    Farewell mother

Somewhere in the Docks District in Neverwinter, night falls upon the city, giving the sky the light of the stars.
A group of guards knocks twice on a door at a house with good appearance. The chimney is releasing smoke, and it smells like dinner.

    - Lane, would you answer the door please? I can’t leave dinner at this moment. – said a woman dressed in common clothes.

    - Of course mother. – A man with dark brown eyes and dark hair, about 25 years old, marks the page of the book he was reading to get the door.

Once the door is opened, a man wearing the city watch chainmail speaks.

    - Captain Majer, good night sir…

    - Good night Sergeant Howkee – says Lane with a surprised face. – Join us for dinner?

    - Oh, no sir, really thanks, but, I just came here because the General wants to speak to you. – Sergeant Howkee smiles happily at the invitation from the Captain – Besides, sir, I can’t leave my men at this time, we have to patrol the streets until the morning arrival.

    - I see, thanks then Sergeant, I will be on my way.

Sergeant Howkee then gives a nod and a smile to his Captain and leaves with the men. Lane once dressed properly, follows to the City Watch Post thinking about what General needs to speak to him in his day off.

The two guards at the entrance salute Lane as he walks inside the building and salutes them back. Lane follows through the corner and turns left around another corner, and he knocks on a door.

    - Come in – A voice from inside can be heard.

    - Sir? – Lane salutes the General – Do you wish to speak to me?

    - Indeed Captain Majer – the General salutes the Captain – We need you in a mission Captain. Here is your task, it could take a day or even years; it’s uncertain how long it will take, but, we can count only on you to do this… I hope you understand. – The General hands some notes to Lane.

Lane raises an eyebrow as he reads the notes, then after a few moments he speaks.

    - I understand, sir…

    - There is no one with your skills that we can trust…

    - It’s ok sir, I understand – He says again with a slightly smile.

    - Very well – The General says calmly – Take about 20 men, you will leave tomorrow morning.

    - Yes sir.

    =====================================

Back home, after Lane’s packing is done, he calls for his mother.

    - Yes dear? – The woman has the same eyes and hair color as her son.

    - I’m sorry mother, I have a mission to do and I will have to leave tomorrow, I will write to you every week, ok?

    - Oh dear – his mother says sadly – where are you going?

    - Some place called Sundren…

    Looking to the past

The Neverwinter streets were quiet that night, there were few people passing by, some of them were just workers going home after a long day of work, others were on their way to some tavern to get drunk and have some fun. Lane, from his post, was watching everything as his men were playing cards.

    - Come on boys, you already had your chance, if Lieutenant Farmir show up I'll get my ass in trouble - says Majer.

    - We got it, Sergeant - says one of the city watch soldiers - besides, I am tired of winning already.

    - Awww, come on, I won 4 in a row, the truth is that you can't accept that you got your ass kicked by a girl - says a girl about 19 years old, long dark hair, wearing a heavy armor and a large big axe by her side.

    - heh, true enough, Valler - says Majer, the rest of the men fell into laughter - but we have to agree you lost 8 in a row, Elly.

    - It's Corporal Ellenhill for you, Sergeant - says Elly in a playful tone of voice.

Suddenly, Lane raises his closed fist, all men stop and keep quiet. A call for help can be heard from a certain distance. Elly let's out a sigh and wears her big axe, the rest of the men do the same with their weapons, Majer gives the order and they all go after him.

Getting on the scene, a band of criminals keeping a woman as hostage trying to escape through the streets, but the city watch soldiers keep them surrounded, still, they don't get close enough fearing for the woman's life, a city watch one lies lifeless on the ground. Majer then speaks with their men with a low voice, once they have not been spotted yet.

    - Great. Here's the deal, I'll do the talk, Elly stay on me and wait for the action. Valler, you will take the blond one down with your bow, Tillion and Shorn, walk around that house and try to surprise them.

The men nod to Lane and the plan go on. Lane approaches close to the rest of the city watch soldiers, all men get under his command once he is one with highest rank. One of the bandits then talk.

    - Don't get closer or I'll cut her head off, pig!

    - It's ok sir, stay calm, I just want to talk - Lane puts both of her short blades down on the ground - See? I'm unarmed.

Elly gets tense, behind Lane, she holds his axe tight.

    - Tell your men to get away, now!!

    - Sure, I'll do that, I just want to ask you, is it about the gold? Look, I'm a Sergeant, I'm much more worth to you than this woman, what if we trade, you release the woman and I'll be your hostage.

The bandits get taunted as Lane speaks and an arrow passes in less than a second by Lane's left side to hit one of the bandits in the eye, and, before this one fall lifeless on the ground, Tillion and Shorn step out the shadows and grab two of the bandits by their necks, taking their life away. Elly with an incredible precision, chops off the head of the one who was holding the woman. Then, Lane, not so strong but really fast, ducks and arms himself with his blades, and, in a fast jump he engages two of the bandits, counting only with his Dexterity putting the strength aside. Few seconds and the two bandits fall, one dead, other in critical conditions. Everything goes too fast, so fast that the two left bandits let their swords fall on the ground.

    - All right, all right!! Don't kill us, we surrender!!

    - Too late bastards, now you will gonna pay - says one of the city watch soldiers.

    - Hold!! There is no need to take their life if they gave up! Get them arrested, soldier, that's an order. - says Lane.

    - Yes, sir!

    =====================================

Back on his post, Lane leans against the wall and remains in silence. Elly steps forward and speaks.

    - Sir, how do you do that, how do you think so fast in those strategies? Gods, you are only 19 and you are already a Sergeant. Where did you learn all that stuff? You have saved all victims of assault since I know you, come on, teach us.

    - Yes, sir, teach us!! - all men say.

    - Yes, and what about your fighting style? You don't use your strength, how do you hit like that? - says Valler.

    - Well... I have started my training since I was 6, my mother always said, "if your arms are not strong enough, make them fast enough". I had her training until I made 11, after that she sent me to the academy to receive military training. I guess I did my home work. - he pauses and smiles - About the strategies, my inspiration comes from the Red Knight. - he finishes and scans the streets.

