  • Apples and Adventures

It began as a usual day for our duo; Karthus and Hano strolled down the streets of Sundren, discussing world events, politics, and religious perspective, when Karthus’ stomach began to grumble.

"Hungry?" Hano asked, motioning to the nearest fruit vendor.

    "Golly, I sure am!"

The two noble men, one Druid, one Paladin, began to make their way over to the vendor. Disregarding the fact that they had never seen her before, and that she didn’t seem to have many customers, Karthus approached the stand.

"What can I get ye’, boys?"

    "Just an apple, please."

As the strange vendor made her way over to a small crate, what would next transpire was foreshadowed by her evil grin as she removed the cover. The moment that Karthus and Hano approached, reaching there unsuspecting hands into the crate, it happened so suddenly: A flash of light, the sensation of falling, and a lapse in memory as though something terrible had happened. When the duo finally regained consciousness, they found themselves in an unrecognized setting, covered in some kind of thick, red substance. Whatever happened, it must have involved some form of wicked magic, a portal, and a deceptive fruit vendor. This was not Sundren; wherever they were, it was foreign.

"Karthus? What am I covered in? What in Faerun is this stuff?!"

Hano asked in shock, scraping a red, gory substance from the front of his armour with a hand, the same substance coating the area they had landed at. Karthus, however, was slightly more interested in his surroundings; a lush, tropical jungle. Several feet from them stood a number of stone monoliths, different animals in shape, but difficult to determine due to the thick foliage covering them.

    "We're not home."

The druid brought his hand to his chin in silent contemplation, as Hano struggled and grumbled against the portal residue. Several minutes passed, before Karthus made a silencing motion with his hand. From the bushes leap two brightly coloured men- one in red, and one in blue, and a woman in pink.

All of them landing in nonfunctional armour, wearing odd helmets with black visors, and striking poses. The red one spoke first.

"Halt! You tread upon the sacred forest of power, Evil-Doers!"

    Then the blue:

"You don't belong here, so leave now-"

    Then, the pink:

"Or prepare to be beaten by-"

    Finally, in unison:

"The Rangers of the forest of Power!"

Flinging a final glob of goo from his hand, Hano inclined his head, confused slightly. Rather than his usual finesse of 'Be smitten in the name of Torm!' he decided to let Karthus speak. The druid, annoyed at the over-zealous actions of the fellow defenders of nature, took a moment to respond.

"Look, we're not here to damage your forest, we're just lost and we need help getting home."

The Red-Clad Ranger of Power stepped forward, swinging his arms and striking a different monk-like pose. His mouth was not visible under the odd helm, but he moved his head often as he spoke, apparently for some kind of exaggerated emphasis.

"Lies! You're the monsters sent here by our Arch-Nemesis, Zorgleda!"

Then, as if on some cue, the blue ranger stood forward, in an identical fashion, looking at Karthus.

"We're gonna send you back to where you came from, Greenshoes!"

As soon as he had finished, the pink ranger moved in as well, instead focussing slightly more on Hano.

"There's no way around it, ugly!"

Hano sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. Karthus, on the other hand, apparently struggled to resist the urge to return with a counter-threat of equal intelligence.

"We don't have time for this, I'm going to look around, you can handle these three right Hano?"

"I’ll manage. Just get us out of here... Wherever here is."

With that, the Rangers of Power flung themselves towards Hano without giving pause to his attempts at reasoning, forcing him to take three swings of his mighty great sword at the well-choreographed, colourful team. With those three swings, all three Rangers of Power were knocked back, barely regaining their composure through means of excessive acrobatic manoeuvres.

    "How can we fight that!?"
    "He's too strong!"
"We can do it rangers, we just have to work together!"

The three drew their dual short swords, charging the Paladin. Caught slightly unaware, he was quickly playing defence against a circling triangle of brightly-clad rangers. With the red-ranger finally landing a blow on Hano's back, he was sent flying forward, his armour sparking slightly.

