  • To Be a Pirate

"Y'see that o'er the ocean, m'boy? That's the life. Everythin' a man be wantin' lay o'er it's hold... does nae be gettin' any simpler than that." Sitting comfortably on his father's broad shoulder, the wee lad Valerian, still in the single digits of his life, beamed in admiration while his father pointed out the sun drawing over the sea's horizon.

"Are you really a pirate, papa!?" Valerian's face gleamed ever so slightly but came to a disillusioned frown, "But... Momma says you always go fishing a lot..."

The father gave a glance over to his son and let out a hesitant sigh, looking steadily back towards the sunset. "Son..." He hesitated, "Aye. I know I be ne'er around for you the past months. But I'll be makin' a change. Yer me life now for that be a father's promise. E'er since I laid these eyes on you when ye came into this bleak world, I knew you were somethin' extraodinary and doubly so!" He flashed Valeriann a cheeky grin and huddled him closer to his head. "I promise ye."

"Papa," Valerian brightened, "I wanna be a pirate when I grow up! I'll plunder booty and drink grog al-lll day! Ah..." His voice squeeked in a child's high-pitched tone, "Arrr!"

His father laughed pleasantly as any father would, placing a hold over his son, and laid him back on the ground with a heavy grunt, "I know ye'll make me proud, laddie -- Though, do nae e'er forget that humble tale I told ye the other night. I be serious here." He offered a nod down to Valerian, flashing a crack of a smile in his direction.

Wake up, 'andsome... Always sleepin' when ye be wanted... Tsh...

    "Off with ye!"

Valerian, now his present state of manhood, became startled from the dream with his rapier unsheathed in his hand as he rised. Without much hesitation, he warily scanned the ground before him securing what sanity he had left, "Another morrow... bloody might as well be..." he muttered to himself, sheathing his rapier. Feeling a pain at his gut, he lifted his once elegantly woven shirt ever so slightly from his stomach to reveal a deep scar, seeping blood over the wounded flesh. He tightened his hand, furrowing a brow, and settled his other hand over the wound.

In the land of Sundren, Valerian stood out like a bloodied sore thumb. Why and how he had come to such a place, he could not concieve of. He tracked what trails he could off the beaches to eventually find himself at a peculiar looking port."What have I gotten meself 'nto now..."

Wherever he was, he casually went about sharpening his rugged attire before his eyes caught the nearest familiar building in sight, "A tavern 'lo 'n' behold. Now there be a settlin' sight." He cracked his uncanny roguish grin as he contently walked to it's heralded entrance for the night.
