  • What Wants For Good

This is the team good group effort at creating an RP Post for our kick off event. As we have more team good events, we'll add to this thread.

    Murder on the Road

The group arrived by ones and twos to Port Avanthyr. Their destination was a stall set up behind the Menacing Mariner where a representative of House Blackburn could be found. Each of them came with their own motivations, but whatever those motivations were, the group’s true courage and dedication to the common good would soon be called upon.

One of the group was a tall, lean man by the name of Chazre Kenner. Both strength and speed were evidenced by this warrior’s stance, and the various weapons he carried were obviously well cared for. Though he could be imposing, his cheerful demeanor meant that he more often carried a smile on his face than a scowl. He had traveled from far-away Cormyr to lend aid to the temple of Selune in Port Avanthyr. It was shortly after arriving in the port city that he learned the specifics of the struggles in the Valley and he set himself the task of finding ways to help.

Another who would become a part of the group was Dawnbringer Wil White, a tall, willowy woman with a bright, attentive gaze. She wore a breastplate and carried a shield, a simple but frosty looking mace fastened in her belt. Despite oddly whitening hair she seemed to be in her mid twenties. With a cheerful demeanor and a charming smile, it was easy to feel welcome in her presence. She greeted the other arrivals with a friendly expression, nods and by name when she knew them, every now and then turning to exchange a few quiet words with the large red-headed boy name Dane Kensbane.

Dane was a tall and broad shouldered, if a somewhat shy, youth of sixteen. If removed from his Triad marked armor he looked very much the image a provincial farm boy, but he moved naturally in it, as if he had been born into it. He stayed at Wil’s right hand with a look of quiet concern in his eyes while he carefully observed the scene around him. He wore a large shield with the heraldry of Ilmater upon his back, and a hand-and-a-half sword belted at his left hip with red linen bands trailing from the pommel.

Two red-clad legionnaires also were found in attendance. Lorenth bore an impressive mustache and a staff which spoke to his arcane profession. His companion Kawth was less easy to read, in part because he sported a deep hood. Both were natives of Sundren and well aware of the dangers faced by the people who called the place home.

Another companion who favoured red was the young bard by the name of Alyssandra De’Whelm. Though small in stature, this melodic youth was big of heart and wanted nothing more than to help those in need, spreading Sune’s loving beauty in a world of ugly evil.

Finally, a man of about average height stood off to the side of the group with a hand resting on the hilt of the rapier at his side. He looked to be very lean, though more so toned, with a rugged demeanor donning well made leather armor. Most of the group already had the pleasure of meeting the man whose name was Eli Dentyn. He seemed somewhat distant as he traveled to Port Avanthyr, keeping his eyes and ears alert along the way. As Eli already had an unsettling welcome to the Valley at the hands of brigands, he was wary of the roads. Nonetheless, he came to Sundren for work and with his work cut short, Eli was eager to hear out what the Port’s Blackburn family had to say. He was willing to help where he could, feeling something had to be done to make change in the Valley.

The stall where the Blackburn’s men were found was bustling with activity, and at its heart was the man they sought: Aidous Rayne, craftsman and liaison to the Blackburn family. He greeted each of them in turn as they arrived and began to tell them about the things that needed to be done and the paperwork that would be required if they were interested in the working for the Blackburn family.

It was a fairly orderly and uneventful meeting until Rayne was interrupted by the cries of a child sprinting down the street. The child, a wide-eyed girl of nine by the name of Tory, had been accompanying a caravan nearby when it was attacked. She had escaped and managed to make the journey to the Port on her own.

The group quickly decided to take action, and were given a map marked with the caravan’s route by Rayne. Luckily, Lorenth was familiar with the land in that area from his time patrolling before the Second Sundering and was able to lead the group on the quickest path to the likely scene of the attack. Despite Wil seeming to have some problems walking at as a brisk pace as the rest of them they arrived in good time - though it wasn’t good enough. They found the caravan in shambles with the attackers still picking over the caravan’s cargo.

As they prepared for conflict, Chaz asked “So is it a frontal assault then?” In response, Kawth said nothing. He simply stepped forward and in a loud, firm voice addressed the bandits. The bandits were in no mood to talk however, and immediately grabbed their weapons, charging the group with some fervour.

It was a hard fought conflict in which Kawth was momentarily knocked unconscious, but in the end the group of do-gooders prevailed. After dispatching the raiders, the group began to hear an eerie murmuring from the other side of the caravan. As the group moved to investigate, it became clear that the sounds were coming from an old man in dark robes. He seemed to be involved in some kind of ritual, chanting over the dismembered pieces of a caravanner’s corpse carefully placed in a circle next to a pile of skulls.

“Interrupt him!” Wil called out. And while everyone else stood around, mouths agape at the gruesome scene and the blasphemous ramblings of the evil man, Alyssandra bravely charged forward and hit him like a hammer with a devastating shield-bash. The others, broken from their stunned disgust, quickly rushed forward to support her and moved to subdue the old man before he could do any more harm. “...Preposterous. You’d interrupt the workings of a GOD; learn your place!” the deranged man exclaimed after gathering himself from Alyssandra’s shield-bash. However, his ranting-threats turned out to be idle as he was quickly knocked unconscious by the combined efforts of the group.

Once the strange man was unconscious, Kawth made sure he wouldn’t bleed to death before tying and gagging him. A quick search of the prisoner, along with a search of the surrounding area, revealed several symbols of the god of murder, Bhaal. Dane fell to his knees and wept silent, bitter tears at the needless suffering of the caravanners and Wil moved past him to examine the ritual circle.

While most of the group was investigating the cultist and his ritual, Eli walked about the wreckage of the caravan. The wagons were looted, the wares rifled through, and the caravanners gruesomely slaughtered. A scene that would certainly need a good few strong ales to aid in dismissing from his mind. The raiders were well trained and equipped for an average lot of bandits. With a swift kick to one of the raiders, a dagger on his corpse caught Eli’s eye. “Thank ya, mate. Ya don’t need this anymore..,” he said before rejoining the rest of the group.

The decision was made for Lorenth and Kawth, being members of the Legion, to take the prisoner and one of the symbols of Bhaal to Port Avanthyr while the rest of the group remained protecting the caravan goods and investigating the scene. Though none of the group were particularly skilled trackers, Dane and Chaz were able to follow the bandits’ trail for a distance, but lost it at the side of a nearby lake. Wil made sure to search for more Bhaalite symbols and instructed those who had found such to not hold onto them but place them on the ground to be destroyed.

Meriadoc forces arrived soon after and took custody of the caravan, and, though they thanked the group for their aid, they also made it clear that they were not too keen on being bested by a group of adventurers. The Meriadocs’ men also moved to secure the dark symbols as a source for possible scrying of the cultist origin. With the guardsmen taking control of things, the remainder of the group was able to leave the grisly massacre behind and return to Port Avanthyr to meet up with the two legionnaires.

Having left the group behind to defend the scene, Lorenth and Kawth returned to the Port to bring the killer to justice. They brought him before Aidous Rayne and explained the caravan's state, location and the prisoner’s crimes. He was then handed over to the Northern Watch to hold him in the Meriadoc's custody. The rest of the team arrived a while after the legionnaires had given their reports and been processed by the Meriadoc authorities.

Once the group had all gathered and informed Rayne of the caravan's fate, each of them signed on with the Blackburn foreman to aid the efforts of House Blackburn. They each received a signet ring of House Blackburn as a symbol of their allegiance, and as thanks for their swift and selfless aid with the attacked caravan.
