    Moderated Character Submission Biography

    NWN2 Multiplayer/Gamespy Login Name: Delexos

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Character Name: Ignus Pyre

    Race: Fire Genasi

    Base Class: Warlock

    Alignment: Neutral Evil

    Deity: Kossuth

    Age: 30

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Description:

Before Ignus has even been seen his presence is known, the slight scent of smouldering embers travels around with him making stealth something of an impossible task (unless other sources of burning are present in an area). Physically well toned and muscular Ignus walks with a self confident air of one who considers himself a race apart, physically and emotionally superior (whether or not this actually is the reality). Emotions are always something of a volatile mixture with any Fire Genasi, and Ignus is no exception prone to both fits of violent rage and moments of intense creative passion, a fact that is often mimicked by his fiery mane, during moments of fatigue and weariness Ignus' hair splutters and fades as though his very soul were burning out, conversely in the heat of battle his hair will flare and spark with untapped fury.

He stands approximately 5' 9" tall and enjoys his natural ability to draw attention to himself believing that any glances cast his way are a testament to the majesty of the great genies that played some role in his conception.

He is a worshipper of Kossuth, though he is at this moment not an active participant of the 'church'. Ignus finds that Kossuth exemplifies the destructive nature of his own fiery character, but he knows little more than basic information about the ways of Kossuth at the outset of character creation.

    ------------------------------------------------------
    History:

Originally it is believed that Ignus hails from the sweltering humidity of the Chultean jungles, though he has remained guarded and has neither confirmed nor denied this fact. The truth to the matter, however, is that he did indeed dwell within the, almost alien, jungles of Chult for that is where he was eventually caught and caged by Rundeen traders in his early twenties. For a self absorbed egocentric Ignus does not seem to enjoy talking about his past, the reminders of those turbulent times appear to be something the Genasi would rather see burnt to a crisp.

The truth is that Ignus spent most of his younger days growing and learning within a small community of Fire Genasi based around the southern slopes of the 'Peaks of Flame'. Here the tribe had established itself upon a plateau of hardened magma which, due to the close proximity to the mighty peaks of flame, suffused the magma with a constant warmth that the tribe found naturally agreeable. Around the base of the plateau the tribe constructed rudimentary dwellings for their human consorts, after all the tribe could never flourish without increased breeding stock, a small community of humans was gathered together, the primitive, superstitious peoples of Chult were all too easily swayed by the exotic appearance of fire Genasi and the added protection that the Pyre tribes warriors could offer. The humans deified the fire Genasi and through them worshipped Kossuth, offspring born of fire Genasi and human that displayed traits of Genie lineage were greatly celebrated and were raised above the human community, living life and learning the tribes ways atop the warmed mesa.

Encouraged by both the isolated location and the very nature of the Genasi, the tribe were led to develop ways so that the histories and teachings of the community might be passed down through the generations. This became a combined system of rote learning, tribal scarring and tribal dance, with tales of past heroes and ancient myths being re-enacted by the community elders using their innate abilities to control flame to act out great moments from the tribal history round the communal fire pit.

Few outsiders know much of the histories of Chult, but for those that seek the wisdom it is said that the peaks of flame sit atop a gigantic pair of Iron doors that lead to the underworld, it is claimed that when the doom of the world approaches, Dendar the Night Serpent (a terrible monster that feeds on the unremembered nightmares of all creatures) will break down the doors and escape into Toril, whether or not this is actually true is a matter for both time and debate, however with the closing days of the destruction of the efreeti empire in Calimshan a group of Genies escaped into the jungles of Chult where they learned of the prophesy of Dendar, they convinced themselves that such a mighty beast might be useful to their continued survival and so it was that the first generation of the Pyre tribe established the foundations of the village, the original Pyre genies began cultivating their human breeding stock and began raising their offspring with the false belief that Dendar was in actual fact a manifestation of their deity Kossuth.

Ignus was born many generations later, a celebrated arrival and one of a pair of twins, of the two Ignus clearly showed signs of his noble heritage, he was elevated beyond the boundaries of the simple human settlement and began his new life in the care of other fire Genasi. His twin brother, however, showed every sign that he was a simple human child and before either of the two could ever comprehend the existence of the other they were separated, to live very different lives and very different stories.

