  • Cryptic Remnants of Tifton Holyguard

Hano pushed through the library doors and swiftly makes his way inside. The storm outside was far more than unpleasant and he was not particularly enthusiastic about coming to the library in the first place. "However," he thought, "This must be done." Reassuring himself he continued his stride deeper into the library with an old but well kept book at his side. In the back of his mind he was hoping to find the Hin here, but knew that it was only wishful thinking. Actually, he would more than welcome a familiar face that might help him in hid endeavor.

His steel boots rang through the library with each step against the floor, disturbing the few scholars that were still awake and at studies. He already felt uneasy with the thoughts of coming here and the glares he received from the scholars stating their superiority weighed down his self confidence.

Not wanting to make any more of a disturbance than he already has he finds the nearest available desk and sets the book down on it. Sliding the chair back he plops down in it with a loud clank. He glances around a bit embarrassed by the noise, but it seems the scholars had already began ignoring him. Content with the current situation he eases the book open and begins to read.

Deep inside he knew what he was going to be met with, but even so, a great look of confusion falls on the Tormite's face staring at the cryptic text. He sighs realizing that this was near impossible for him, but.. He had to try. He pulled his journal from his bag and set it beside the book with his hand ready to record his thoughts and ideas on the matter.

He sat there a few minutes puzzled on where to even begin.. In fact he hadn't wrote a single thing before he was interrupted by the soft voice of a man approaching, "You know you have that upside down, right?" The robed figure motions toward the book. Hano's face grows red with embarrassment as he shuffles to rearrange the book properly.

The man smiles toward and speaks again, "Perhaps I can help.. I'm the Seer, Marcus." He moves beside Hano and lifts up the book and his journal with a smile. "Do yourself a favor. Find yourself a comfortable spot, change into some comfortable clothes, and relax. This doesn't have to be frustrating - We're here to help." With the books in the Seer's hands he turns away casually walking away, "Come with me." He leads hano to a nice private part of the library with comfortable chairs.. The change of atmosphere lifts Hano as he takes a seat to remove his armor.

"How can I help?" The Seer asks, setting the books down on the desk. Hano pauses for a moment trying to think of the best way to explain his situation. "Well.. To be honest I haven't even found a place to start. I'm given a book that is obviously encoded. That being the problem." The seer runs his hand acros the surface of the book speaking idly, "Well, encoded how?"

Slipping into his Paladin Shirt Hano replies, "From what I can guess it's short hand references that the author likely understood, but I would not... But that's only a guess." Marcus lets out a silent sigh shaking his head slightly, "Alright, let's take a step back. Put yourself into the mind of this person.. Why is it encoded? Why would they do this? What background taught them to do it, or where did they learn?" Hano begins to stroke his chin in thought. "Well.. My initial thoughts on the matter was that it was shorthand gibberish so he could quickly record his findings for equally quick references when need be. That doesn't seem like the case when I look at it harder."

The seer nods toward Hano as if he were getting somewhere. "It's possible that it's that, and something else. What can you tell me about this book?" Hano replies bluntly, "It's the remnants of Tifton Holyguard and his findings on weapon crafting. I've borrowed it from The Abbot Orlan Proskus." Marcus seems to lose interest in the subject but continues anyway, "Well like I said, put yourself in the mind of the author. I suspect you might understand them better than I could. If you were writing this book, why would you encode it?"

Hano's face grows serious now and seems to find a greater understanding of the book from the Seer's questions. "Well... If I had to encode anything, I would imagine it would be to keep my enemies from reading it should it fall in their hands... Or to be more vague - To control who the information could get to." The seer raises his brow in brief contemplation, "Very good point. I like that. So a the book that is potentially on weapon crafting, and you believe it's encoded to keep the information from falling into the wrong hands. I think you're getting somewhere."

Hano raises his hardened hand to his face to rub his forehead, "Though, we know that he wants to control the information within.. The reasons why or from who are in question. The obvious being to keep it from the hands of his enemies or those that would use it for greed." The seer shifts his position slightly, "Keep talking. Keep tossing out the ideas - Let the thoughts flow. There must have been some people this man trusted. Why keep the information from them... Or did he?"

Hano immediately pauses standing to his feet. "Y-You're right. That's it - There are two that I know he would trust with the information. The seer gestures for him to stop for a moment for a few last words. "They may have been the key to this and not even know it.. Then again, this Paladin might have taken the secret with him." He laughs lightly. "I heard a story once about a man carving the secrets to his fortune on the armor he was buried with."

Hano ponders on his words for a great while before responding. "Well... All scenarios are likely, but there's only one way to find out which ones will bear fruit. Process of elimination, I guess." The Seer hands Hano his books back, "Well, if there's anything else don't hesitate to ask." Hano accepts them with a warm and charming smile "I won't.. I'll likely see you again, friend, you've been a great help." With that Hano takes his leave with a few destinations in mind.

