  • Little Lauan

Lauan sat on the floor of the kitchen, playing with her dolls. Her mother was baking bread in the oven while her father was at work.
"Mommy, when is daddy coming home?"
Lauan questioned her mother. Lauan's mother looked at her with her brown eyes and white smile and said.
"Daddy will be coming home soon,he had to stay late to make more money."
Teresa, Lauans mother, went back to kneeding the dough for another loaf of bread.
"Mommy, can I go play outside?
Teresa looked at Lauan and nodded. After a hug from her mother, Lauan ran to the door, only to have it opened for her by her father.Lauans father, Sherman, was a tall dark skinned man with dark hair, resembling Lauan's more than her mothers blonde hair.
    "Daddy! you're home!"
Lauan ran over to her father and embraced him. Sherman chuckled and called to his wife that he was home. Teresa came out with a tray of baked bread and gave Sherman a worried look.
"why did he keep you long? why were you so late?"
Sherman looked down to Lauan, gave her a sweet roll, and nodded for her to go out the door and play. Lauan hurried out the door, knowing of the fight to be had between her parents. She ran out the door as shouts could be heard coming from her house.Lauan began to weep at the sound of screaming and ran into the neghbors garden, playing with her dolls.
"Why do mommy and daddy fight?" Talking to a flower.
"Daddy always comes home later and not want play 'cause mommy needs to talk to him about Important stuff. . ." She sniffles and starts to stop crying.
"Maybe Mommy and daddy will stop yelling if they look at you! 'cause your so pretty!" lauan hurridly picked the bright blue flowere from the ground and hastily ran home to put her perfect plan into action.
"Mommy!! Daddy!!" she called as she burst into the house.
"I picked a flower for you!"
    The house was silent.
    "Mommy?. . . .Daddy. . . .?"
Still no reply. She ran into the kitchen.
    "Mommy! Daddy! I picked a-"
Her words were cut off by the sight to behold, she dropped the flower and fell to her knees.
    "Mommy?. . . .Daddy?. . ."
She was staring into the white, pale dead faces of her parents.

"Any new arrivals Mister Jacoby?" Krang offered the usual pleasantries to show at least a feigned interest in the man's work. Jacoby was hosting a viewing at the local orphanage, though anyone within the right circles knew the place to be a training ground for warriors, theives and assassins. Ocassionally even a mage would show promise. Many deluded couples showed a genuine loving interest in the children, charming really though incredibly foolish for these children held such remarkable value.

The price was often great for those that proved exceptional by their teenage years, but Krang had a sense for such things long before most others. Of course, it helped that he knew something about the girl's parents. Her father had been a master swordsman in his younger days, but had given up that life for his family. The mother was a beautiful woman, simple but kind. Sherman had begun to stick his nose in matters that didn't concern him and he was eliminated. Always keeping informed, Krang caught wind of the impending assasination and paid a pretty penny to assure the girl would live.

"I'll take that one." Krang spoke casually to Jacoby, "she will do my cleaning." Of course Krang knew she would be so much more than this, but he was careful not to let on. "Really master Krang? Surely you wouldn't take an interest in one of these fine lads?" Krang shook his head, "I will offer twice the common stag toward the 'foundation', 200 Stag for the child and no more." The business completed, he walked up to the young girl staring blankly at a tiny figurine of a dancer. "Your coming with me girl."

          "Line up!"
The foreign voice commanded. all the children scrambled to make a line in front of a mat on the ground. This was Lauan's first day in "School". She was quiet, reserved, and didn't speak to anyone.Lauan looked at the floor, making eye contact with no one.She could hear the foot steps of the man walking up and down the line of children, examining each one of them.
          "Hmm. . .you. . .and. . ."
The man held his hand in his chin, laying his gaze upon Lauan, who looked to be the most pathetic in the group, with her slender frame. The trainer let out a wicked smile of amusement.
          "you. . ."
He pointed to Lauan, but she did not move. She was too afraid to move, all of this was so foriegn to her, so far away from the warmth of a home and loving parents. The man snorted.
" Girl! out on the mat! Now!"
The trainer grabbed Lauans arm and flung her unto the mat, while the second child who was selected, a boy who looked no younger than twelve, was selected to be her sparring partner. Lauan stood there, helpless.
          "Ready? Go."
Lauan looked around rapidly as the other children began to cheer on the other boy.Her sparring partner ran at Lauan with great speed, who held her hands up in a pathetic defense. His punch broke through, and landed on her right cheek, the boy then proceeded to give her three more blows on the face, as well as one on the rib, before the trainer screamed.
" Enough! we need all of you in good shape. You, little girl"
Lauan layed on the ground, broken and crying.
"You will need more training, please children on your way out, don't feel afraid to give our new student some words of encouragement."
With a wicked smile, the man left, and on their way out the children called Lauan horrible names and would sometimes kick her. This was Lauan's first day of school.

The days, weeks, months, years passed by, like seconds the days flew by without remorse or compassion. All she knew was pain, all she knew was despair. She did not understand what was happening to her, why she was here, she was too young to know, just turning into a woman, but was not treated human. This was her life, punishment, beatings, rape, and grueling training, day after day she was pushed to her limits and beyond, her small figure of a dancer disappearing into that of a warrior. now at the age of 20.

