  • A soggy arrival

Lighting flashes briefly illuminated the pitch black sky. Thunder claps shook the very planks beneath his feet. Yet he remained on the deck of the ship, refusing to yield to the fierce winds or the stinging rains. Surely this was another test from his ancestors. If he was ever going to live up to their standards he could not go running from some wind and water.

Glancing around Rok noticed that besides the captain and a few crucial deckhands, all of the other passengers and crew of the vessel were below deck. Light was visible from the stairs leading below and occasionally he caught the smell of something cooking. It was enticing but Rok would not, could not, yield to such comforts or shelter. Rok stood on the deck facing what ever was thrown at him, casually watching the shoreline appear and disappear between waves half the size of the ship.

It was then that the deckhand at the bow of the ship suddenly called out a warning, something about rocks, but Rok wasn?t sure how he had anything to do with what the deckhand was going on about. After all, he was right there on deck, not off the port side. With a deafening crack and a shudder that threw all on deck off their feet, Rok decided that this was not a normal occurrence for a ship.

The hull shuddered for a moment and everything seemed to go silent for that instant. Then the cracking sound returned, twice as loud as before, and this time the deck seemed to tilt at an angle that even Rok knew wasn?t good. Clutching a rope line Rok looked around quickly and saw the rear half of the ship dropping away from him, a huge tear in the deck was just a few feet away. As the rear half of the ship sank with an alarming speed, the half that Rok clung to just bobbed in the water for a moment before rolling on it?s side and pitching Rok into the sea. When he surfaced he saw the front half of the ship had become engulfed in flames, burning as it sunk into the ocean. A great amount of debris floated near Rok and he grabbed a large barrel to use as a floatation aid. With a feeling of uselessness Rok could only watch the rest of the ship sink. The waves began to carry him where they would, and eventually the waves deposited him on a rocky shoreline.

Gathering himself up, Rok surveyed the shore. He saw a number of crates and other wreckage, a body here and there, but nothing that seemed alive. Nodding firmly he set about to scavenge what he could from the debris. He had survived another test from his ancestors. For that he felt a swell of pride, for the lost companions he had aboard the boat he felt a touch of jealousy. Surely some of them had gone on to their great halls to drink with their ancestors. Rok knew he would have to prove himself even more before he would be granted such an honor. With that thought in mind he set out to find a town and explore this new land, and continue to prove his worth.
There is no, more moving, religious experience than cheating a cheater.
