  • To the Council of the Silver Marches

To the honorable Lady Alustriel and the Council of the Silver Marches, greetings in haste.

Since I delivered my report on the goblins and the Exigo Syndicate to you in person, much has happened and some of it very troubling. By now, word has likely already reached your ears concerning the destruction of a vessel carrying several important representatives from the Evercourt. Thus far, there has been no sign of any survivors. The elves here are outraged, as I am sure that many in Silverymoon are as well.

Accusations are already beginning to fly concerning Sundren's security, and the circumstances that allowed a caster free reign to target the elven vessel. While such accusation are generally based in a backlash to pain and loss, there may be some truth in the words. Opinion concerning the Exarch of Port Avanthyr has wavered greatly, and the Port is becoming an increasingly lawless place -- which is a danger to maritime trade relations, as it is currently the only significant deepwater port. Sestra has a dock for smaller vessels, but anything with more than two masts will probably scrape bottom before reaching those docks.

This is an extremely delicate situation, as I am sure that you are aware. Any guidance on what support to lend to Sundren's government, or what accusations or investigations to pursue, would be most welcome.

In other news, the road to the capital city is open to foreigners at last, and the delegation has moved to the new branch of the Four Lanterns just outside the city gates. Of increasing concern is the aggressive disposition of the many gnolls, goblins and orcs that comprise the Mossclaw Alliance. Their numbers have recently swelled, and despite losing well over a thousand of their own to the Order of the Vigilant Eye [report appended] and other adventurers they seem to show no sign of falling back. The forest is enormous in area, and I fear that there may be tens of thousands of such creatures currently within. They may yet be a significant threat to the Marches -- I will begin preparing my next threat report on them.

Send word as soon as you are able. Until such time, I will continue to be noncommittal regarding Silverymoon's response, and I will defer all questions of significance to the Council and the higher-ranking diplomats.

    Respectfully,
    Alandriel Ward.

APPENDED REPORT: The Order of the Vigilant Eye

    Abstract:
The Order of the Vigliant Eye is an organization formed by Kai Nightwind, an emissary from the city of Neverwinter representing that branch of the Lord's Alliance. Currently it numbers fewer than half-score individuals; Kai is reticent to give the precise number. At present, however, it contains fighters that are among the most experienced to be found outside the Red Blades and the higher ranks of the churches of Sundren and its government.

Organization: Uncertain. However, Kai Nightwind is in solid command of the organization, and appears to have the unquestioned loyalty of all of the Order's current members. How rank is determined among the others is uncertain; however, an individual known as Vesher Hammerfall appears to be the closest thing to a second-in-command. He is a master of the scythe and his combat prowess is becoming something of a local legend.

Goals: The Order of the Vigilant Eye seems to be a rather vigilante organization, dedicated to combating threats to Sundren's well-being but not especially beholden to any of Sundren's existing authorities. This allows them the flexibility to do things that the Watchknights and Red Blades cannot; however, it sometimes runs them into trouble with both authorities and enemies beyond their capability.

Assessment: Given the current reactive stance of most of Sundren's defenders, a proactive organization such as the Order has a great potential to benefit the land and combat certain threats. On the other hand, the potential for abuse of power does exist. I recommend that I maintain existing friendships and relationships with members of the group to act as a voice for our interests in their actions without formally committing to Nightwind's authority. Anything of value to the Marches will be passed along.

They currently seem to be in no need of funding, or at least have not made the request.

    APPENDED REPORT: Lights of Aurora

    Abstract:
The Lights of Aurora is a prospective organization that paladin of Lathander and city guard Daniel Reyer is looking into founding. Thus far, it remains an abstract idea; as far as I am aware, no formal commitments have yet been made. The organization's goal seems to be more geared towards assisting individuals in need than in smiting threats or evil creatures, although there will doubtless be overlap.

Organization and Goals: As of yet uncertan. Private Reyer has been involved in considerable controversy of late, and so the organization appears to be on hold until some of it is resolved. More information will be forthcoming.

Asssessment: Daniel has asked me to convey a request for funding, in exchange for intelligence from the organization. He seems to be a thoroughly moral individual, which has its positives and negatives, but I doubt that he would cheat the Council out of any gold. However, given the extremely nebulous nature of the organization at this date, I am recommending a noncommital response from the Council until the goals and members of the Lights become more clear