    - Fair enough... - says Elly.

      Well done, Captain

      - Sergeant Majer, the General is satisfied with your efforts, he sent me to tell you that your presence is requested at this moment in his room. – the man salutes Lane.

      - Yes, Lieutenant, I’ll be on my way, sir – says Lane, nods and salutes back.

Lane follows to the City Watch in Neverwinter, the dawn seems to be speaking to the sun telling it that it’s time to raise like if it was the god of the sky. Some knocks on a door and Lane hears the General’s voice saying that he should come in. He does so.

      - Sir? – Lane salutes – I heard you wanted to speak to me, sir.

      - Yes, Sergeant – the General salutes back – There is a task which must be done tonight, and you have proven useful and loyal, so I will put it on your hands. Our fonts have told us that those damn thieves will meet here – he points something on the map, a place outside the gates of Neverwinter – and their leader will be there, bring him to the law, or take him down, do as you wish.

      - Yes, sir. I’ll tell the men…

      - No Sergeant, it’s only you and Valler.

      - Yes, sir… - he says not very convinced.

Back to his post, Lane glances to all his men and sighs.

      - What’s wrong, Sergeant? – Elly says as she wipes out her hair form her eyes.

      - Elly, you will be in charge this night, I’ll tell you later. – he pauses and scans all the men – Valler, come here.

      =====================================

      - So, the General said that… Is he trying to kill us? – Valler says playfully

      - Seems so… - Lane grins – but I think we can do it.

      - You think? That’s just great, thanks for all you have done for me Sergeant, was good to have met you – Valler chuckles.

      - Heh, come on, soldier, I’m sure you will make my day. Look, Jem will come through this trail, it’s typical of him, he will probably be with 4 or 5 men, you can place a trap there and I’m sure you can take two of them down before I engage the others. But here is the thing, I’ll taunt them until they fall on the trap, at least one of them will, so I’ll have to engage only 2 or 3 counting with Jem.

      - Yes, Sergeant, but he is not that easy to defeat, you have seen him fighting before.

      - I know, that’s why I’ll count with your bow.

      - Are you crazy? I can shoot you, dammit!

      - Heh, take it easy, if things go wrong just run and say they got me.

      - If I had a higher rank than you, I would slap you on your face. If you die today, you won’t die alone. Is there something else that I should know?

      - Yes… - Lane pauses like if he doesn’t want to talk about the subject, but seeing that there is no way out he proceeds – They got Milly as hostage, that’s why General sent only you and I.

      - Elly’s sister?

Lane nods once and remains in silence.

      - Fucking great, Sergeant, that’s just fucking great – Valler says more serious.

Valler begins to prepare the trap as Lane searches for a good spot for an archer, then Valler places the trap in a cleaned area without trees or rocks. Lane awaits for Jem arrivle.

Jem walks through the trail as expected, 4 men surrounding him, one of them holding a woman about 30 years, long dark hair, signs of scars and mistreatment. Lane shows up on the way, his blades on his hands, all men draw their weapons, so the taunting begins.

      - Well, well, if isn’t the coward Jem. – says Lane like not fearing anything, but the truth is that he is fearing the worst.

Jem’s men get ready to charge but they get stopped by him.

      - I don’t think you would show up on your own to face 5 men, besides, there are much more coming by. – Jem spits on the ground.

      - Really? Why not? That only shows that I’m not a coward like you. – Lane keeps taunting them.

Milly gets scared and tears can be seen falling from her eyes.

      - Yeah, right, you couldn’t even face only one of my men – So Jem begins to get taunted. Foolish mistake.

      - You always talk and never show action, if you say so, why don’t you send one of your men to face my blades? Or do you want me to take all their lives at once?

      - Enough! – Jem gets taunted – Show him what you are made of, Lin!

Valler, well hided on top of a tree, feels like waiting the duel, knowing for sure that Lane will win this one.

Lin wears a short blade like Lane and on the other hand he has a dagger, he walks slowly to Lane’s direction as Lane just watches. The fight begins, Lin suddenly attacks fast, still, not enough to surprise Lane. Lin attacks once more, again, Lane dodges off and with one hit, Lane’s blade passes through Lin’s neck really fast and Lin feeling like losing his life, falls on the ground.

Get him!! – Jem gets pretty angry.

Lane backs off counting his steps, 2 of Jem’s men charge against Lane, the last one keeps holding Milly.

Jem draws two daggers but remains on his spot.

One of the men who were going after Lane, suddenly falls on a sonic trap and gets dazed. In same time, an arrow flies out from a tree’s leafs to hit the other one in the middle of his heart.

With no difficulty, Lane’s blades sings through the air to drain the life of the trapped one throwing it away. Lane glances at Jem.

      - Seems you are running off your cards – Lane gives Jem a provocative smile.

      - Haven’t you forgotten something, Sergeant? – Says Jem in a sarcastic tone of voice and motions Milly – My men will be here soon enough, you better not move until I let you, otherwise--

Before Jem finishes to speak, an arrow flies out off a tree again, this time to hit the man who was holding Milly on his neck. The man falls on his kneels and a second after he falls on the ground with his open but lifeless eyes.

      - Otherwise what? – Lane shakes his head hopeless – Do you know what’s the difference between you and me? You are so full of yourself that you let your men fight alone, you were so full of yourself thinking that you already had the situation under your control that you have not even realized that one of your men have died by an arrow. You were foolish and coward, now you are on your own, and I doubt your men will arrive soon enough as you just said. But I tell you that, you can choose to drop your weapons and come with me, or you can choose that this day will be the last day of your days.

Jem, very angry to speak, charges against Lane, forgetting once again about the arrows, and a hard fight begins.

Valler tries to get a clean shot, but fearing for Lane’s safety, he prefers to wait a better chance.