    ~ After many days ~
"The trick... The trick was all in his and his Brother's armor. Clever. If time and circumstances would have allowed it, I surely would have admired Tifton and could have learned a great deal from him. No use in dwelling in what could have been, though... I'll take this gift that he left behind and, I promise.. I'll make sure it is put to use. To honor the man you once were and protect the people you once did." Tapping his empty quill against his journal, obviously distracted by his thoughts instead of working he sighs. He turns to the corner of the room where rummaging could be heard; glass vials, paper, and all odd sorts of tools being yanked and scattered across the floor where the pale hin, Sol, was hard at work herself.

The Tormite scratches his head observing her... "Sloppy, but it seems like she does this quite often. Likely knows what she's doing... I hope. Praise be to Torm for her help regardless. Not even Qybox would let me drag him here in this Temple to help me decode it. Heh.. Peculiar hin, to say the least." He stretches himself and yawns after a long and hard time of not-working. "Well... Guess procrastinating won't help me much, Sol. Not many people are enticed by reading, studies, or any form of paper work. Can't thank you enough." He stands up and gathers his belongings. The books, quill, and ink, then steps over to Sol sitting beside her and laying out everything in front of him. "So... Where do we begin?"

She shuffles as he slinks down aside her, still digging through the various contents of her person splayed across the creaky floors. "I am not entirely sure... but the beginning does seem like a good start." She rolls up a few scrolls before setting them aside, "At least that seems to be a good choice."

Sitting up straight now, she eyes Hano intently, "I do not know much about the arcane or divine workings... but I do know quite a bit about puzzles." Clearing her throat gently, she reaches into her sleeve and slides out a rather slim pair of glasses which she slides up upon her nose. Smiling, she "hmmms" smugly, impersonating a knowledgeable professor.

"If it's a puzzle or a riddle, I can assuredly solve it with time." Looking up confidently at him, the glasses slide low down her nose. She pushes them up quickly before they fall, beaming red with a sudden blush, and turns back to her scattered inventory not wanting to make eye contact again.

"If I cannot do this, I can never learn to make golems," she thought to herself. "If I cannot do this, Hano may lose respect for me," carrying own with her thoughts. "If I cannot do this---" She stops herself suddenly mid-thought, recalling something special someone had told her.

"I will impress them," she says loudly without thinking. Suddenly, she realizes she had spoken aloud, swerving to catch the gaze of Hano and turning red with embarrassment as usual. "L-Let's take a look at it now... if you want to... that is... I-I don't mind."

She twiddles her thumbs before silently beginning to sort some of her tools.

Pushing his journal in front of Sol and smiling he points to the page where he recorded all of the runes from Tyton's armor. "Well... I guess it's like a puzzle. You see, runes and code here..." He turns away to grab the book he had received from the Abbot. Placing it before her. "Translates directly into this. This much I know."

He relaxes himself a bit and strokes his chin looking in a bit of curiosity to the Hin's unusual red eyes. "Oh.." He manages to break himself from the distraction and pulls out the book left behind by Tifton. "...We need to figure out what we can about the code... Ultimately our goal is to decode this book. My journal and the prayer book will simply let us find the pieces of the puzzle quicker. There might be a few blanks and untranslated words as well, however, you can likely figure out most of it on your own. I have faith in that."

With all the information and explanation given he sighs to himself, looking to the hin, waiting for her response.

His very words seemed to encourage her, smiling brightly now she looks up at him and down to the items in question. Holding her glasses steady she peers over the various writ, examining the various runes and glyphs, pawing through a few pages of this and that. She had seen things like this before, however her actual understanding of them was limited as they were usually mystic in nature.

"I've seen similar things when reciting incantations from scrolls, but I am not sure if I can actually make use of these..." She traces her fingers on a few semi-familiar looking markings, making mental notes and mapping what she can find. "Familiar... but looks and meanings are definitely different. It could very well be some sort of language code."

Turning a few more pages and making evaluations, she continues speaking passively. "I've successfully been able to activate text of both arcane and divine nature previously, but there are repercussions if it is done incorrectly..." She trails off, wetting her finger and flipping a few pages forward, back, looking for similarities in script.

"I'm sure you've seen what happens when I fail to cover an incantation perfectly." She looks up and makes a pop sound, emphasizing it with a motion of her hands as her glasses slide almost off the tip of her nose again. Catching herself, she slides them up again and turns her attention back down, smiling enthusiastically "... yes, there is a reason there are years and years study behind this sort of thing."

Upon hearing what she said, she wonders about what others had told her previously:

          "... destined for another path..."
"... master of the tower in no time..."
          "... a very smart girl..."

Smiling gently, she pauses a moment with her hand over a page. "Maybe this is what I am meant to do," she noted mentally.Looking up to Hano, she stares with a determination in her eyes that had not been there previously. "Don't worry, though. I will figure this out, because you have faith in me."
