Kavos strolled along the road, his steps graceful and supremely confident, as if he were untouchable. The handsome young half-elf continued for a long time as the sun rose, as the first pinkish rays of light sprung from the horizon. He watched as it brightened further, reflecting off the morning dew, causing the fields around him to sparkle with an almost magical glow. A scene completely lost as his mind wandered aimlessly, almost to pass his destination.

He had been sitting in the Corps de Grace Headquarters, reading, as the calls began. An anonymous tipster had alerted the men of a grizzly scene in an outlying farmhouse. Naturally the ambitious man had made for the cottage, and arrived fashionably late.

As he neared the cottage, two young men rushed out, both making short dashes before relieving their bodies of a hastened breakfast. Two more missing the beauty of a fine sunrise. Watching the men, he stopped short of the door to straighten himself before entering. The smell was thick as he crossed the threshold, the stink of blood, of the dead. A man and a woman seated around a set table, naked and mutilated. The plates were garnished with bits of their flesh, with goblets of their own blood before them.

Blood had found its way all over the room, as if they were swung about as they bled. Toyed with, then ripped apart, and partially devoured. Like they were killed by some vicious predator, some nameless creature that stalks the nightmares of children. Their bodies were posed with expressions of pure horror, staked to the chairs with simple knives, probably from their own kitchen..

Stepping in further, one of the more seasoned men waved him to an adjacent room, a small bedroom, probably to house the children the young couple undoubtedly had planned to raise. Dreams torn apart like the bodies that once fostered them. Inside was only more blood, the clothes of the woman sat shredded in the corner. The stench filled the young half-elf's head, intoxicating him with its foul smell. He let out a profound sigh, and catching his thoughts, uttered a simple curse at the carnage that was this house.

The voice rang out loud in the silence of the cottage, making the simple words sound like a bellowing shout, turning the two men in the small room. "Sir, what could do this..?" The young man looked around, his pale face covered in a fresh glean of sweat. "Son.. I ain't even going to venture a guess, but there must'a been more then one.." The older man looked around before he closed his eyes, trying to will the images away, images of the dismembered couple, and images of the complete mutilation of two innocent lives. Kavos wandered the scene for evidence, staying longer then most of the men dared, only to return to the headquarters with more questions then answers, and news of yet another missing person, for an already beleaguered Directuer Tery Mard....

Kavos paced the dim-lit room, his eyes easily adjusting to the minimal light. The room was rather small, and poorly decorated. Worn, and faded, animal skin accounted for a bulk of the decorations. A dirty, and plain, rug centered the ugly room. The floors groaned in protest as he continued to pace, twirling a dark feather between his fingers. Time passed slowly as he re-constructed the events in his mind, his bare hand tracing along the lines of blood. The bodies were long gone, but the smell lingered, the putrid smell of the dead, and the slightly metalic smell of blood. As he continued to move about the small farmhouse he began to think more of the Victims....

"Were you happy?" He spoke to the shadows, looking at the table where the bodies were arranged. He imagined their eviscerated corpses staring back at him, their blank gaze giving way to a macabre visage of life. "You had nothing.. Clearly." He reasoned to the shadows, and the imagined couple. "I just want to know why.." He turns away, his hand finding his temple, issuing a heavy sigh. "Why can't I be happy!? What makes you better then me?" He growls, turning on the couple, only to stare into emptiness. He kicks at the closest object, overturning the small makeshift table, breaking off one of its legs. With a a deep breath, he slides the broken table out of his way, fighting the urge to burn the wretched place. To cleanse it of its memories, of the stench, and the uncomfortable weight of it. How did this place effect him so much.. Why was he so repulsed, not by the scene, but by the property itself, by everything it represented...

Without thinking, his feet began to move, and he slipped into the cool night air, but he did not notice. His mind still clung to its thoughts, a myriad of dark feelings and stinging questions, swirling about in his mind like a maelstrom. Before he fully tore his consciousness from its battles, he began to feel the throbbing of his feet, and the wet spray on his face.. He opened his eyes and found himself on an outcropping over the ocean.. The frigid waters spraying with each breaking wave. In the darkness, it seemed an ocean of shadows and wraiths, all swirling and screaming, ready to dig their icy fingers into his flesh, and bring them into the depths..

The hypnotic waves were drawing him in, the beckoning of the darkness swirling before him, the distant call to plunge into the darkness, and let himself break against the jagged rocks. The thoughts continued to pull, and without realizing he found himself on all fours, crawling out over the edge, bringing himself closer to the swirling black nothingness...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Light, near blinding, stung his eyes. Dazed he felt around himself, and for many moments his sluggish mind could not understand. A shiver ran down his body, he was cold. It was something, and his mind held onto it, a tangible feeling while everything else seemed distant, and drowned in the light.. Images began to form, as his eyes began to see. Something towered over him, the light showing through it in a dazzling image of shifting light.. It came further into focus, as his mind started to climb out of the depths, holding onto all the feelings it could find. He was wet, and he could feel the wind on his face, the grass tickled at his skin..

In a blinding revelation, his mind fully awakened, and he saw. He lay beneath a large tree, its leaves thin enough to allow the morning sun to shine through brilliantly. Around it was a small field, surrounded by dotting copses of tall trees, open land, and on one side the shimmering waters of the sea. It was all so alien, and strange. The last thing he could remember was the Darkness. With effort, he drew himself to his feet. His mind crawled behind him, aware more of the maelstrom within, then the surroundings..

It was a long trek, it was near mid-day before he saw signs of life, of any kind of settlement.. His mind felt encumbered with the barrage of thoughts, of what had happened, of everything.. He continued to wander, and the sky had been swallowed in darkness again before his aching feet found Sestra, before his mind found troubled rest, and more dreams of darkness....

The Darkness swirled, like a hurricane of putrid smoke, around him. The filth stung at his eyes, clogged his nose, and forced its way down his throat. He choked on the cloud, dropping him to his knees, as the voice spoke. "You've come far, but your wake is tiny!" The voice hissed in laughter, mocking the prone Warlock. The words weighed on Kavos' chest like the weight of a boulder, the mere presence of his benefactor, pact-holder, was almost more then he could bear.

"I--I've--" Kavos started, the cloud of filth filling his mouth, choking the words from him."No, no, child. Do not speak." Came the hissing laughter again. "Listen." It continued. The voice, like the rush of wind, and the rumbling of distant thunder, it seemed to come from everywhere, as if it were the swirling darkness itself. "You will go back to your pitiful plane, and with it I will send you a gift." The hissing laughter increases, the sound becoming so loud it stings at Kavos' ears. "The gift of knowing. You will know what to do, and you will do it." The voice raised further, the pressure rising in Kavos' skull, threatening to crush it, drowning out his screams.

The ground dropped out from beneath him. The world spun, and contorted, all the while he could feel and unseen force pulling him. It felt as if his body was being ripped apart, as if his skin would simply tear free of his frame. It all stopped, so suddenly. He wretched, curled up in the fetal position, for many minutes. He opened his eyes, seeing a dark lit path, small bushes dotted the sides, While a cliff overshadowed from the right. He laid on the path, panting, still smelling and tasting the filth, and everything went black.....
