~ A New Life ~
Slipping stealthily off the boat, she glanced around the harbor town - yes, it would do as well as any. At a sound from the deck above, she crouched in the deeper shadow of the gangplank until whoever it was had walked by. It would never do to have them spot her now, after she had managed to stay hidden for all of the journey. When things were quiet again, she stood, and breathed deeply.
The night air was crisp, the salty smell strong in the air. Only an occasional straggler could be seen heading to or from a tavern. In the distance, a cat yowled loudly, the sound turning into an indignant screech that cut off abruptly.
Glancing back to the sea once, past the ship rocking gently against its moorings, she adjusted her headband, tugged on her worn clothing and headed ... forward. Perhaps here she would find what had eluded her all these years. Perhaps here, she would escape what kept gnawing at her.
The past was the past. She had to remember that, and move on.
Ducking out of sight between two barren market stalls, she set about exploring.
