  • The Petition

Many of the middle and lower class citizens of Sundren, along with those in the Sestra area petition to make some kind of Church of Myrkul.

Recent divine events have put Myrkul back in his seat as Lord of the Dead, and since this time people have had nightmares, or even seen his avatar in graveyards... things that prove beyond a doubt that the Reaper himself has returned to instill fear into the common man.

While priests and followers of the waning deity Kelemvor still exist, they have now become somewhat of a liability. Most of the common people now perceive Kelemvorites with some disdain, as any association with the false god of death might earn them scorn in the afterlife.

Of the priests whose ideals was to the Lord of Dead, many converted to Myrkul... but also there were many who did not. The shadows of their church extend farther and farther, and many Kelemvorites have disappeared... either having fled or been quietly assassinated.

Fewer people seem to go to the Kelemvorite church, and some families refuse to have their dead buried there for fear they might end up in some kind of purgatory.

Some speculate the Kelemvorite Church may end up going away entirely if things get any worse and the people riot in fear.... and replaced with one to Myrkul and his scribes.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Every day, a woman clad in the uniform of the Corps de Grāce takes place in front of the temple, defending it as per her orders.

Any citizens passing by could hear her argue in favor of Kelemvor, explaining that it is their faith that can help Kelemvor beat Myrkul. She asks them if they truly wish to fear death once more, if they have forgotten that Myrkul is an ally of Bane, and that Kelemvor does not stand alone in his fight.

Johanna never loses her cheerful demeanor, however, using her ever-present smile to try and inspire the townsfolk not to fear the future.

The days labor done, two men head to a local tavern in Sestra. Passing by the Kelemvor temple, the commoners clutch their cloaks tighter around themselves avoiding any shadows and scurry past while watching fearfully for the appearance of any apparition. Reaching the Rusty Tankard safely, they choose a seat and order a few drinks. Soon after the usual argument as of late breaks out.

"I'm telling you we have to act if they don't!" "While they sit around debating this and that, we got Myrkul looking down at us and he ain't happy 'bout Kelmvors temple sitting over here in Sestra."

"Well the Church of Kelemvor has always been good to my family, period!"
A mug is placed back on the table harder then it should and heads turn toward the two men. They fall silent and finish their drinks before ordering another round.

"If Kelemvor was strong enough then Myrkul wouldn't have come back at all."

The other man remains quiet staring into his mug.

" Think how we could get in His favor if we burned the place down."

"Shut the hells up!" "Don't you talk that way around me!" "Are you crazy!"

"Well what are we going to do then!" "We can't just sit around, the Bone Lord is taken over whether we like it or not and this town is gonna be raised flat if we don't get in His favor."

They both drink from their mugs avoiding looking at the other. A shaking hand places a empty mug on the table top. The man leans forward and he says softly to his companion.

" I know one thing for certain. I don't want to die any time soon."

Assisted by the dark-clad officer of the Corps de Grāce, Valten, Johanna climbs onto the Kelemvorite temple. Once on the roof, she unfolds a thoroughly defaced banner of the Necropolis, and hangs it out - showing all passer-by's that the fight is far from over!

When on the ground, she looks up, to ensure it is clear that the banner is obviously defaced, so as not to let it give the wrong impression.

The initial whisperings surrounding this Myrkul absolutely puzzle Joasem. I'm no priest but this doesn't make sense. I know enough about the gods to know their power comes from faith. Prior to this incident, I knew absolutely nothing about this so called "Lord of Bones," yet even I knew a little bit about Kelvemor. So how could this forgotten god overpower another that was well known and respected across all of Faerūn? Something isn't adding up.

Joasem shakes head as he continues up the stairs in Aquor leading into the Thayan Enclave and his rented room. I think a visit to a priest might be in order. Perhaps someone from the Triumvirate can explain this better to me.
It is better to try and fail than to never try at all. Those who never try are cursed to wonder what might have been.

Constantine thinks on the current situation and thinks that it is high time the Triumverate take a stand and tell the people to side with Kelemvor.

"We must stop the lord of bones and his ally Bane, at all costs!"

All over Sundren, commoners eye the Kelemvorites with looks of fear and suspicion. Their words like drops rolling off a rock, are dashed before the terrible fear of Myrkul's retribution. Kelemvor's church begins to report that their powers are lacking in strength, fearful looks between his priests only add to the confusion and discomfort.
I am death, come for thee. Surrender, and thy passage shall be... quicker.

It is the duty of the clergy to counsel. Glyir aids Fali in tending to Whurest.

"The Bone Lord has held sway before, and the Fallen attended their Lord's hall in Dwarfhome. He shall not bar you. The Morndinsamman ever watch over their children and shall guard your passage to the Halls of our ancestors."

"If you feel uncertainty, even fear, then know that I understand. Fear is part of the test of this mortal realm. Fear is a tool to be used, not a Lord to rule over you. Accept it and harness your fear, so that you shall remain alert and not falter in battle."

"Know that only by turning away from the blessed Morndinsamman, would you risk falling into the clutches of this 'Bone Lord'. Be strong in your faith, and know that the stout folk shall endure in this world and the next, as we always have."