The young fire Genasi grew atop the black mesa, his days spent beneath the sun, from his vantage point the mighty jungles of Chult spread out before him, at his back the ever magnificent peaks of flame spewing forth angry, billowing, clouds of smoke and ash, “Our lord Kossuth once more makes a mockery of of the air lord, look how willingly the air lord accepts the impure remains of Kossuth's purification!” was a comment commonly heard during such times of increased volcanic activity, the tribal elders taking great pleasure in the superiority of the fire race.

By the age of seven Ignus began to shows signs of trouble, he would frequently awaken at night screaming, brutal and sinister nightmares assailing his slumbering thoughts, horrors so vivid that he began to believe the waking world itself was nothing more than a mere construct of his imagination, designed to grant him a moments respite from the dangers in the darkness. Try as they might the tribal elders could not placate the young fire Genasi, and it seemed that for some reason their prayers and sacrifices to the manifestation of Kossuth deep within the peaks of flame did nothing to cure the young Ignus, in fact his nightmares seemed to only grow worse.

No more than a year had passed since the nightmares had truly begun to eat away at Ignus' dreams, for fear that word of his troubled mind might spread to the human breeding community and therefore lessen their carefully cultivated image as perfect beings, the fire Genasi elders carved a deep pit into the magma rock as far from the settlement as possible, into which a terrified Ignus was placed, his screams reverberating from the dark igneous rock walls, the screams became howls of anguish, slowly the howls choked away, his lungs raw, finally the only sound to emerge was a weak muffled weeping.

    Time dragged on.
Trapped by his own heritage the young fire Genasi grew a solitary life in the pit, fed and watered by the tribe that considered his birth to be too precious a thing to waste, but his affliction too far gone to be allowed to walk freely.

    The nightmares continued unabated.

With no possible way to focus his mind outward to the world around him, a world that had now, for all intent and purpose, abandoned him; Ignus turned his mind inwards seeking some way to control the nightmares, to suppress them. It was during one of his internal battles that he finally heard the voice of 'Kossuth', or rather a voice that proclaimed itself to be Kossuth, the very manifestation of the tribal god that lived deep within the volcano of the flame peaks.

The voice, masquerading as Kossuth whispered sweet promises to the fire Genasi, soothing the nightmares and taking away the pain. Ignus was only too happy to listen. You see Ignus could escape, the voice told him, all it required was an agreement, an understanding, a pact if you will.

The young fire Genasi swore that day to aid the voice.

With the aid of the voice the nightmares plaguing Ignus had receded, the silence from the pit during the dark hours a welcome respite for the rest of the fire Genasi community. Eventually, and after much discussion, it was decided to allow Ignus to ascend from the pit and rejoin the rest of his peers, and emerge Ignus did.

Though physically weaker and less hardy that other Genasi of his age, a fact directly related to the life he had endured through the previous years consumed by nightmares within the pit, Ignus had emerged with a sharper mind, his pact with the voice of the volcano had granted him unnatural powers, what he lacked in physical strength he made up for with an unnatural dexterity and a silver tongue that seemed to sway those with whom he would choose to converse.

By the age of sixteen Ignus was ready to perform the rite of purification, a rite which involved the ritual scarring of his body and a pilgrimage to the very foot of the peaks of flame, so that the tribal histories might never be forgotten.

And so it was that Ignus, half naked, his torso burning with the fire branded scars of his tribe,
finally left the plateau and set forth to seek the base of the volcano, that he might become a man.

There is yet another ancient tale of the disease ridden jungles that very few know of and even less speak. It concerns a beast so terrible that none have ever survived a confrontation with it. It is a beast that is known as Uluu Thalongh, a name whose meaning died out with the tribe that bestowed it long ago. It is said that Uluu is a huge, ancient, and malevolent flesh eating beast that can never die and that can deceive even the most weary with its debased trickery, Uluu was, all things considered, the very finest of tools possessed by Dendar.