Lane don’t go well in this combat, and was not for his armor, he would be in trouble already. Jem’s movements go faster and with an amazing precision, but, his light armor was not strong enough. One of Valler’s arrow penetrates Jem’s left arm, and then, he lets one of his dagger fall. Lane backs off a bit.

      - Last chance Jem, give it up, you won’t win this one, I don’t want to kill you, even knowing you deserve it! – Lane says pointing his sword to his enemy.

      - Bullshit, don’t play the good guy with me, bastard!

Jem goes for attack, even with his left arm unable to hit, he fights well and fast, Lane still have difficult to dodge away from Jem’s deadly dagger. Jem performs an amazing movement which Lane had to fall on the ground to avoid his death.

      - What did you say again? – Jem says raising his dagger to finish Lane – I guess we have a winner here.

It would be Lane’s last day, if wasn’t for another arrow from Valler to hit Jem on his right shoulder. Jem lets his last dagger fall on the ground as Lane without wasting the chance, from the ground, hits Jem’s so hard almost cutting off his legs.

Jem falls, alive, but not able to proceed with the battle and bleeding too much. Valler approaches and ties him up. Lane steps forward to Milly.

      - It’s ok now Milly, you are safe now, lets take you back and take care of your wounds.

      - Thank you Lane – Milly passes an arm over Lane’s shoulder to use him as support.

Jem screams heavy bad words to them, Valler punches him on his face making him unconscious and smiling to Lane, Lane smiles back.

      =====================================

Back inside the General’s office in Neverwinter, Lane and Valler stands in military posture as the General steps inside the room.

      - Sir! – Lane and Valler salute him.

      - Sergeant, soldier – the General salutes them back – I am impressed, you have proven great soldiers, both of you are heroes. – he pauses for a moment staring at Lane – I knew you would handle this situation from the beginning, but I was not expecting to see you entering through the Neverwinter’s gates with the bastard alive, you are to be commanded, and I was planning to promote you making you a Lieutenant, but it would be a waste of potential. Now you will be part of the special forces of Neverwinter. Well done, Captain.

Lane tries to hold a smile but it doesn’t work at all.

      - Sir – he glances aside to Valler – If wasn’t for this soldier here, we would never be able to rescue Milly and bring Jem arrested.

      - Well, Captain – the General glances between them – then if I were you, I would rank this soldier as your Corporal, once that you are a Captain now – the General smiles and takes an informal posture, pats Lane on his back and leaves the room.

      - Well done, Captain Majer – Valler smiles and salutes Lane.

      - Well done, Corporal Brinst – Lane smiles and salutes back.

Captain, time for you to choose your best men

Captain Majer was staring at a picture of a girl, the picture was hanging on the wall, many pictures of the members of his family were hanging on the wall as well.

        - Andy… - Captain Majer says in a low voice as his tears falls from his eyes.

Lane’s mother, suddenly, steps inside the room.

        - Oh, sorry son, I didn’t know you were here – Marees Majer glances at her son for a moment as she realizes what’s going on.

        - It’s ok, mother - Lane wipes his tears with the backs of his hands – I still can’t believe she did those crimes – he glances once again to the picture on the wall – How could she become a murder? My little Andy… my little sister…

Marees lets out a sigh but remains in silence as Lane gives his mother a goodbye kiss and leaves the room. Marees starts to cry as she glances at her daughter’s picture on the wall.

        =====================================

In Neverwinter City Watch Post, Captain Majer stands in front of his General. The light invades the office through the window. The General glances through the window and then he turns his look to the Captain.

        - Captain, take a sit – The General takes his sit on his chair.

        - Yes, sir. - Lane sits on the chair in front of General’s desk.

        - Now you are in the special forces, you won’t be leading too many men, do you know why, Captain?

        - Yes, sir. The special forces has the finest men of Neverwinter, the elite ones, so there is no need in leading too many men once the special forces are designated to special tasks, most of times, missions that shouldn’t attract much attention.

        - Correct Captain, the elite men only lose for the Nine, that means you have an extremely high rank, so you will have to act with great responsibility from now on. But that doesn’t mean you will not lead the common soldiers anymore, if there is no mission going on, you will keep working as usual.

        - Yes, sir. I understand.

        - But there is one thing you will have to do today. You must rank your men as you wish, but only the high ones, no less than corporals. These men will receive special training for one year. You would receive this special training as well, but you don’t need it, you are already prepared for your rank. If we become to have a war, the men from the special forces are the ones who command the army according to the orders from the Nine – when it seems the General have finished, he starts to speak again – Oh, one more thing Captain. If you become to find your sister, I’ll do my best to avoid an execution, but she must be arrested.

        - Understood, sir.

        =====================================

Captain Majer walks through the streets of Neverwinter, he keeps quiet saluting back those from the City Watch who salute him when they cross their ways.

Back to his post, Captain Majer stares at his men.

        - Captain!! – The men salute.

        - Men. – Lane salutes them back, stares at them in silence for a moment – Elly, Valler, Zig, Shorn and Tillion, come with me.

They follow back to the City Watch Post, Captain Majer makes sign for them to get inside a room which was designated to him. They get inside and Lane closes the door.

        - Nice room Captain – says Elly glancing around amazed.

        - Heh, yes, nice room – Lane smiles – But I took you all here because as a Captain, I have to rank my men properly. I will tell you what I have been told by the General when Valler and I came back from Milly’s rescue mission. You have proven great soldiers, you all are to be commanded, besides, you are my best men, so, congratulations Elly Ellenhill, you are my new Lieutenant.

        - By Torm! Thank you Captain – Elly smiles with her glowing eyes filled with passion, like not believing what the Captain just did say.

        - Well done Zig, you are now known as Sergeant Zig Howkee – says Lane smiling.

        - Oh my… Thank you Captain – Zig smiles and nods.

        - Corporals Valler Brinst, Tillion Yukins and Shorn Rureys, well done

        - Thank you Captain! – Tillion smiles.

