A courier delivers a package to Byrun, should he be found. The envelope and its contents are plain, bearing no especial marks other than the sender and recipient's name. Inside the small package, there is simply a pair of multigrain blueberry scones, dense and heavy, their nut-studded surface cooled from the passage of time.
The letter appears worse for wear, bearing the crinkles of a hand fretting over it far too often. In contrast, the inked handwriting is crisp and stiff, with a few jagged edges.
Byrun,
I hope this letter finds you well. The scones are likely not the best food you have eaten, but I assure you that they will keep for some time and they are not poisoned. My apologies for not replying adequately the last time we talked. Your request came as a surprise, so I send this letter as an answer.
Whatever you think of me over the times we spoke will not change the fact that I had destroyed any possibility of proper negotiation with your family, and that your word will only go so far, no matter who you are. If I am lucky, my offer will be refused. Otherwise, we both know very well that there are worse things to be subjected to.
My eyes are open, and should the time come, I hope I will be ready. But that time is not now. I will do more harm than good as is, and while it may seem a cruel thing to watch and wait, that is the only course of action I could see that will not cause excessive collateral damage, and I would not be a help to anyone - you, me, or the others - should I fall to what you are already struggling with. I wish you all the best in that battle.
No matter what happens, there will always be room for you when I am around, and should we need to meet, you will have it.
Don't get killed.
