  • Strange lights in the Hills....

(An excerpt in the life and times of Malis Grymm AKA Terry Waters)...

"...So here I was trying to apply my trade in the streets of Sundren, seems everyone is lacking with the economy these days, even the nobles didn't have a few gold in their pockets. So I headed back to the hills to take what I could of the goblins there...seems that's my only recourse now seeing as how Grayhm at the outpost seems to have filled his quota on goblin ears. Hell I brought him the former chieftans head and now I'm out of any work with him and Exigo it seems, what kind of crap is that I ask!
Anyway, scowling at him as I passed their small camp on my way into the hills once more for what little loot I could possibly find from the goblins, I'd noticed some strange lights far away in the distance, intrigued I pressed on. After having entered the foothills I was set upon by the Spittlefist gobbies, of course I had everything under control (maybe a couple minor wounds, but nothing of consequence to be sure)...when flaring lights flew past me and struck the goblin I was currently dealing with. It fell to the ground curled and charred with two, still glowing, holes in its chest from where some type of magical smoke arose with a stench. I quickly turned to glance at the source of the lights and found bearded human I believe he was, armed with a staff making circles in the air with his hands and chanting at my next vicitim...needless to say I was not to be outdone and rushed towards one of the goblins who held a bow with a confused look on his face.
Rushing forward, well I guess you can't outrun magical projectiles, I was beaten to this confused goblin and saw as he was struck by three of these lights even before I could gain 15 feet towards him...and I'm a pretty fast guy, even for an elf *big grin*! Seeing this I changed direction and set upon the little guy with the crossbow, quickly taking him out with a thrust of my rapier and a quickly followed upper slice to its chin with my dagger. Needless to say he fell to the ground clutching at his throat and gagging on what he would say was blood as it spewed out through his clutching grasp.
After having noticed maybe I'd taken a few more "scratches" than I'd initially thought I realized I needed both some rest and a few sips of the nasty smelling concoction I bought from the Abbot at the Temple of Helm in Sundren. As I did these things the man approached, cloak fluttering in the wind as he did while holding his staff in one hand and holding his hat upon his head with the other.
I first spoke to the man in the civil tongue, eh I know I'm not a great example of our people and I tend to be a little more humanistic in my love of the coin but hey I still am of the noble elvish blood and quite proud of it. Needless to say he didn't understand a word I spoke so I lowered myself to the common tongue and greeted him. We spoke and confirmed our belief that maybe we should head into the hills together to investigate the strange lights and introduce the local goblins to whatever nasty makers had created these folk.
The humans name was Redd and it seemed we worked quite well together and proceeded through the hills, taking goblins down quite nicely together. Seems even though Grayhm and the Exigo had told me they were no longer interested in me working for them, they'd hired Redd as I noticed he'd collected their ears and such and inquired about the newest chief of the Spittlefist and his interest in taking his head. Damn the Exigo! I don't know what I'd done to lose my work with them but it seems I had offended them somehow since I couldnt make anymore coin with them.
Anyways, this human, Redd and I finally got near the entrance to the goblin caves and found the source of the strange lights we'd been following...it was a swirling mist of magic...Redds comments were of beauty and awe, while I had the chilling thought this was some doorway that could let some abyssal spirits set upon us without notice...Redd enveloped himself in the lights and felt inspired it almost seemed with the resonating energy in the area while I saw there was no coin around and in that case saw nothing but possible disaster in the lights themselves with no payoff for anymore investigation. So I continued around, all the while keeping my eye on the lights...after Redd had bathed himself quite happily it seemed in the presence of these strange lights we continued towards our prey and of course ended the sentries lives quite quickly.
Finally some pay-off for this adventure...I noticed a locked chest and of course had to investigate...Making sure Redd wasn't looking I hurriedly unlocked the simple device and saw inside a rather descent sized pouch that held my true quarry...gold coins! "Nope Redd, nothing here either" I said apparently upset...while I hid the pouch quickly in my own pack..."Boy this really was a waste...."
Just then Redd was set upon by two shadowy figures who'd come from this circle of swirling lights, Redd fought barely strikning the figures as his staff passed throught their ethereal bodies for the most part. I quickly knocked and arrow, doubtful of whether I could actually hit these things and fired. The first arrow simply passed through the figure with no harm being done while my next shot actually seemed to affect the creature and while it soared through its ghostly visage it seemed to slow momentum as if it was flying through liquid or something as it passed through the creature. ....yeah it seemed to bother the shade and the spectre turned and set upon me...
Needless to say Redd and I turned and ran, knowing full well we were outmatched and that at any minute an army of these things could come flying out of the lights and set upon us. We ran back down the foothills until the shades halted their pursuit.
Stopping and resting after the pursuit just out of range of sight I guess for these things we noticed they entered the lights once again and were gone...now I know those goblins are hiding more coins so of course I had to go back and get them. Redd agreed and admitted the magic lights may be a bit more malevolant than he'd first thought so we hurried around them and into the goblins abode...
After having simply entered the cave the last thing I remember is a blow to my head...
Working...