        - Aye! Thanks Captain! – Shorn smiles

        - Bah, I already knew that! – Valler says playfully

And after that, the room was filled with songs of laughs…

          The Neverwinter Relic

Neverwinter was quit that day, the rain seemed to be punishing the streets as people were running seeking for a shelter against the strong rain.

Half year has passed since Lane was ranked a captain. He was in his post working as usual as his best men were receiving the special training, except Valler who finished his training in this half year thanks for his great skills.

The Lieutenant Ellenhill left the City Watch and also Neverwinter after a family fight. Last time she was seen was in a ship which was leaving Neverwinter to where nobody knows.

Andy Majer, Captain Majer’s sister, was accused of crimes and a murder which has been proved that she killed a Knight who was in service of Neverwinter, it is known this Knight was investigating some Bane’s activity around the city. The incident happened one week after Andy was acting so strange. The law is after her since then.

The twilight came suddenly for Captain’s eyes, he tends to lose himself in thoughts since his sister was accused of her crimes, but he heard someone calling for his name, from deep inside his mind he came back to the reality.

          - Captain Majer, excuse me, sir… Captain? – says Lieutenant Farmir.

          - Hum? Oh, yes, sorry Lieutenant, what is it? – says Lane with his empty look.

          - There is someone in your office waiting for you, I believe it’s important.

          - Waiting for me? In the City Watch Post?

          - Yes, sir.

          - Ok, be in charge until I get back then.

          - As you command, sir. – Farmir salutes the Captain.

Lane salutes Farmir and follows to the City Watch Post. Inside his office, sitting on a chair, a woman not that old and not that young, with a beautiful face, dressed with the uniform of The Nine, glances up and throws a pretty smile to the Captain. At first, Lane stands still for a few seconds amazed by the beauty of the woman.

          - Greetings Captain – The woman, with her pretty smile, stands and gives him a hand for a shaking.

          - Ma’am. – Captain Majer takes her hand and shakes softly.

          - You must be asking yourself why I am here, Captain. I need to inform you about some things. – her look turns more serious and her pretty smile fades from her face – I know it must be painful for you, but we have no other choice. Your sister is looking for something and we know she is working for someone. We believe she turned to Bane’s side and that she is after a relic which is guarded here in Neverwinter.

          - A relic, ma’am? – Captain Majer says with his interrogative look.

          - Indeed, Captain – The woman nods once as she speaks – I’m talking about the Sphere of Dreams and Nightmares.

          - Sounds like serious stuff.

          - It’s much more than that, Captain. The legend says that 122 and a half years ago, there were 6 men who were called The Six Lords of Neverwinter Dreams, and there were 6 men who were called The Six Lords of Neverwinter Nightmares. They lived all their lives fighting against each other. It was a battle of good against evil, but it was not a battle like you are used to see. Let’s us say it was a battle in the shadows. You know what I mean?

          - Yes, ma’am, like nobody saw it, it was secret.

          - Yes, Captain. So, one of the good guys decided to create this artifact which should trap the souls of the bad ones after their defeat, you know, the good ones were afraid that someone could resurrect them.

          - I see. Did it work?

          - The legend says that it did work, but the price of this was their lives.

          - You mean, the Dream Lords?

          - Yes, Captain, they had to give up on their lives, so they did it, but the plan wasn’t perfect. These days, the one who possess this relic can be able to invoke it’s powers for the good or for the evil, it will depend on the character of those who will have it.

          - By the Red Knight! If this is true, we must do all we can to stop Andy… - he says with a cold and firm tone of voice.

          - Agreed Captain, and you will be the one in charge of that.

          - Yes ma’am, as you command. But… tell me, how did they create this object?

          - Imagine 6 powerful men putting all their powers together to craft an object to be a soul prison. That’s it.

          - How its powers can be invoked?

          - It works like a simply magic wand, this object was created to trap the bad ones and to invoke the power of the good ones, I believe something went wrong when they were crafting it, because even the bad ones being trapped, their powers can be invoked from the sphere.

          - Gods… - Lane closes his eyes and sighs. – where is this object now? Can you tell me?

          - Certainly – the woman lowers her voice – It is well guarded in the Temple of Tyr. Now, take this Captain, this bag has some enchanted necklaces with an insignia, it can be activated by its owner voice, once activated it will glow blue when near its owner but when you get near the relic, it will glow in red and you will feel it. This also identifies its owner as a Neverwinter Elite Soldier. Normally, this is just to identify the elite soldiers, but those were crafted recently and specially because of the sphere. – she hands the bag to Lane – You know, in case if the sphere disappear, that’s why they will glow red if they get close to the sphere.

          - Yes, ma’am. – he takes the bag – Who crafted those?

          - I am not sure who, but they were crafted in the Academy of the wizards. We had to take the sphere there for the crafting, it was a dangerous move but it was necessary. You have to wear one of them and give the rest to your men who will be involved on this.

          - Understood. What should I say to activate this?

          - Simply, you take one of them, hold it on your hands and say “Dreams and Nightmares, show us the path of truths and lies”. The one who will be holding the necklace have to say that, doesn’t matter what language you speak. Keep those necklaces well guarded, Captain.

          - Don’t worry, ma’am, I will guard them with my life.

          - It’s in your blood – the woman throws her pretty smile again

          - Excuse me, ma’am?

          - Your loyalty, your potential, your capacity to be an elite soldier, your will to always help those who are in need. Being one of the bests is not only about fighting skills or strength, it’s about the way how you think before you act, how you realize your tasks. You are just like your mother, I knew her at the end of her career.

          - Oh, yes – Lane smiles a bit – she certainly was a great elite one. I heard some of her stories.

          - Very well, Captain. Is there anything you wish to ask?

          - Actually, yes. Do you really believe in this story of this sphere?

          - Well, it’s a legend that can be real or not and few people know about it, it doesn’t matter if I believe it or not, but the fact is that this sphere exits, its power is real and we can’t let your sister reach this power. We are too busy taking care of other things, so we decided that you will be in charge about it.

