  • Heroes of Sundren: Coda

A young historian opens a large tome in the 'Hall of Heroes' section of Aquor's Museum of Wonders. The room is filled with the scent of dust and aged scrolls; rows of pedestals line the hall, each holding up a thick volume of bindings and parchment.

The historian has to suppress a fit of coughing as his action loose a small duststorm in the area. He is dressed simply and wears a tag on his collar that reads: Antony, Assistant to Director Belle.

He makes a mental note to schedule more frequent janitorial services before flipping past the cover and title pages of his chosen book. As he reaches the foreword, however, he cannot help but stop to read words he long since memorized:

We are both what we make of ourselves and what others make us out to be. We are at once the keepers and inheritors of our own history. Whether by strength or wit, spell or sword, success or failure, we have made our mark on this valley.

We are each of us gifted and cursed, nobles and savages, heroes and villains.

We are each of us Sundren, and Sundren is our legacy.

The historian smiles briefly before flipping to the nearest empty page, and begins writing.
Here, you will find a smattering of history concerning various Sundren player characters. The recorded events below describe what happens to our beloved (or reviled, as the case may be) player characters during the 50-year timejump between the current year (1382) and the relaunch (1432). All of these characters were volunteered for inclusion in this collected history.

If you would like to submit one of your player characters for inclusion here, please note the following:
    • By submitting your character for this process, you will give up creative control of your character’s destiny and allow the Sundren staff to determine your character’s fate. As a reminder, all existing characters prior to the relaunch are required to have (a) died; or (b) left the valley in the intervening 50 years before the relaunch.

    • There is no requirement concerning level, faction reputation, fame, or notoriety for your character to be included here. While faction leaders and major players will likely receive lengthier treatises, we won’t object to including lesser-known characters as long as you accept the other requirements.

    • We will do our best to accommodate your wishes/goals for your characters, but we will not be bound to those ideas if we don’t think they are reasonable, or if storytelling necessities dictate otherwise.

    • There will be no other formal rewards for inclusion in this process other than your character’s immortalization here on the forums. References to these characters may pop up on custom DM items … but no guarantees.

    • Submissions will be accepted up until the official date of the relaunch.

If the above requirements are okay with you and you would like to submit your character for inclusion here, please create a character request and provide us the following information:
    • Character Name
    • Faction, if any
    • Brief Summary of your character’s significant accomplishments in Sundren, if any
    • Goals that your character might work on during the 50 year timejump
    • Preferred Fate (e.g., died defending his/her faction, left the valley to pursue his goals, etc.)

You are of course welcome to write your own endings for your characters, as long as no godmoding or metagaming is involved (and as long as they pass on or leave the valley before the timejump). These posts are purely for those who want to leave it up to the Sundren staff to write their ending for them.

Thank you for being a part of the Sundren community, and we look forward to seeing new collaborative stories with your new characters soon!

The Final Battle of Kyle Rendell

    KYLE RENDELL
    "The Peerless Swordsman"
Blackwood's most infamous member, Kyle Rendell. The swordsman had an impressive pedigree. Kyle fought in battles that shook the foundation of the nation, allied himself to mighty champions like Lord Tornbrook, and sought out the toughest fights simply for the joy of battle. Truly, Kyle Rendell, the 'Sword Saint', was a man of infinite tastes for combat.

Which made his final battle all that more legendary. Calling forth Vaer Vitori, the progenitor of the Red Blade style of combat, Kyle Rendell met him on the top of Mount Schild. A storm brewed in the distance, lightning flashing as thunder crackled around the two supreme swordsmen as their blades clashed with a ring of tempered steel. They fought for a full hour, neither man giving an inch. Their swords moved like the lightning now surrounding them, each touch resounding like the thunder that rattled their bones.

Finally, the battle came to an end. Vitori misjudged a feint, and found himself on the defensive. Backed against a cliff, the aged swordsman faced the mighty Rendell as rain pelted his face. Kyle raised his blade, prepared to strike him down. He took a powerful step forward, swinging his blade down. And then the unthinkable happened.

    He sneezed.