"Oh, that's it, you power-pathetics! Face the wrath of the Loyal Fury!"

Hano, as if instinctively, gripped his sword tightly and raised it overhead, then flung it to the ground in front of the rangers. From it, a divine blast arose, growing several times in size before letting out a gigantic shockwave. The rangers, unable to vacate quick enough, were thrown in several directions.

    "We can't beat him!"
"It's time to bring out our secret weapon!"
    "Swards! Activate!"

The rangers each threw their swords into a slot on the nearby stone monoliths, and with a running jump, each was securely within a chamber of the stone monolith. Only then did Hano realize...

"Those aren't statues, those are golems! Karthus, I'm going to need help!"

He ran back, as the Swards were brought to life. The rangers, though not visible to those on the ground struck their poses, shouting their respective phrases.

    "Red-Rex, activate!"

    "Pink-Panther, Activate!"

    "Blue-Badger, Activate!"

The trio of golems activated, their eyes aglow with their respective ranger's power. They charged from the foliage, only to be met by a fully prepared earth-elemental; none other than Karthus. Caught off-guard, the badger-golem lost its balance, collapsing onto the ground near to the elemental. Not about to let fate go to waste, Karthus grabbed and flung the animal-shaped golem a good 30 feet into the air.

Another sigh came from the druid, as the Dinosaur-golem charged; its movements as clumsy as a man in some sort of foam costume and Karthus’ as smooth as an... earth elemental's. With what was apparently the superior nimbleness, Karthus dodged to the left and grabbed the golem’s tail. Though slightly smaller than the golem, he easily mustered the strength to swing it around. The Lizard landed atop it's fallen comrades, quickly stopping their attempts to rise. The earth elemental simply stood and watched, not particularly interested in smashing some young idiots with good intent.

However, the druid's mercy would go unnoticed. In defiance of gravity, the three golems leap to the sky, twisting their forms and connecting as they landed. Forming a huge, humanoid construct, eyes burning pure white and it's form bulky and squared with all of the individual parts connecting and interlocking beyond the scope of any reasonable laws of physics.

    "Mega-Sward, Ready for action!"

The Rangers of Power called out, and in the usual Ranger-Esque fashion, the golem posed over the tiny Earth Elemental. As if this was not enough, from the sky descended a sword made of the same material of the golem - where it came from was absolutely unapparent, though with a catch and a follow-up glorious pose, it stood ready.

Oh no! Will this be the end of our Duo? Will the Mega-Sward crush Karthus and Hano? Are the Rangers of Power unstoppable? Tune in next time, to find out!

Hano grit his teeth staring at the large golems with their equally proportionate blade. He grimaced at the thought of him and Karthus' impending doom. They were now charging toward them and they had no hope of defending themselves against such massive constructs.

Just then - A staff falls from the sky piercing the ground between Hano and the golems followed by a wicked cackle. It was a small female gnome draped in black robes and matching head dress. Cackling to the skies she cried, "I am Reetuh! Make my monste - I mean adventurers, grow!"

With this the sorcerer motioned her hands, wiggling her fingers across the sky. A large red bolt roared through the skies striking the staff. Traces of the now dispersed bolt make their way to Karthus and Hano enlarging them to equal the size of the Golems. The Heroes did not seem to be as confused as they should have been, looking to each other and nodding sharply.

Preparing for battle, Hano, lifted his sword to Karthus who was conjuring up a powerful spell. As he was conjuring, a hin dropped from a tree off to the side of the battlefield weilding an abnormally large mandolin, strumming away at it with fierce hin fury. The Mandolin was amplified by unknown magics as the hin screamed his praises, "Go! Go! Rangers of Power!"

The field had been set and epic battle was soon to take place... Will the aid of the sorcerer and the cries of Sundren be enough for the Heroes to stop these wicked Golem Constructs? Or will the Golems simply crush them with their vivid might? Where did the hin come from, anyway? And what the hell is up with his song? Find out on the next chapter of this great adventure!
