  • Rat and His Pet Rat

"It's not how your life turned out that's important, but the story as to how it got there." Perdo Flintnose, Hand of Misadventure.

"Rat, what have you done?" Dillian Hillsunder asked himself while sweat ran down his invisible face. He tried, desperately, to control his breathing. He could see the guard looking around for him. He had obviously ran into this tiny alley which, of course, had a dead end, and now she knew that he had to get through her to get out.

"Brandaborris better really like this one." Dillian continued to think to himself, "If I survive long enough."

He had only been with the trade company a few weeks. The Underdark being dangerous, was not a mystery to anyone so when Dillian had offered to work as a healer for the group they had readily accepted, but most people don't really know about halfling religion so no one knew that priests of Brandobaris, on top of a love of adventure, are all thieves, and what more fitting offering then the House Seal of the head house Drow.

Dillian watched the dark-elf stare down the alley. He knew his invisibility would soon fade and then he would probably be dead. He figured his only chance would be to distract her and run as fast as he could. He closed his eyes and took a quiet deep breath to calm himself. He yanked a cord out of his bag.

He stood, thankfully still invisible, and ran at the drow. As he approached his invisibility faded and he appeared into view. Dillian threw his bag at the drow's face. He wasn't surprised when she caught it not was he surprised when she took a moment to gloat about how she was better then him. However, he was surprised at how far into the air she flew when he bag exploded.

Dillian ran as fast as his tiny legs would carry him. He knew he wasn't ever going to come back down to the Underdark, but he also knew the time had come to try the open road again as see what new fun he could have. As long as no one came looking for him he would be fine...

Dillian scratched his new cell mate under his chin. It had turned out that even running at full speed his little legs couldn't cover enough ground to leave the Underdark with his invisibility intact, and he now found himself stuck in a cell waiting to be sacrificed to some Spider goddess freezing in his skivvies. They had taken everything from him including his holy symbol, which he really wished he had right now.

He was glad he couldn't see himself in a mirror right now. He imagined he looked pretty skinny, and the drow had Tatoo'd his face all funny. His diet had been virtually nothing except for a few strange mushrooms. The parts of him he could see looked pretty dirty.

He began to wonder if they were ever going to kill him. He had been starving to death there for a whole day now with virtually no interaction with anything except the rat that seemed to like him. The company that he worked for simply abandoned him, but then he had brought this on himself so he really didn't have much room to complain.

His thoughts wandered back to the few months he had spent with the trade company. the thought of adventure in the Underdark had inspired him to offer his abilities as a new priest. They took him on as a healer, but he clearly wasn't worth all this trouble.

As he sat with his rat an idea hit him. He had spent much of his down time learning various skills from the others in the company, to include a wizard they had hired. He had a bat familiar that had followed him around and Dillian wondered if he could bond like that with this rat.

"Well little guy...Lets see how good of a friend you are?"
