  • Wolf attacks in Virdale

A warning is sent to all woodsmen, hunters, and adventurers as they travel to Virdale forest. The wolves lately have been roused in an unnatural fashion and have been seen attacking everything on sight. Gnolls included. A pack of extremely large size rushed the Legion fort and the beasts didn't even shy away from fire as they usually did.

An alpha wolf was sighted in most of the brazen encounters. It is not its size, but it's reddish fur with black fist sized spots which adds to it's queer appearance. Whispers around campfires and drinking tables say the beast is a deific force, similar to the moonshae gods, though some veterans say that the description sounds more like the war dogs the Bloodmaim dye and decorate... and train to be vicious.

Ryland Padant reporting to Captain Rixen:

I see from the carcasses the wild dogs have attacked here too. I spoke with an injured gnoll who told me the attacks began when they killed and ate someone or something named Pinky. According to the gnoll their chief invited it into their camp before Pinky insulted the chief and the gnolls turned on Pinky and at him, err it, I mean whatever it was. The gnoll became untalkative so I ran it through. You should warn those passing through here to Viridale that the wild dogs are everywhere and attack on sight.

Rixen takes the report stoically while the few members garrisoning the fort stack up the slain wolves and set them alight.

See to it that it's known that the wolves are said to be lead by some sort of demon dog. One of the druids claims that it a smart bugger and not bred in the natural way. I saw it myself. Not that big, but the thing ripped through five good men. I want you to know that we're putting up a bounty for 'Big Red'

Local trading posts put wolf pelts up for a reasonable price after a well armed hunting partys took up the hunt for 'Big Red' and returned with enough skins to clothe an army of giants. Tales vary, some bragging to have already killed the beast, but were never quick to show off their reward. Some even foolish enough to try hand in the heads of Dire wolves that were soaked in blood after a savage fight.

One rumor that has the most consistency was of a motley hunting party that struck out of the legion and braved the woods during the dead of night. They returned by dawn, tired, haggard, and possibly with a good case of fleas, and enough wolf pelts to sink three Luskan trade Galleons. Their tale takes them through the woods, with wolves at every step, and in many cases having encountered devious attacks and ambushes. It was said that the orc stronghold housed at least fifty, no a hundred of the savage beasts, and during the raid the Red Hound, or 'Big Red' was seen in the fight, but had fled wounded.

After driving off the wolves from the orc fort, they tracked a trail of blood along the path Big Red was seen fleeing, but it led to a pile of empty and broken potions bottles that had once contained healing liquids, as well as the Gnoll Chieftans head amongst the debris. Big Reds trail went cold after that, having fled deeper into the woods.

Later reports from other hunters say that the wolves are still more agressive, but are now leaving the Gnolls alone, apparently now that a new chieftan has risen in the ranks of the Mossclaw.

Ryland huffed pulling the sleeves of his tunic down over his arms, "I know it sounds crazy but I am telling you the red one talked and," Ryland lowered his voice so only Captain Rixen could hear him, "don't you suggest that I may be ill again. I know what I heard." Ryland practically glowered at Captain Rixen before calming himself, "Think about if for a minute. It is speaking and rallying animals to its aid so given the facts I don't think what I am suggesting is out of line at all."
