcane arts at Candlekeep under some of the finest mages of Faerun", the dwarf continues. He takes another gulf of his ale and burps loudly. "Today's lesson was brought about by a serious of unfortunate events that happen to me just the other day. You young aspiring wizard take special heed of this lesson as it covers the special link that you share with your familiars. Those other ones who are present pay attention also so in a future you might now the proper way to treat a wizard's familiar." The dwarf pauses to chew on some more meat and take a few more swallows of his drink.

"Now... just the other day I was resting at this exact camp when a daft girl attacked by beetle familiar. For that she got a good hit by this here axe that you seen in my hand. I wasn't planning to kill her, but she needed a lesson given to her on wizards and their familiars. She tracked me down in the caves later and threatened to kill me, which caused me to send her to talk to the Essence of the Night... I think you all know damn well what I am talking about.... but I digress.... What is a familiar you may ask... A familiar is a creature that has been summoned to service by a wizard, after which it becomes a magical beast and gains new powers. They are magically linked to their masters, in some sense, practically existing as one being. Pay attention to the key words here... magically linked and one being..... Familiars and their master share an empathic link with one another that allows them to communicate, because of the link the familiar is an extension of the master's being, which means that when a familiar has been somewhere or experienced something, the master has the same connection to it as the familiar has. So, when the stupid girl hit my beetle she made me experience the same pain and fear for my life that by familiar was experiencing. Now I ask you, if someone is hitting you with the intent to hurt you do you just stand there and do nothing? Now imagine your familiar being attacked and because you and it are practically exist as one being you feel the same pain that it does. Will you just stand there and do nothing? So, mind all of you that when you attack or in any way harass or maim the wizard's familiar, you are making an attack on the wizard itself. I don't know about the rest of you, but I won't stand idle while my persona is attacked."

With that the dwarf takes a gulp of his ale, closes his eyes, and drifts off to sleep.

All the people around the camp look at each other, then back to the Dwarf. One man can't help but comment,

"You're telling me that you had a huge bug following you around, and someone tried to step on it, so you hit them with an axe... and they're daft? I step on bugs all the time! Is someone gonna run me through with a spear?" the man asks in a tone giving disbelief.

"Wait wait wait..." another man pipes up, "How do we know the difference between bug we should step on and wizard bugs?"

Another man begins to chuckle, "You ask them of course! Everone knows wizard bugs talk!"

The first man responds to the chuckle, adding in his own sarcasm, "But what if the bug starts talking and won't shut up. I mean, we can step on it then, right?"

One after another they add jokes to the Dwarf's story, carrying on with silly antics. The Dwarf suddenly becomes the center of a joke. However, finally another man says plainly, "Best to keep your bug in your pocket, if you don't want it stepped on. That's my advice."

The dwarf listens to all the jokers and watches them through his half-open eyelids. He rolls over to face the wall of his tent and mumbles "These fools know not what they do... they know not what is coming their way... These ones will be the first ones to be marked for Velsharoon when he descends over these forsaken lands... Praise me to Velsharoon" With that the dwarf falls alseep once more.