          - If this object is so dangerous, shouldn’t we destroy it?

          - We have tried already, didn’t work, Captain. I think the only ones who would be able to destroy it are the ones who have created it, besides, if we destroy it, the evil souls would be free. Our only choice then is to guard it well.

          - One more thing, ma’am. How do you know all that stuff?

          - I’m one of The Nine – she smiles and leaves.

Captain Majer, staring through the window, he sees the woman as she leaves the City Watch Post, his thoughts turns into a mess, but in the end he thinks: “I need to speak with Valler”.

          =====================================

          - Holy Shit! – says Valler with his widen eyes as he stares at his magical necklace glowing in blue.

          - Yeah, tell me about it… - says Captain Majer.

          - Let me guess, you want me to take some of the boys and make a post near the temple.

          - Yes, you will be in charge in the night, I’ll take care of it in the day.

          - Got it, Captain! I’ll gather the boys, 5 men would be good?

          - Yes, we don’t want to attract much attention, pick 5 men and send more 5 to my office, explain them the situation, but don’t give them much details yet.

          - Aye! I’ll tell them that we were designated to watch the streets near the temple because we believe some bandits are planning an assault. Something like that.

          - Good, go now. I will get some sleep to take my turn in the morning.

          - On my way Captain! Rest well.

Captain Majer then took his way back home, he gave her mother a goodnight kiss and went to bed. Lying on his bed, before sleep, he thought: “I wish they had finished the training already”.

            The Mission

One week has passed after Majer’s men have finished their traning. Sergeant Zig was designated to patrol the streets in the Docks District in Neverwinter once there was no special mission going on. Valler wasn’t patrolling the streets in the night anymore for Majer’s request. The Captain was worried that his sister, Andy Majer, could act in the night, so he ordered the changing of turns, not because he doesn’t trust in his soldiers, but if someone would have to take his sister down, he wanted to be the one then.

Valler was standing in guard at his post, the sun wasn’t shining so strong with the twilight arrival coming soon, the streets were clam, but suddenly he hears something. Tillion glances to the Temple of Tyr then he turns his look to Valler.

            - Shit!! – both of them speak.

            - Sir? – says one of the men.

            - It should be glowing in red! – says Tillion as he pulls out his insignia glowing in blue.

            - Inside the Temple!! – Valler gives the order.

            - Aye, sir! – all men say.

Holding their weapons up, the men get inside the temple. The priest near the altar turns to the City Watch Soldiers with a surprised face.

            - The Sphere! Where is it?! – says Valler.

            - Excuse me? – says the priest – What are you---

            - We know everything, and unless you want to upset Captain Majer, you better tell us where the damn Sphere is! – says Tillion.

Normally, they wouldn’t speak like this if was not the fact that they were very worried about the situation.

            - Fine, fine, no need of this, low your voices, there is nothing to worry about, Lady Arins is guarding it. Come with me.

The priest then takes the men through a small corner with a door in the end. Door opened, they get inside a room without windows. There was a shelf on the left side of the room with many trophies and some valuable stuff like gold statues of Tyr, a few, broken on the ground.

            - Fucking great! – Valler curses in frustration.

Arins was lying on the ground, she was bleeding hard and the Sphere was missing on its spot.

            - Sh… she… g.. go… got… - Lady Arins couldn’t hold her life for many time, so she gave up, her eyes would see no more from now on.

            - NOOOOOOO!! – says the priest falling on his kneels before Arins.

            - Brisnt! I think Arins was able to hurt her, look! – Tillion says motioning a blood trail on the ground, almost unseen. – Can you track her down?

            - Damn right, Tillion! – says Valler as he kneels down to examine the blood trail. – I think I can do it.

            - Good, I’ll go find the Captain then.

            - No! He is in his day off. Let us resolve this problem ourselves.

Once outside the temple, Valler follows the blood trail tracking someone down ending in the Docks District. Tillian takes the lead over the men and searches around the streets near the temple finding anything.

Valler was moving in silence in the shadows following the blood tracks almost losing it. He turns around a house, and well hided, he saw her, Andy, about to get on board on a ship.

            - Where am I supposed to go? – says Andy holding a bag, the Sphere was inside.

            - You will go to a place called Sundren, once you get there you will know what to do. – says a figure in a black tunic, face hided – Do you know how to use the relic?

            - Of course I know, what kind of person do you think I am? I am not those amateurs like you and those vermin’s you call skilled. – her eyes flickers, the Sphere’s power was already within her.

The man dressed with the black tunic shows fear at Andy’s word.

            - Give it up, Andy… you are already six-feet down if you don’t step away from this ship. – says Valler as he steps outside the shadows aiming with his bow on Andy. – And you know I’m not gonna miss this arrow!

The truth is that Valler could kill her already, but he didn’t want to kill his Captain’s sister, even knowing she was dangerous and wanted. Bad choice.

As the figure in a black tunic disappears into the shadows, Andy raises her hands against Valler saying something in a language that he couldn’t understand.

            - Too bad I have no time to end with your life – she says disgusted as getting on board – soldier…

            - What the... – Valler couldn’t move, but just watch the ship get away through the horizon.

Even if were guards around, they would show useless against Andy now that she has a great power within her. But Andy didn’t know that Valler was able to hear the word “Sundren”.

Once released from whatever kept Valler paralyzed, he runs back to his post near the Temple of Tyr. Tillion was wating with the men.

            - Any luck Brinst? We found nothing – says Tillion

            - Can’t say I had luck. – says Valler – She did something with her hands and spoke some words I couldn’t understand, then I couldn’t move. I don’t think it was a common spell. That bitch! She escaped on a ship. – Valler stares at the Temple entrance – What about the woman?

            - Arins? They were able to bring her back. She is resting inside the Temple. Perhaps I should go talk to her and see if I can get some information.

            - Very well. I will go talk to the General. I don’t wanna bother the Captain on his day off. – Valler runs off

            =====================================

Valler suddenly steps inside the General’s office and pants. The General glances up and frowns.

