* Balthasar, following yesterday's events, addresses a large crowd gathering outside the Temple of the Triumvirate. He appears very tired, though speaks calmly and resolutely. Caspar stands by his side in full support of his Triumvirate brother. *
Ladies and Gentlemen, my fellow good and kind citizens of Sundren, thank you for your interest in the matter of the uncovered artifact. I have come before you today to answer your questions about this item, and to tell you all that we know. I would ask that you hold your questions until I'm done speaking.
* Balthasar looks over the crowd, pausing to give Hano a short nod, before continuing *
Three weeks ago, a merchant traveling outside of Sundren came to possess an item. He brought this item home, to Sundren, where it sat in his store for several days. The merchant's wife was alarmed to realize that her husband became enthralled by the device, and would not leave it. Over a period of 72 more hours, the merchant aged approximately 50 years. I am sad to say he developed forgetfulness and perished just days later.
Fortunately, the merchant left a journal that detailed the rapid changes that took place within him; he believed that he was being punished by the Loyal Fury, Torm, for cheating another merchant during his travels. Let me assure you our Lord does not punish in such ways. It was the merchant's dying will, noted in writing, that the artifact be given to the Temple.
Two weeks ago, I requested a number of experts from throughout Sundren, including the Hands of Mundus, Church of Helm, the Thayan Enclave, and the Sundren Legion to help the Triumvirate investigate this device. After what it had done to the merchant, and some chaotic feedback during initial tests, we felt it important to keep it away from the general public.
These experts have concluded that this device, a head-sized, heavy, metallic cube, is very old. Tests have shown that it has the ability to absorb or negate energies of all kind, including arcane, life, and ... * he pauses * divine. A few, namely those with inherent magical abilities, have gotten sick in its proximity, but it is not a risk to the general population and only affects those very close to it. I am told that magic canceling items are very rare, but not necessarily unheard of.
At this time, we have not positively identified its purpose, or place of origin. However, I am confident that our leading scholars will make progress and provide us with answers soon.
I will confirm that we have received offers to buy the artifact, but the Triumvirate is not, and will not be, interested in selling it. Thank you for your interest, but we will not entertain any offers.
Let me be clear: This is no doomsday device. As it is now no longer in the city, there is even less reason for you to be concerned. I will brief you again when we learn something of significant note. Rest assured Sundren's best and brightest are working to identify the artifact.
I will take your questions now.
* Balthasar concludes his speech and looks to the crowd *
