  • Letter to the Emperor

The seal of the church of Helm adorns the envelope as it is sent, the scrawl of penmanship ended with the emboldened signature of noble house and rank.

To the attention of Emperor Imperatu Verinus, may the Gods protect him.
    20 Eleint, 1382 DR

The Legion, despite exceptionally meritorious service in its operations defending our territories against enemy forces, have demonstrated a lack of professionalism in the appropriate measures required under the enactment of martial law.
Though in extreme situations it may be necessary to eschew the civil liberties of respected citizenry in order to promote security, such must be done only under a lawful and ordered process that currently experiences a lack of proper oversight.
With current military operations requiring resources and training for the task which the Legion was formed, the defense and might of our Empire, legitimately authorized enforcement of law within Sundarian jurisdiction demands a separate branch. The Church of Helm, partnering with the Triumvirate, have demonstrated the ability to accomplish the mission beyond the call of duty and have conducted policing detail with dedication, valor, and outmost faithfulness.

As such I formally request the following actions:
The duties of monitoring, enforcing, and enacting proper judicial procedures to be officially authorized under their arbitration of the Church of Helm and its Triumvirate partners. The Martial Law enforced by the Sundarian Legion to be repealed, or placed under full audit by the aforementioned parties.

Addendum: I implore Your Grace to bestow unto the Churches lawful superiority as is their Gods-granted right, the ability to enforce the law to the highest degree unchallenged. Law formulated by the Evenhanded, enforced by the Vigilant One, protected by the Loyal Fury, and its subjects nurtured by the Crying God. Such is what one should trust.

BY THE AUTHORITY OF SENTINEL OF THE CHURCH OF HELM:
    Lord Esmond Aurelianus
"Sir, we're surrounded!" "Excellent! Now we can attack in any direction."

After several long weeks, a reply is sent. It bears the crest of House Verinus, and is bound in crisp vellum.

    Lord Aurelianus,

The nature of our troubled times has led many men to actions that they would not have dreamed of considering before the war. Battles constantly plague our countryside, and conflicts frequently arise while placing Our citizenry at risk. We say, and do things that we might not so that we may cope with these conflicts.

Martial law is a difficult measure to instill upon the nation for which We love and cherish. However, it is a necessary one. Our country is at war, and We require our Legions to continue to act in a manner befitting the constant threats We face. It is with regret that Our office must deny your request.

Furthermore, We would remind our subject that it is the Legions who safeguard our laws in the first place from annihilation. Speaking of them as unprofessional, or in any other disparaging way is ill-fitting for a man of your station. We would advise you to refrain from doing so in the future, as is your duty as a subject of this Realm and a holder of Our favor.

Send Our regards to your father, the Patriarch of the Aurelianus household.

    Nos Bello, Pacem Habeamus

    Emperor Imperatu Verinus
