  • Petition Against Martial Law

*Notices are posted outside various establishments all over Sundren*

People of Sundren, we are being done a great injustice! I am posting this note on various establishments all over Sundren to petition against martial law. You may think that martial law helps protects the people of Sundren, but in truth we are having our freedoms taken away! I too once thought that martial law would benefit Sundren, but after months of injustice I've seen happen to others, I finally seen it happen to myself.
I was tending to my duties at the Exigo Trading Post as a Blackwood member, when suddenly I was approached by a legion officer and was demanded to do dangerous mercenary work for her free of charge. I refused of course, and was thrown in jail, without trail on a truimph up charge(obstruction of justice). Being a mercenary, we make our living getting paid doing these kind of work. If we don't get paid we starve. So I decided to file a complaint to one of their superior officers. She said she will investigate, and assured me that the matter will be looked into, and that justice will be served. But really, justice was not served. She dismissed the matter completely saying that her underling broke no law due to martail law. If so, all legionares(even lowly recruits who joined recently) are not subject to any of the laws we common people have. With a "do what we say or get punished" policy, how is that any different than what Bane preach? Stand up with me and speak out the injustice you have suffered! Do not be a victim to further injustices that may befall you! If it hasn't happen to you, it still can in different forms, having your property seized, being sent to your death in battle, or worst! As a well respect and admired champion of the people, I will stand for this no longer, and so shouldn't you!
If you are against this injustice, send me letter at the Blackwood Headquaters in Aquor. Make sure to have your signature and it is meant for this petition against martial law. You may also include stories of injustice suffered by this law if you wish.

Champion of the people, Kyle Rendell

"Hmm, comparing the Black Hand to the Legion. I can't say the comparison isn't warrented, but I wonder how long these'll last up before the 'Iron Fist of the Legion' decides that she dosen't want to be compared to the 'Iron Fist of Bane'. It'll be fun to watch her explain censorship to the people."

A plain looking fellow drops off a letter at the barracks,

      "Grandmaster Rendell,

I too believe it is long since past time to revoke the martial law. The laws that exist are for the good of the people, and recently I have seen and heard things that do not reflect this sentiment at all. The Legionnaires are our protectors, this is true. They are made up of our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters. However the law is meant to set a standard that is higher, that is not subject to the individual whims of its enforcers.

The law is meant to be a standard that all citizens, enforcer or no, are subject to under the guiding principles of Mundus. The times are tough, this is true. Things are dark on the horizon, and it is only through our ability to live up to a set of principles beyond our own that we will be able to weather the coming storm. I am in full support of your petition, and the idea that no man or woman is able to circumvent the law or due process.

Law without equality or justification is tyranny, as the Black Hand is all too aware. Let us not wallow in the same filth as they."

The Legionaire in question is seen tearing down notices when she has the chance, and telling people her side of the story.

"What the Blackwood mercenary fails to note is that he informed me that he sent a young man on a mission that he himself was too chicken to do. He sent the young man into Shar's land, which is a certain doom for some. When asked to accompany me to rescue the young man, Kyle refused admitting that he was not going to risk his own hide.

He in fact asked to be taken to jail."

The young Legionaire then huffs angrily, and storms away with a few of the notices under her arms to be thrown away.

Under every petition that Ryland comes across she scratches out Champion of the people and writes in "Champion of himself because he needs to be paid to get off his fat arse!"

Centurio Blackwell happens across one of the 'petitions,' removes it from its placement, and then promptly submits it to the Legion's hard-working clerk. "I think the upper echelons - perhaps even the Arbiters - might want to take a look at this one," she remarks to Jones before turning to resume her patrols. "Please ensure that they receive it."

In several locations around the safer and more traversed corners of the vale, the following notice is affixed in plain view wherever the Brigadier's papers have been defaced. While each epistle remains unsigned by name specific --- bearing only the Espruar for "shadows' bane" --- the script is of feminine work and those familiar with Lasvi's handwriting can point it out in but a glance.

I have respect for men when they realize they are men first and Legion second, but many exist who abuse the authority trusted to thine hands at the expense of others. While there are enough occasions to count on the goodly citizens serving in the Legion, plenty more occur which discredit the government.

The subjugation of one's will by another, be it through law or otherwise, is an act of obedience that sires tyranny. I do not appreciate any of my freedoms barred by virtue alone, but more than this do I not condone man's personal law overriding that of the divine. We have been given law astride our very breath of life.

If martial law cannot be abolished, then perhaps it would be wise to further elevate the most hallowed Church of Helm within the ranks. I claim to be of no understanding what His Holiness the Watcher expects of His clergy, but surely a great blasphemy it be to the spirit of unbiased order that heretics persist without hindrance.

Bestow unto them lawful superiority as is their god-granted right, the ability to enforce the law to the highest degree unchallenged, or be seen akin False anarchists yourselves. Law formulated by the Evenhanded, enforced by the Vigilant One, protected by the Loyal Fury, and its subjects nurtured by yon Crying God. It is what I should trust.

Myrios Lacriox pinches the bridge of his nose, one of Kyles posters laid out on the desk before him.

“We loose the Stand, Myrios Gorst, Caspar of the Three, Centurio Twilight along with almost the entire twelth, and some bloody minded mercenary decides to call the lot of us members of the Black Hand? I've a mind to have the fool hung as a traitor to the state.”

“Calm yourself Isaac” A wan faced young officer sits at the side of Lacriox's desk, his uniform dark and unbadged “You'd simply be proving his point.”

“I know that Fallow. Doesn't mean I can't be tempted.”

“If you really want him to suffer a fate like that then it could be arranged. Even a good horseman might be thrown and break their neck and we all know how dangerous a business being a mercenary is. All those swords and knifes in the chaos of combat.”

“We'll have none of that Fallow. Just have a word with his employers, a few words from the Noble families in Aquor might shut his mouth. Blackwood wouldn't be keen on having one of their own men threatening their contracts with the noble houses and Thayans.”

“As you wish sir, I'll send someone to have a quiet chat latter today.”

                  “Good, do it quietly.”

“As always sir. There is one thing I must ask however.”

                  “That is?”

“This petition sir, when it arrives upon your desk, ensure a copy is forwarded to me. It always pays to know who is willing to proclaim themselves in opposition to the state.”

“Fine, you'll have a copy as soon as I do. Let us move on to more important topics.”

“Of course. You may be aware sir that the Everwatch has begun to mobilize its forces for the march North....”

After coming across one of these notices, Nathan only shakes his head, especially at the comparison with the Banites. After hearing the story from the Legionare in question, he himself would make sure that people of the city get her view of the story aswell, all while tearing down other posters and trying to avoid her reputation going bad.

Doc reads the lengthy petition notice and furrows his brow.

"Hells if I'm signing my name. I done seen their brand of law in these parts - thars a reason we got to hold our own out in Sestra. Puttin' my name down only serve to bring attention we don't need. Reckon ink don't bring change - it's blood. When the streets run red with wounded protesters, I'll be there to patch 'em up. Ink don't do shit."

Kale would note all the torn down postings of the petition he had seen earlier, and simply laugh quietly to himself.

"What fools, simply trying to hide what they don't want said instead of trying to prove it wrong. It seems proof of any kind truely is beyond their grasp. They really do make it all simply too easy."

Kale would then walk back to his room, humming a soft tune to himself.
