Character Name: Zola Krown
Race: Human
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Class: Monk
Physical Description:
About 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with dark brown hair that comes down to just above the shoulders, and dark brown eyes. Fairly athletic build, this woman has a very cool and calm presence about her. She always appears determined in whatever task she is pursuing. She is very silent, but not in a shy way. She seems to be a bit of the loner type. She isn't real friendly, but she isn't necessarily rude either - limiting what she says to only the most practical things.
History:
Zola Krown was born in Targos, a small village north of Sundren in Icewind Dale. She was born in the Krown family, reputable for both its generosity and especially for its history of 'heroes'. Indeed, almost every generation of the Krown family had in it at least one noble soldier who had sacrificed him or herself in some grand battle in defense of the village. Even more famous, every third or fourth generation would produce an almighty paladin, one of the most honored titles in all the realms a soldier could take. In short, the Krown family is a family of heroes, and it is famous for it. Such abundance of good deeds have led some to rumor that, "it must be in their blood".
20 years ago, Zola Krown was born. It had been four generations since the Krown family had seen a paladin, and they were sure that Zola would be their next. But of course, things are seldom as they appear in the Realms. Instead of following family tradition of joining the local militia, Zola had isolated herself, at age 18, in a monastery and trained with the monks of the Red Knight. Although her parents did their best to show approval of her decision, there was a definite air of disappointment in them, and Zola hated them for it. Zola would become the first monk in the Krown family. Zola?s younger sister, Kalista (age 12 at the time), resented Zola?s decision. She openly accused Zola for being selfish, choosing the personal power that the monks could give over protecting the village. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth.
Zola?s motive for pursuing the path of the monk was just that - selfish. The first thing Zola found attractive at the Monastery of the Red Knight was how morally unobligated it seemed, at least, in contrast to her family. The monks at the monastery did give lectures on morals every now and then, but such lectures were always kept short and it was clear that the monks paid them very little attention. Perhaps it was due to the deity the monks revered, the Lady of Strategy. After all, such a Goddess is first known for being a Lady of Tactics, and only second for being a Lady of Morals. Or perhaps the lack of paladins or priests at the monastery also contributed to its small emphasis on moral philosophy. Or perhaps...it was something much more sinister. Whatever the reason, moral philosophy at the Targos Monastery of the Red Knight was but a footnote, and the contrast between the lectures of these Red monks and the constant badgering of morals by Zola?s parents was sharp indeed. Zola quickly embraced the teachings of these Red Monks, and was quickly accepted into their monastery. Zola?s seemingly selfish reasons for joining were not even factored into their decision to take her under their arm. Zola?s two year training had just begun.
Zola quickly grew in the monastery. She loved the total isolation she got from her family. One of her favorite aspects of the monastery was not where the focus was, but where the focus wasn?t - how to protect innocent lives. The monastery focused all of its teachings on how to better one's body through intense physical training and meditation. The monks spoke much of how to better oneself, but they seldom spoke of how to better others. For Zola, making her body into a temple, a deadly weapon, was all that she cared for. Notions such as ?A duty to protect the innocent? were merely distractions that got in the way of what everyone?s true goal in life should be - to get stronger. She had been taught, by her family, all of the selfless sacrifices in battle that dotted their tree. A Waste, is what she thought of them. And this was the future they had in store for her? Joining the militia, only to die needlessly to protect a bunch of citizens who can't protect themselves? Everyone must pull their own weight. That is the philosophy Zola believed in.
As soon as Zola graduated from the monastery, she had left immediately without saying a word to her family. She wanted to get away from the village as soon as possible. She wanted to get away from all those sappy looks people gave her, looks of hope, hope that she would give their life for them by serving the militia. Why? Why should she give her life for them? If they are too weak to protect themselves, then they shouldn't be allowed to live long enough to see children. As a member of the Krown family, Zola often recieved pleas from folk needing help, and over time, she began to curse her own blood.
Two years later, she has made her way into Sundren at last, ready to seek out adventure and continue to harness her body, to train it, and to make it stronger. However, she needed work. Even monks need a limited amount of gold to buy food to eat. And besides, Zola didn?t just want to become stronger. She also wanted some kind of profession, a living that would satisfy her, one that she would excel at. To make best use of her training as a monk, she would seek a job that demanded high skills in infiltration. Quickly, perhaps even foolishly, Zola decided she wanted to become an assassin. Why? In Zola?s eyes, killing those who must higher guards to protect themselves is doing a great service to the world - and she would welcome the opportunity. She has a very "natural selection" way of looking at things, and she seeks the job of an assassin not for the gold, but for the opportunity to help "rid the realms of its fat". Zola is exceedingly arrogant, and would never consider herself part of this ?fat.?
Although, having just graduated from her academy, Zola is far too inexperienced to work as an assassin, such a profession has become her dream, her obsession - and she would do anything to reach that goal.
In short, Zola is the Krown?s bad apple, a ?bad? example of an otherwise ?good? family.
