  • The Fires that Burn

A word or two more passed through his lips as he pointed a finger in the direction of the pack of goblins and their substantially larger gnoll companion meandering about the established roadway. In an instant a bright ball of fire leapt from the end of his hand and flew directly toward its intended recipient. One unfortunate goblin was able to see his impending doom as the fiery ball flew directly for his group from the dense forest some distance off the path, too quickly for any manner of dodging. Half of a frightened scream made its way to the creature’s lips, just before the ball exploded into a bright blaze, fully engulfing all of the beasts. Master Pentec stood there, a wicked grin splayed across his aged face he chuckled as he watched the fire devour his chosen quarrel, “Oh.. how they burn.” He mused to himself. He had chosen his place of ambush well and was concealed mostly behind the tree and nearby bush that he had released his merciless blast from.

As the fire dissipated into nothingness and the trees branches with their singed leaves near the road settled back to their relaxed position he no longer heard the cries of agony and screams of pain. Pentec’s smug expression and look of wicked satisfaction was quickly replaced with one of frustration. The large gnoll of the group, now badly burnt stood defiant; his scorched comrades lay as burnt husks at his feet. His large form was smoldering with most of its fur burnt and singed. It howled in anger as it kicked one of the dead goblins, sending it sailing a few yards before it thudded to the roadway and skidded to a stop. He was lucky enough to have closed his eyes before the blast could have stolen his vision and began to quickly survey the area around him, searching for the cause of the blast. His search was interrupted as he felt a powerful blast in the small of his back, followed by two more singeing and painful bursts. As excruciating as the blasts had proven the gnoll was quick to turn around his primal fury made him ignore any pain he endured.

“You stupid and bothersome beast!” Pentec said in a surprisingly calm tone all the while slowly shaking his head, his eyes narrowed at the troublesome creature. The gnoll didn’t understand what the wizard had said, but it wasted no time in pushing out with all of its surprising strength and charged toward the now fully exposed wizard. It’s clawed feet digging deep gouges into the dirt with each powerful stride that brought it closer to his target, the man with the snowy beard and hair was standing was now exposed! Pentec smiled at the display of fury as he began casting again. He stood with his arms crossed casually across his chest the bright red of his robes making him a easy target in the open area just to the side of his concealed location. The gnoll closed the forty paces quickly and leapt up in a aerial attack to put an end to its tormenter. It descended rapidly on to the apparently helpless man. Its arms wrapped around Pentec and it bit down with all its fury hard onto the exposed mans neck.
To the gnolls dismay there was no sound of bones cracking and blood gushing forth, but instead its teeth found nothing but air. It stepped back just in time to see the real wizard only a foot away reach out with his hand and touch the bewildered gnolls chest. Before the beast could offer any sort of a response its body was covered in flames that burnt bright and hot over every inch of the creatures form. It stumbled back as the fires ate hungrily at his fur and skin. The gnoll gasped for air, but only found fires to inhale, and as it sucked in the magical fires its lungs instantly turned to liquid and it fell lifelessly to the ground, its pitiful form continuing to burn.