A torrent of air threw his blade off balance, and he went tumbling down the side of Mount Schild. Painfully, for a solid thirty seconds, Kyle tumbled, rolled, stumbled, and fell down the side of Schild to Vitori's amazement. With a final crash, Kyle landed on his ass at the bottom; his scream of pain echoed within the small valley. Swearing vengeance, Kyle waddled off to parts unknown, his battle forever debated among the drunkards in taverns as to whether or not he was the Greatest Swordsman in the World. Either way, Kyle was never seen again in the valley of Sundren.

      OLIVIA KIMARIS
      "Knight of the Northern Watch"

The Northern Watch's influence grows within Avanthyr in large part due to the efforts of Olivia and her husband. As faithful lieutenants to Grandmaster Aurelianus, the dragonblooded couple become renowned as humanitarians and stalwart defenders of the Port.

Olivia served dutifully in the Watch until retirement, upon which she became elected to Avanthyr's General Assembly by overwhelming popular support. From there, she made a name for herself among the noble circles thanks to her relentless approach to politics, delivering castigating speeches and rallying demonstrations against any motion that sacrificed the safety or well-being of the commonfolk for the enrichment of the upper class.

She passed unremarkably in her sleep and was mourned by Avanthyr's people. To honor her life, her twin children embark on a pilgrimmage in search of their draconic ancestry. Meanwhile, the darker forces of the Port grow emboldened, knowing that they are finally free of the gaze of one of Avanthyr's most vigilant watchers.

        MARCUS WAYNARD
        "One With Death"

Myrkul. His resurrection signaled to all of Faerun that death can not stop the Lord of the Dead. Instrumental to the Lord of Bones’ return was Marcus Waynard, a Horned Harbinger dedicated to Myrkul, whose power was almost as terrifying as his master’s.

Though Myrkul found new life due to his acolytes’ efforts in Sundren, he soon appeared before Marcus in a vision, commanding him to spread the word of Myrkul’s return to power throughout the rest of the realms. Marcus obeyed; it is said that no town or city could ever erase the scent of death that followed in this faithful Horned Harbinger’s wake.

The name of Marcus Waynard soon became synonymous with 'death,' for the Harbinger traveled the Realms to spread his Lord's work. Teaching that death was the natural ending for all life, his flock grew, and his position as a Harbinger brought his work to many, for good and for ill. At the end of his life, Marcus gladly gave his body and soul to the formerly Dead God, serving as a faithful Death Knight in Myrkul's temple.

          MURIN STOUTHAMMER
"Stouthammer Ales. Because War is Brewing"

There is perhaps no better-known brewery within the Valley than that of Stouthammer Ales. Popularized by its catchy slogans and the ale’s unquestionable efficacy, Murin’s entrepreneurial venture soon expanded like wildfire across Sundren. The dwarf leveraged Grand Marshall Datton’s reformation of Sestra’s government and relaxed trade regulations to re-establish a presence in Sestra. He made promising strides in negotiations with House Pendraig. His brewery in Avanthyr was cited as one of the key factors that drove trade and wealth back to the port.

That’s not to say there weren’t hard times. In 1407, One of Murin’s promotional ideas - hiring bards to accompany adventurers and sing about the quality of his ales after every battle - soon earned him and his brewery the ire of travelers and warriors across the valley. Having poured significant resources into the training and hiring of these bards, the dwarf soon found himself cash-strapped and with little to show for his investment.

Eventually, his image would recover after he developed a new kind of ale - one that never went flat. Buoyed by ingenuity, magic, and a dash of a - to this day - secret ingredient, Murin’s Stouthammer Spectacular became widely demanded by the commonfolk and nobility alike. With this ingenious concoction, Murin soon earned back the goodwill of the people.

By 1432, fresh off the success of his business venture and wealthy beyond measure, the good dwarf resigned from his position as Brewmaster, turning the keys to his empire over to an unnamed apprentice. Murin himself departed for his home at Citadel Adbar, content in his success in the valley; the people of Avanthyr threw a festival and parade to honor him and his legacy.