She remembers the first day she had spilled blood, that day was burned into her memory like a branned. She brought her knees to her chest as they locked her in her bedroom, as she recalled that day....

The night before the fight, she could here her trainer whispering about getting rid of her, how she was useless, just a worthless slave. They said they would deal with her if she did not show progress, Lauan knew what this meant, but she did not like it. She curled up on her mat, with tears in her eyes, wishing that her mother was with her, or her father to protect her. She is only 10 years old.

The next day, they dragged her out of her room, and threw her in line with the other children, some she knew, but they were not here to make friends. She was shaking, full of fear, knowing that they knew she was the weakest. She looked to her feet, hearing the familiar foot steps in front of her as the wizard walked by. The foot steps stopped at their loudest, right in front of her. She dare not look the man in the eye.

A cold voice shouted. "Out on the mat, girl!" The man then struck her in the back with his staff, forcing her onto the mat. She stood there, alone, waiting to see who her sparring partner would be. The wizard looked to another boy, strongly built, obviously Lauan was no match for him. "Out on the mat, hurry." He pushed the boy onto the mat, who unlike Lauan, had a murderous look in his eyes, covered in scars, a shaved head, looking of Mulhondi decent. He smiled as he stepped closer to Lauan as the other children jeered for the beating to come.

Lauan stood there, like all the other times, afraid, dumb struck, not sure what to do. The other children shouted words such as "Retard!", "Stupid, moron, idiot." Followed by various curses. Her eyes welled with tears as the wizard laughed at her, in her pathetic state. She looked down as the boy drew closer, his fist reeled back, ready to punch, but something with Lauan cried out, something angry, something full of deep, blackened hatred.

She looked up at the boy, her fear gone, her imposing mean glare fixed with his eyes. The boy laughed, as did the other children, as he delivered the first blow, but to his surprise, she had dodged it, and disappeared, he looked around fearfully, when a horrible pain was felt in his back. The boy collapsed to the ground with a whining cry. He was just as innocent as Lauan, scared, alone, the same look in his eyes as hers was before.

Lauan pounced on the boy with a roar that could shake the foundation of the building, while delivering a bone shattering puch to his face. "No, Stop!" The boy pleaded with Lauan as her legs were wrapped around his wast, one hand around his throat, the other moving up and down in a blur, with spurts of blood following behind. "Help!" The boy began to cry, his face covered in blood. "Hel-" His words were cut off as Lauan gave one final punch to his nose, with a sickening crunch, he lay still.

As if that sound had been the words of a magic spell, Lauan came out of her trance and looked at the child who lay dead and bloodied before her, looknig to her bloody hands, then to the crowd, who looked on fearfully of Lauan, in dead silence. The trainers hurried the body out, as they dragged Lauan off as the children boo'd her and called her hurtful names, but not quite the same. "Murderer!" "Killer!" The trainers dragged her into a room with a bald wizard behind a desk, and the only words she heard muttered was. "She's ready."

Her memory was cut off as the lights instantly shut off, she felt she could cry, but had no more tears to do so. She flopped over in her bed, wishing it would all end.

By the time she was 27, she could no longer feel the back of the trainers hand when they struck her. For 20 years, she was locked away, her fate sealed to become a killer, a murderer, a servant of Thay. Her child hood stolen away from her, she took solace in the only thing she had, which was the pain and dicipline. Like a mother's praise, when they hit her, ordered her around, told her she was nothing, she would nod, knowing this was true, that she was nothing more than a slave, and could not be happy, it was wrong to be happy.

Krang Mortenson watched her turn from a innocent little girl, into a finely tuned machine, which he had plans for. Krang had checked up on Lauan for the past weeks, he probably smiled with glee at the thought of his new puppet. He probably slipped in quietly, during one of Lauan's training sessions. He watched, as three grown men surrounded her, the instructors looked on the situation with interest and evil pride. The men nodded to one another, as Lauan stood in the middle of the mat, her eyes on the floor, shuffling her feet and humming slightly. A sudden cry let out as the men charged, Lauan looked up, quite annoyed at being bothered from her day dream, remembering where she was. She grabbed one of the men as he came foward with a fist that landed in Lauan's chest, but did not so much as make her flinch. With this, she turned around quickly, the man still in her grasp, sheilding herself from the other two men with the one in her hands. They punched him, instead of her, and he slipped out of conciousness. She lunged foward with a brutal punch to the mans ribs, she felt a crack, and smiled with inncoence as she was winning the "Game." The last man punched Lauan across the face, making her head spin around, but she grabbed his next punch and looked at him angrily. She let out a terrible roar, grabbing the man, lifting him up, and ran toward a window with him, she tossed him through the window with the sound of shattering glass followed by a loud thud.

It was quiet. She looked around, shrugged, and returned to the mat as the instructors applauded and aproached Lauan. He kicked the mans body who was punched in the side, noticing a bulge where she had hit, he did not breath. He shrugged."Very good, girl." The one who spoke was Zakiri Volari, her temporary care taker. Lauan smiled with pride and replied quietly, with respect. "Thank you." He smiled and wiped some of the blood from Lauan's nose from when she was punched. Zakiri placed a copper piece in Lauan's hand, then aproached Krang. Lauan wandered off with the coin, reutrning to the mat to spar with a longsword. Krang and Zakiri spoke business, as Lauan quickly outmatched her opponent.
