  • The Language of Stone

James finished off the last of his grilled salmon and mopped up the juices with a slice of mushroom, popping it in his mouth as he leaned back to watch his fellows around the table. The Skullcleavers seemed to have accepted his presence in the Bunker without incident; a few grudgingly at first in respect of Angus' authority all those months ago, but more often of late on the craftsman's own merits. Still, there were some things missing.
The far side of the table burst into hearty laughter.
James watched them for a moment, curiously.
"I'm rather certain I missed something," came his analysis, "Either context or understanding; probably both." He pulled out a notebook, partially filled with a list of Dwarven runes, phrases, and words, flipping through, running his finger down the pages in an effort to discern the cause of the disturbance. "You know, by now I really aught to have memorized more of these than I have. Should really get around to it some day."
With a burst of enthusiasm, the gondsman turned his quartz goggles to his companions. ". . .And no time like the present. Anyone happen to have a few free evenings?"

The Gondar gives out a chuckle.
"Thats not particularly useful, Master Ironforge." comes the mirthful reply. "I could have brought baked rabbit, but I'm uncertain how appreciated sulfur is as a seasoning."
His attention returns to the phrase-book. "Unless I happened to the the focus of the joke, of course. Not that I mind, but I'd appreciate being able to play along even so. Perhaps starting with flashcards. I wonder where I left my ink."

Translation notebook, Interactions with Dryn Stonewhisper, part 3:

Master Stonewhisper dropped a pair of parting phrases after out meeting, in similar tone before departing with a sly grin. The second was understood, but the first was of particularly harsh nature to the palate, as I have come to expect of his natural tongue.
Pronunciation was similar to as follows:
        Thkur-rah ka-ar our Dra-zlath.
: with a non-insignificant pause between the third and fourth words.
His second line, of similar measure, weight, and pacing was:
        Stone keep you, James.
Presuming a similar grammatical style, this implies that a basic division may be applied to break the statement into a pair of phrases:
        Thukurrah kaar our :and: Drazlath.
Based on such a small sampling, it is difficult to verify the word placement within the phrase, but would be safe to induce that:
Thukurrah kaar our :and: Stone keep you :are syntactically equivilent.
Similarly, a correlation between James and Drazlath may also be effected, resulting in a translation sufficient to determine when a reference is made to or about my person; presuming that the Wurest Clan maintains their noteworthy habit of using first-names, a reasonable conclusion as traditionally the second name for a Delver seems to refer to their clan, which would likely be confusing within a particular hold.
