  • Letter Addressed to Whurest

A missive is sent to the Whurest Hold, addressed to the Dwarven Council

    Good tidings,

I am writing on behalf of House Havelock, in service to the Emperor and in his Name, in regards to one Brunus Ironbreaker. We have received word that, despite no threat or physical harm threatened to him, he has visibly tried to assault one of the City's nobles, a Vincent Havelock.

While we would never seek to damage relations between the City and Whurest, despite the lack of any trade, we would demand an apology from this 'Brunus' for his behavior unbecoming the nobility and power of the Whurest Hold. We await a favorable response, and a quick resolution to this matter.

    Regards,
Former Evocati Vincent Havelock V, advisor to the Emperor

Dryn receives Vincent's missive. Tapping the feathery end of his quill against his wintry beard, Dryn sits back in his chair while considering his response.

The candle on his desk is half spent before he begins to put words to parchment.

    Vincent,

On behalf of Whurest, may Stone's blessing be upon your Emperor, Sundren, and its legion.

While your written words are laced with innocence, I have heard a very different tale from Brunus himself. By our accounts, one Vincent Havelock entered the region known as Second Wind and proceeded to slander those present. Refering to them "peons" which were "beneath him", this included Brunus. Verbal assault turned to threats as your noble proclaimed a desire to "weed out" and "ban" those he so found undesirable.

None of our kin, in the honorable conduct of their affairs, are required to suffer such dishonor. It is clear Havelock's intentions were only to inflame and it is no surprise that he discovered what he sought.

The noble houses of Sundren represent their Emperor in all things. Vincent's actions have stained his house, betrayed the good faith between our mighty holdfasts, and has severly impaired any willingness conduct trade with the City of Sundren.

This matter, in its entirety, is now put before Sundren's Emperor. It is unfortunate that he must now demonstrate the respect he holds for Whurest which should have been shown by your house to begin with.

Once complete, Dryn makes a second copy of his response and prepares two missives.

The first he compiles along with a copy of Brunus's testimony (last paragraph redacted), and a copy of Vincent's missive. This bundle he addresses to the offices of Sundren's Emperor. The second letter he addresses to Vincent Havelock V.

Both missives are sent after being sealed with twin insignia, that of Whurest and that of the Skullcleavers.

A single message is penned from the Havelock Household:

        General Stonewhisperer,

It is with sadness that we find your response so hostile on what could be a relatively simple matter to mediate in terms of a quick apology and a shake of hands.

I do not deem this particular incident worth the time of the Emperor, nor do any of his other counselors. Consider the matter closed, and Brunus' access to the City revoked for the time being.

As for the willingness to trade, hasn't the dwarven hold cut off all trade from the City in the first place? Haven't there been rumors of treaties with the enemies of the City? I find it difficult to imagine that relations between the City and the Whurest Hold could deteriorate any further, considering the supposed 'non-aggression pact' that Whurest seems to be pursuing.

What respect should Sundren's Emperor should be holding for Whurest, when their lack of support in the fight against the Black Hand is becoming more public by the day?

These questions I leave to you, 'General' Stonewhisperer. Before any further trade negotiations can be determined, there must be some to negotiate.

          Dryn responds once more,

It is of no surprise that your house would hide these affairs from your Emperor. For only those in shame seek to hide their affairs from their superiors and peers.

Your missives demonstrate the disdain your house holds for Whurest and its officials. If your 'diplomacy' is evidence of the council provided Sundren's Emperor, then we are deeply concerned as bile fills his ears.