            - What is the meaning of this, Corporal? – says the General

            - My apologies, sir. – says Valler as he breaths out, then he proceeds – Andy… she…

Valler’s words were getting in the General’s ears making him close his eyes, then he sighs. The worst has happened. The Sphere fell on wrong hands and somehow, they would have to get it back to Neverwinter, and that is a big problem. How?

            - Very well, you can go for now, get back to your post and keep alert, Corporal.

            - Aye, sir!

The General was already writing some notes on a scroll when Valler left the office.

            =====================================

            - I don’t know what really happened, Corporal, I was guarding the relic as usual then I felt something weird, like if someone was at my back, so I turned. Few seconds, and my blade was cutting someone and then everything went blank and I fell on the ground – says Lady Arins lying on a bed inside the Temple of Tyr – I don’t know who she is, but she is really good, it’s not that easy to get inside a Temple like this and take someone like me down so easily. That is not good, not good at all.

            - I understand. She is Captain Majer’s sister, Andy… – says Tillion – Thanks for your time Lady Arins, now rest and recover yourself, Neverwinter needs you well – he smiles and leaves the Temple.

            =====================================

Inside his office, the General of the City Watch of Neverwinter finishes his notes; he stands from his chair and walks to get in the Captain Majer’s room. Segeant Zig Howkee was preparing himself to assume his turn in the night, he use to be in charge when Captain Majer is in a day off.

            - Sir! – Zig salutes

            - Sergeant, – The General salutes back – go and say to the Captain I need him in my office.

            - Consider it done, sir!

\\ first of all, remember to ask a DM permission to post stuff like that :P \\

              The Present

Captain Majer was walking through the Viridale Forest, he was alone, the place seemed magical and everything seemed to go right. A girl with dark long hair and black eyes, was standing by a lake holding a white flower on her hands, she was giving her back to the Captain.

              - Excuse me, miss? – says Captain Majer.

The girl didn’t move. The wind was blowing through their hairs, the animals were running to all directions, the sound of nature could be heard, the smell of the wild could be felt and the sun was shining in the middle of the virgin sky.

              - Miss, this place is not safe. Do you need an escort to safety? – says Majer approaching a bit more.

Captain Majer was staring at her back as she turned to him. The flower which was on the girl’s hands turned into a sphere.

              - Are you looking for this, Captain? – says the girl with a lovely voice and a pretty smile on her face.

              - Andy!! – Majer draws his blades – You shall not hurt people, no more! – He charges against the girl.

Lane was held by the sphere’s power on Andy’s hands. Andy was staring into Lane’s eyes, her eyes were trying to show him something. He gave her an interrogative look.

              - Kill me… - says Andy almost in a whisper as tears could be seen falling from her eyes.

Lane got confused, he couldn’t move, he didn’t know what do or what to say, he almost forgot who he is, who he was. Everything around him seemed empty, like if the forest wasn’t there, the sun shine wasn’t shining, the animals weren’t running to everywhere, no sound, no smell, nothing! Nothing there except for his sister.

              - I… I’m lost… I’ve failed – he says falling on his kneels letting his blades fall on the ground.

The worst thing that Lane was afraid has happened, he couldn’t kill his sister, even knowing that this was necessary, he just couldn’t do it.

“You may be lost, my child, but you have not failed and you are not alone “

Lane could hear a voice inside his mind, a voice that could calm him, giving him strength, bringing him back from the darkness which was about to take him, the darkness from inside.

              - Who is this? I feel you came to save me. – says Lane looking around and stopping his look on his sister, but that voice wasn’t coming from her.

“I am the one who is within your heart and your soul, my child”

Then he knew. The one who he follows the path was talking to him somehow. An image of an imposing Lady dressed in a wonderful and shiny Red Armor came into his mind. She was wearing a longsword and a red shield with the symbol of a red knight chess piece in the middle.

              - Oh, Great Lady. I don’t deserve to hear your voice – Lane glances down ashamed.

              “Raise”

Lane didn’t wait a single second to do it.

              - Kill me… - says Andy again.

“I give you protection, my child, I give you strength, I give you inspiration to lead those under your command to victory. I give you what you need in the right time”

              - I don’t know what to do, Great Lady. – says Lane

“The ring, my child, the ring…”

Lane felt that the voice inside his head has fade. Andy suddenly became hostile.

              - It’s time to die, big brother – her eyes became red

              - No Andy, it is not, you can’t hurt me, listen to me, you are not being yourself. Come on Andy! WAKE UP!

Andy spoke some weird words and an army of men raised behind her, she was holding the sphere only with her left hand like pointing it at her brother.

Lane showed no fear. He saw over his shoulder, all his men, holding their weapons ready for battle, they was only in need of an order, no more than that. The order came.

              - They are all yours, but she is mine! Go, Neverwinter, show them who you are!

The battle then began. The Neverwinter soldiers were extremely in lass numbers, but their skills showed graceful. Lane was walking in the middle of the battle like if no one could hurt him, he was walking to her, to his sister, then he was running, he was charging against her.

              - DIEEEE, BROTHER!

              - ANDYYY, WAKE UUUP!

Andy was holding the sphere on her left hand and using her right hand as a weapon. Lane felt one of her nails cutting his face on the left, he also felt one of his blades penetrating her sister’s heart. Then he saw, he saw the thing that could explain everything. For lass than a second, he saw a shiny thing on one of her fingers. The ring, so that was it.

The forest which seemed magical has fade, everything turned blank.

              =====================================

NOOOOOOO!! – Captain Majer wakes, almost jumping off from his bed in Sundren Comfort. Breathing heavily and sweating hard, he places a hand on his face and feels it.

How could it be real? How could the scar be real? He was dreaming.

              - A sign! – His eyes go wide – It’s a sign!! – Then he calms down – But how I will take it off from her? – He thinks for a moment in silence, then he jumps off from his bed – Sehron!!

