Matching letters written on red paper and bearing the seal of the Red Wizards are sent to the Whurest dwarves, the Hellstrom Family, and to the Exigo Headquarters.
Friends,
I have heard many whispers and rumors lately, and have been the recipient of many a hostile glare. It seems that many are saying the Enclave is secretly in service to the Hand, and that our mutual defeat at Aquor was somehow a machination of the Red Wizards. I hope I would not have to defend myself to you, our allies, but allow me to say that these accusations are patently false and wildly illogical.
As you may recall, ranking members of the Enclave were knee-deep in the dead with you during the battle, fighting to remove the Aurilites and requiring all our efforts to stay alive and snatch victory. So I fail to see how we are responsible for the arrival of another army, as we are not in the habit of throwing ourselves in front of overwhelming forces. I assure you, had it been a Thayan plot, we would have convinced you to stay and fight that we might see you destroyed and unable to seek retribution against us. Instead, we argued for discretion that we might all live to fight another day. This was, and continues to be, the only tactical choice that could have been made; admittedly, it was also self-preservation.
Now you all see Thayan knights patrolling the streets and believe us to be ruling the city. While I understand how you could jump to this conclusion, I wish that you would first ask for our side of the story. The unfortunate truth is that we are not able to refuse the Hand many requests at the moment, due to their surrounding our Enclave. We need Aquor to be accessible in order to get any business done, and they can easily prevent any and all traffic to the Enclave. As such, we have agreed to the Hand's demands that we use our resources to maintain the city, instead of letting it degrade into pure anarchy. Our knights were seen as a preferable alternative to undead soldiers and Banite zealots, both by us and the general population of Aquor. So yes, we are the de facto rulers of Aquor while a proper government gets established, but that is our burden not our boon.
In closing, I wish to express my belief that we are all ensnared in a subtle ploy by the Hand to make it appear as though we have betrayed you. This would shatter an alliance that had the potential to tip the balance of power in the valley, and it would punish the Enclave for opposing the Aurilite occupation. I have no proof of this plot, and am unlikely to ever find hard evidence, but it seems the only real explanation that I can deduce. I ask you all to maintain your good faith with the Enclave, and I promise you that I will do whatever I can to restore as many of our designs as possible. While we may not have the city as planned, there is still enormous potential for us to all get rich through it. I look forward to your responses and hope we can smooth out these kinks in our plans. Let us not turn on each other now, and instead salvage what we can from this upset.
