  • A Letter to Centurio Rhimus Ravain

A letter would be delivered to the Chapter House, addressed to Centurio Rhimus Ravain. The letter itself would be painstakingly written in an attempt to be neat, but somehow falling just short. The envelope, however, would bear the seal of the Order of the Norther Watch.

    To Centurio Rhimus Ravain,

My name is Tirones Josephine Tam. I have been enlisted within the Sundarian Legion for a period of one month now. Originally, I am from Cheapside, within the city of Sundren.

I am sure you have no doubt received many messages regarding the events and the Legion policy toward those deemed associated with Margeaux's movement. My own letter, and personal plea, also lay upon that subject. As a daughter of the Cheapside community, I feel the pain of these events very closely. I wish there was another way, but it is not my place to question Legion policy. No doubt wiser men than I passed the decree, with careful consideration of our laws, and the safety of our peoples in mind. My heart breaks, seeing people I once knew hang from the Castrum gallows, but I must accept that these people knew the consequences of their actions.

I am not so foolish as to ask you to try and understand the mind of the truly desperate, or to justify the crimes these people have committed. As a Tirones of the Legion, it is my duty to enforce our laws, not to seek reason within the actions of lawbreakers. But too, Centurio, we are bound to protect the city, the community of people that becomes our family through shared hardship. We, the Sundarian Legion, must be enforcer, supporter, provider and protector. We should not also be the monsters in the dark that the people fear.

It is with that in mind that I humbly seek the permission of the Legion to take the bodies down from the Castrum, and to return them to their families. Sundarian law has been enforced. These people have paid the ultimate price. We, as the Legion, have a duty past that, however. That duty is to try and foster good will amoungst a people that begin to fear us worse than anything that lurks in the shadows. Please. Allow me to take these men and women home, so that their families may mourn their dead. Let the Legion show mercy in this time, by doing what is right, even when we must do what is just.

May the blessings of the Gods be on you always,
Tirones Josephine Tam of the 10th Legion
& Squire to Lord Esmond Aurelianus, Grand Master of the Order of the Northern Watch.
As addendum, Esmond would offer his signature and a brief:

It is the responsibility of those who govern to temper compassion behind the might of law. House Aurelianus will see to the expense of last rites, given only afore-requested permission to let an example be set again. This time, as men as much as soldiers.

Return correspondence is directed to Josie:

    Tirones,

Who is your commanding officer? I would have a word with them concerning his subordinates sending unsolicited letters to senior officers to communicate their opinions as though they stood upon the same station. It's further quite remarkable that any commanding officer would allow their Tirones to question the Emperor's decrees, as though they could hope to understand the strategy and decisions behind them.

Do enlighten me, Tirones. I must educate them, whoever they are.

As to your request, it is denied. I'm sure you have other duties to attend. If not, we will find them for you. The disposition of seditionist corpses, however, is not your affair.

    Vae Victus,
    Centurio Rhimus Ravain
    Tenth Legion