              =====================================

                Their Loyalty

-... and this is how I got this scar, Sergeant. - says Captain Majer to Zig.

They were on a meeting in one of Sundren Confort's room, the Corporals Shorn, Valler, Tillion and some of the soldiers were there as well, the rest of the men were out taking care of their duties.

                - Then, there is still hope for Andy, sir. - says Valler.

                - I would like to try to remove this ring from her, but I won't do it if you don't agree with me, I don't want to risk your lives for something personal, besides, our orders are to take her down and bring back the sphere to Neverwinter. - Captain Majer sighs - Still, she is my sister, and perhaps there is a chance to save her, and...

                - No need to explain, Captain, we are with you no matter what is your decision, - says Seregant Zig staring over his shoulder to the rest of the men - right, boys?

                - Like if I have something better to do. - says Valler throwing an ironic smile.

                - I'm with you, sir - says Francisco throwing up his dagger which turns several times on the air to get it back graceful.

                - I don't think you need my answere, sir - says Shorn smiling.

                - Aye, hold your hopes very tight, Captain, together we may save Andy! - says Tillion firmly.

Lane couldn't hold a happy smile as he was listening every single man saying those words, words that was giving the Captain hope and strenght, the same feeling he felt in his dream when he was listening his Goddess voice inside his mind. His words didn't come out from his mouth, but his look was already showing how grateful and proud he was to have these men under his command.

No matter what, these soldiers would follow their commander to face their deaths if needed, but they would die fighting along side together. No matter what, no matter what enemies would stand in their way, no matter what powers they would have to face. These men wouldn't turn their backs to their Captain.

                - Thank you, all of you! - says Lane.

                - Now tell us, sir, what do you have in mind? - says Zig.

                - Yes, - Lane nods - I have spoke with Hano and Tamryn about this situation when I went to the Triumvirate Temple, they said they will help us, but I was thinking about how we will remove the ring from Andy, so I thought of Sehron.

                - I heard of him, he is skilled indeed, I suppose he could remove the ring from her, but, wouldn't the sphere detect his intentions? - says Sergeant Zig.

                - I guess the sphere could detect any kind of power, but what if he go without any magic gear? - says Tillion.

                - That's what I was thinking about, but he would have to agree with us, and I don't know if he would accept this task. - says Lane.

                - What if we hire someone else to do it? I could sneak around her, but to take off her ring, that I couldn't do. - says Valler.

                - Agreed, the problem is how to take her ring off, perhpas we can find someone able to do it. - says Shorn.

                - I thought about that too, the problem is that Sehron is the only one with those skills that I trust.

                - Damn... We have no choice but to find Sehron then - says Tillion.

                - Very well then. You know what to do boys, let's move. - says Lane

                - Aye, sir!! - say all the men.

                  The battle

Captain Majer and all of his men were walking throught the Viridale Forest, this time things were not like a dream, everything seemed pretty much real, the smell, the animals, the gnolls, goblins, orcs and ogres. They had to fight some of those criatures at first, not big deal for the soldiers who took control of the situation in a few minutes. None of Majer's men got hurt.

Lane takes off his necklace and holds it on his hands.

                  - She is here... - his insignia was glowing in red.

                  - Aye, but she is a bit far yet, otherwise she would have showed herself already - says Sergeant Zig.

                  - Captain, allow me to scout, I may find her if I get lucky - says Valler.

                  - Do you have any magic stuff on you, Corporal? - says Majer.

                  - No, sir.

                  - Very well, go for it.

Valler desappeared into the shadows, tracking down those stepfoots that appeared to be of a girl, probably Andy. He was silent and precise, the rest of the men were holding position waiting for Valler's return. After a few minutes he did so.

                  - She's just ahead, and she is not alone, sir.

                  - What do you mean? - Lane gives Valler a worried look.

                  - There are... - he pauses for a moment - soldiers. We will have to fight them I suppose.

                  - Dammit... - Lane thinks for a moment and glances around - Very well, everybody stay behind that rock, I'll go first and try to talk to her. Oh, by the way, I couldn't contact Sehron, so we are on our own, if any of you get the chance to take the ring off from her, do it. Men, focus on your tasks, do not go to me if I fall, focus on the mission, and that's an order! - he finishes firmly.

Aye, sir! - all men say.

Lane takes a long and deep breath, he walks forward, fearing the worse. He passes the rock which their men would stay behind and walks a bit more. He sees, there is Andy saying something to about 50 armed men. Armors, swords, axes, bows.

                  - I hope they are not skilled enough, it will be 17 against 50 - he muttters to himself.

All men were giving their backs to Lane while his sister was in front of them. Lane was spotted by her at first

                  - Awww, if isn't my big brother - Andy's eyes were red, full of hate.

                  - Andy... - says Lane sadly.

                  - What was in your mind to show up like this in front of me? Have you decided to take the eternal rest, big brother?

                  - I came in hope to save you and change your mind, Neverwinter wants you dead, I got orders to take you down and bring back the sphere you have stolen, still, I don’t want more death around me.

                  - Why are you telling me this? Do you think I don't know what your task here is? Anyway, you better go back and tell your superiors that you have failed.

                  - I can not do it Andy...

                  - Alright, come and take then. - she holds the sphere on her left hand and points it to Lane.

                  - What about these soldiers, are they here by their will or you have forced them with some kind of spell? - Lane frowns as he stares at the men to the sphere, it was the first time he was looking at it.

                  - Ask them yourself, big brother - Andy smirks.

One of the man stands and raises his axe to charge against the Captain, Lane quickly draws his blades and dodges the attack cutting the man several times in a few seconds. The man falls lifeless and Lane glances back to Andy. "It was not much, but at least it's one less", he thought.

                  - What are you waiting for, useless? Get him! - says Andy smiling pleased at the situation.

                  - Shit! - says Lane preparing himself to engage all those men.

Captain Majer thought it would be his end, but suddenly, his men were already their to engage the enemies. The battle began. The first line of Andy's men fell quickly, once the Neverwinter soldiers were graceful and talented in the manners of battle tactics.

