  • Dwarves: The Ogresbane

Heavy metal footfalls filled the caverns narrow passageways and harrowed the coming of the warband of dwarves and their mighty warhog. The clanking was even in rhythm and made Herfg clutch tightly to his warclub causing his nuckles to go white. With a glance and nod over his shoulder to his smaller companion he braced himself against the cave wall at the entrance to the larger cavern hoisting his hammer over head ready to smash one of the tiny invaiders as they marched past. With all the clanking metal and his nerves on edge he didnt hear one pair of feet leave the cadance and take a quicker pace.

His beard covered in gore and small patches torn away Aerum Warhammer was a sight to see. His twin waraxes held at the ready on each side as he ran. Bloodlust filled his eyes and he just knew there had to be more in the cavern that the tunnel was emptying to. His corded and powerful muscles propelled him with surpising speed as he seperated from the main contingent of the three other dwarves and the werebore he had affectionatly named Tusks.

His strong legs took him right past the enterance of the chamber just as a rush of wind caught him. He came to a skittering stop and rounded aboutface to see the cause of the disturbance and a great wicked grin found its way onto his dirty and smudged face.

Herfg snarled and bared his wicked teeth in frustration as the dwarf narrowly evaded his deathblow and dragged the large club accross the cave floor in a sweeping strike at the bold dwarf. Ah Hah! He felt a rush of excitement as the passing edge of his hammer clipped the dwarfs armored shoulder but to his dismay the dwarf willingly accepted the partial blow and spun with it to disapate its strength. He immediately began to raise his club for another strike when a small axe planted itself painfully in his right shoulder. He grunted at the impact and glanced over his shoulder to see that he had moved infront of the caverns entrance and a host of dwarves and a fiersom boar were now charging toward him. With renewed haste he decided it was time to finish this little whelp that was in front of him.

He spun just in time to see the foul dwarf pass right between his legs and with each of his axe arms crossed he cut out to his sides hacking heavily into the ogres legs and with two loud pops the beasts hamstrings were cleaved and he fell to his knees. The echos of pain erupted through his mind as axe after axe from each of the warband assailed him. He forced open his eyes through the pain to see his smaller companion watching in disbelief as his larger ally was hacked into oblivion. A powerful tusk drove into his side impaling his heart and thankfully his pain ended and all was black.

The dwarves clanked on triumfantly from chamber to chamber eleminating any ogre resistance they came to. Even groups of six or more of the beasts were no match for the five dwarves. Ironforge, Ironstar, Deli, Warhammer, and Stonewill marched on, covered in head to toe in ogre gore. The count was up to seventy and from the looks of each of the combatants it had been a tiring seventy. Even Warhammers bloodlusted eyes were becoming less resilient as the many wounds and fatigue began to set in on him. They marched their way towards the exit finding little more than corpses as resistance. Their formation had become loosened on the way out and easily twenty or more paces separated most of the pack.

Warhammer was still on point his twin axes held on the ready as he scoured the cave ahead for any unseen perils or potential prey. A dwarven scream decidedly feminine made him spin around to see each of the column doing the same. It was Ruby.. He gripped his axes powerfully and with all the strength he had left he forced himself down between the pair of companions behind him back towards her cries. The boar was first to arrive and set onto the green skinned ogre that had blasted Ruby with a powerful fireball forcing her to cry out in pain as much of her skin was burnt horribly. Tusks rutted and thrust his deadly maw at the ogre but couldn't break the wicked creatures focus as it completed another arcane pass and caught the stumbling red headed dwarf with a raw combustion of flame. Her cry was much quieter the second time as the fire swept over her and she collapsed to the floor.

Warhammer saw her fall and with his bloodlust renewed charged up and hacked wildly at the wicked caster. The remaining two dwarves were quick to arrive with Ironstar leading in with his towershield. The ogre fell quickly, but the damage was done, Warhammer replaced his axes to his belt and ran to the charred dwarf maiden's body. He saw her face twinge slightly causing a crack in her blackened features. He quickly scooped her up and ran towards the exit meaning to get her to the temple as quickly as possible. His muscles were exhausted and he wasn't able to push himself much faster until he felt a surge of renewed.. no.. New strength wash over him. He looked over his shoulder to see the boar raise its head and snort. He didn't know what it had done but it felt like it told him to go.

As his new strength carried him from the cave he heard the clash of steel and flesh once again as his companions meant to leave his escape clear of pursuers.

The priest worked his magic fervently sealing and healing wound after wound. His aids were applying potions and salves to the burnt dwarf causing her feminine features to slowly resurface through the charred exterior. Warhammer sat propped up against a column watching them work. His muscles were completely wore out and his breath couldn't seem to be caught but he waved off any of the churches aids that drew close to him. Bah, jez leave me be! Ye place be needed ore dere ye gnit! *pointing to Ruby* Smacking the attendants leg as they came close to tend his wounds and hope to wash some of the filth and stink away from the unhygienic dwarf.

Some hours passed and she finally came to, her features restored and her fight re instilled. The other dwarves arrived in time and informed the pair that the fight had been won and in all seventy and six of the brutes lay dead. It had been a fine night and now Five Dwarves deserved the title of Ogresbane.

The last thing Ruby remembered she was being burned alive by one of those foul breathed nasty ogre wizards. She could smell her own flesh burning and the searing pain before her nerves went numb from shock. Before her vision faded, Ruby had seen the other dwarves in the warband, headed by Warhammer, running back trying to save her from the consuming flames. She prayed to Chauntea that they could only make it...
    ************************************************** ****************

Ruby found herself in a domain of pitch black vaguely aware of the pain her body was in. She could hear the buzz of chanting in her head.
"Great, now I be 'earin things as well."
Ruby felt a slight tug on her core...then there was a more persistent pull. She felt her soul fly back into her body thinking "Now them Ogre wizards 'ave 'ealed me just tah torcher me and 'ear me screams of pain." She awoke and tried to jump up quickly to defend herself as best as she could. Ruby vaguely recollected making connection with something firm yet soft as she kicked to her feet. It took her a moment to take in her surroundings to realize she was in a temple and that there were no ogres about. Blinking in confusion and trying to clear her eyesight, she notices a priest on the floor rubbing his jaw that is already showing signs of swelling and bruising.
"Oh my, did I do dat? I am so sorry father. Please fergive me."
The priest nods acceptance of the apology and stalks off to attend to others in need. Ruby hears some guffawing off to the side and when she looks, there is that wet dog smelling dwarf Warhammer;although his smell now has an underlying smell of body odor almost overcasting the wet dog. He seems amused at her confusion and battering of the priest. He informs her of what had befallen her in the ogre caves and that he had ran head long out of the caves with the others protecting his backside as he rushed her to the temple. He seems a little out of breath, yet amused. She looks down at her arms and sees the final marks of the burns fading. Except there seems to be one little spot of scarring in the shape of a star (*) that remains on her inner wrist just below her thumb ON HER LEFT WRIST as a continual future reminder of what she had suffered in the caves and the rescue Warhammer had done for her.
"Me thanks fer yer 'elp an' me life. I will make sure dat me 'usband, Gloirin, knows of dis dat you 'ave done fer us."
    ************************************************** ****************
The two head back towards the forest and the caves to see how the others haVE fared after Ruby and Warhammer had to make a quick exit. It turned out that a few hours had passed since she had been initially attacked by the magical fire and that the warband had accomplished of clearing seventy six nuisance ogres from the caves.