Valler, from behind, shooting with his bow killed 4. Andy didn’t like it at all and then she spoke some weird words and a lighting bolt went out from the sphere to hit Valler making him unconscious. He would not survive in the middle of the battle, lucky him to be where he was.

The battle then proceeds, Andy watches quietly for a time smiling pleased as his men fall one by one, obviously she doesn’t care at all for their lives and also she wasn’t worry about anything
One of the Neverwinter soldiers was badly wounded; Captain Majer from a certain distance saw the scene and screamed an order to him.

                  - Retreat from the battle Soldier! – says Lane as he fights taking one more enemy down.

                  - Aye, sir! – says the soldier falling back from the battle to fall in pain on the ground.

Shorn, with great moves was feinting through the enemies stabbing them on their backs before they have the chance to turn around, but, unfortunately he failed to feint one of the enemies who took him down hitting him with a large sword.

                  - Shorn!! – says Sergeant Zig loudly – Take him off the battle, I’ll handle those myself!

                  - Aye, sir! – the soldiers near Zig then went to take Shorn off the battle.

Things were then complicated to the Neverwinter soldiers, the two soldiers who took Shorn off the battle fell unconscious after a fireball which went out from the sphere to fell upon them on their way back.

Those from Neverwinter who were off the battle weren’t dead yet, but they would not hold their lives for too long.

                  - This must end Sergeant!! – Lane yells.

                  - Go for it Captain!! – Zig yells back.

Lane then fought his way to Andy, he didn’t focus his skills to kill those on his way, he just wanted to get off the battle to meet with his sister, and he did so. Few steps to get close enough.

                  - Where do you think you are going big brother? – Andy holds the sphere up to release the power.

                  - This must end Andy, even if I have to kill you – says Lane trying to taunt her. Useless.

The sphere released some silver rays to hit the Captain several times. Lane fell on his kneels to spit some blood on the floor, then he raised again.

                  - You will need much more than that to take me down Andy – says Lane with blood flowing through his mouth falling over his chin.

                  - As you wish, big brother!

Some light went out from the sphere to reach Andy’s right arm, the sphere was glowing strongly so as her right arm. Then she made her move, she charged against her brother, using her right arm as a sword.

                  - DIEEEE, BROTHER!

                  - ANDYYY, WAKE UUUP!

One second before to get hit by Andy, he saw, it was shiny, it was deadly, it was full of darkness, and now it was inside his chest. Her arm has broken his armor, blood was falling all over his body, he was looking into Andy’s eyes, blood spits, pain, his vision was slowly fading, he was about to die. “I can fail on men eyes, but I can not fail on you great Lady” he thought it before putting all his will together to make a last effort cutting off Andy’s right hand to throw it away with the damned ring.

Lane knew it all the time, he had a dream about it after all, but this part he didn’t say to anybody, he kept to him. He didn’t care if he would have to die, he just couldn’t fail on the Red Knight, and he didn’t. “I give you what you need in the right time”, that was his last thought before his last breath, he was smiling, he was in need of the eternal rest by her side, the one who he was following since his childhood.

Somewhere in the Viridale Forest, blood was everywhere, Lane was lying lifeless on the ground, by his side was his sister, she was dazed, her eyes got back to normal, she didn’t understand anything when the memories of the terrible things she have done reached her mind suddenly, she cried.

The battle has ended with death for the banites and for Captain Majer. Hopefully, wasn’t too late for the wounded ones, Neverwinter had only one loss, maybe the more important one in that scene.

Tillion was the first one who saw brother and sister on the ground, Andy was breathing hardly, she was losing blood fast, he took two healing potions to let the liquid fall on her mouth as her wound was closing where her hand should be. Andy was weak but at least she would survive.

                  - Don’t save me – says Andy with her weak voice, crying – I don’t deserve to be saved.

                  - Your brother gave up on his life to save you, you are not going to die this day – says Tillion sadly.

                  - I’m so sorry, please forgive me, I didn’t want to act like I did. I don’t know what happened – Andy couldn’t understand why she did act like that all this time.

                  - It wasn’t your fault Andy – Sergeant Zig walks by with the rest of the men – you were being possessed by this – he shows her hand with the ring.

                  - Wait, don’t touch it, I still have the sphere’s power, allow me cast you some protection. – Andy does so.

                  - Wait, if you still have it’s power, can you bring our Captain back? – says one of the soldiers.

                  - Let me see – she focus the power to perform a resurrection, but it shows useless like if a stronger force was blocking the sphere. Andy breaths out weakly, tears don’t stop falling from her eyes – I’m sorry Lane, I guess the Gods want you to rest this time. – Andy kisses her brother on his face. – Farewell, I’ll honor your memories from now on.

                  - He lived all his life saving people and doing the good, I’m sure the Red Knight will provide comfort to his soul – says Zig putting the ring and the sphere in his backpack. – Alright boys, let’s move out, we shall return to Neverwinter in the next ship. Oh, Andy, you will have to come with us, once we get there we will explain what happened and I’m sure you will be set free when we prove it wasn’t your fault, Tyr’s justice won’t fail on you.

Andy gave a nod to Zig and they got back to Sundren Comfort to wait for two days a ship to get them back to Neverwinter. In these two days, Majer’s men told the story to everyone interested in listening, but Zig was the one who told the story in the Triumvirate temple once he knew that Captain Majer had friends there.

                    =====================================

Back in Neverwinter, Andy was set free after her innocence has been proved, she was about to get in a ship with her mother who was extremely happy to have her daughter back but sad to have lost her son.

                    - Take care you two, if you need anything just write to us – says Zig as he hugs them both.

                    - I will dedicate my life to serve the Red Knight for the glory of her and in the name of my brother – says Andy.

                    - Aye, where are you going by the way? – says Zig.

                    - Where people are in need of some good – Andy smiles a bit.

                    - Some place called Sundren… – says Marees.