In the darkness of night, Selune obscured behind thick bands of cloud did Uluu find its way to the boarders of the Fire Genasi community, the only sign of its approach were the strange tuneless piping sounds that floated out from the dense jungle foliage. The community were unprepared, after all they had only rumours, legends and hearsay to warn them of their imminent doom. All slept soundly in their beds, men and women, the elderly and the young, all rested contentedly, all save Ignus who was at that very moment knelt in prayer at the base of the massive volcano, thanking the voice for delivering him from a cursed fate, trapped deep within a pit of shame. The voice did not answer his prayers, for its attentions were elsewhere, as it willed its insidious tool into place.

The first physical signs were the last things the tribal sentries saw, all around them trees and plants began to 'bulge', the swellings spreading quickly to branches from which they burst forth as huge jaws at the end of tentacles- eyeless jaws that could see their prey perfectly, snapping and tearing until all creatures within the area were torn asunder.

Nothing survived the appearance of the Uluu; birds, rodents, even all the insects within the area were purged, leaving behind nothing more than empty husks and torn limbs, devoid of flesh and blood, the first to fall were the breeding stock, the human community that surrounded the base of the plateau, .

It was three days later that Ignus returned to the community to find the devastation, he knew nothing of what had happened, no tracks were there to follow, no sign of struggle or combat. Nothing in the histories had spoken of enemies that could drain the very life from a body, he beseeched the voice for answers, calling to Kossuth to reveal the identity of those that had wiped his tribe from existence.

With no other recourse save for that of vengeance he set out into the jungle once more, determined to find some sign of what fate had befallen his kin. This however was not to be so, days became weeks, weeks turned into months, no matter what route Ignus followed he could find no trace nor hint of what had befallen his home, and desperation singed its way into his soul as he travelled far from the usual tribal hunting grounds and deeper into the unknown dangers of his savage homeland.

Eventually Ignus found himself for the first time facing a vast expanse of water, having made his way deeper and deeper south until coming out along the wild coast. It was here, standing upon a precipice he was spotted, fiery hair blowing in the sea breeze, by a party of rundeen traders and brigands, the shock of coming face to face with such a huge quantity of water, his elemental opposite, allowed the Rundeen to capture and bind the young Fire Genasi with little resistance, he was gagged and bound tightly and taken aboard a sleek trading vessel destined for the far northern reaches with spices and exotic fruits purchased from the port town of Nyanzaru.

The journey across the open oceans of the world were the most harrowing experience Ignus had ever believed imaginable, each passing moment felt like an eternity trapped aboard floating driftwood where even the slightest outburst might cause the entire vessel to set ablaze, this fact alone kept him in check and he became deathly ill as a result of his captivity.

It took many months for the ship to reach the north lands, finally arriving at the hub of trade and activity along the sword coast. It was in the docks of Waterdeep the now malnourished, sick and deathly weakened Ignus was sold as an oddity to a mage of the school of evocation. This mage helped rekindle the Fire Genasi's inner fire to better study his new slave, and over time gleaned a great deal of information about fire Genasi physiology by studying Ignus. It was not Ignus' desire to be a slave however, memories of his imprisonment within the pit haunted his waking moments and it seemed a life time since he had walked as a free creature in the vast open lands of Chult, seeking those responsible for the death of his tribe. However the journey aboard the ship had sealed his fate, he knew he would not survive another trip upon the open waves, confined once more and unable to blaze freely, and no matter how much he longed to return to his jungle he knew he would never see his homeland again.

The Waterdeep militia believed that it was nothing more than an unfortunate accident when the personal quarters belonging to the evocation mage caught fire and exploded, 'an experiment gone awry' they called it, it was all Ignus needed to get away and try to find somewhere safe, somewhere he could carve out his own sanctuary where he might once more try and pass down the teachings of his tribe, for who would be left to await the true awakening of the manifestation of Kossuth beneath the peaks of flame if Ignus were to fall now?

And so Ignus travelled, searching with that same desperation within him, hoping to find some signs of others like him. he travelled northwards, ever northwards, the climate becoming cooler and more difficult to bare, but always he marched with head held high. He was a noble breed, born of the majesty of fire and he would not show any further weakness in the face of the lesser races. He had heard rumour of fiery devils abroad in the lands of Toril and sought to follow any such leads that might enable him to find his kin.

By the time Ignus reached the mighty gates of the Sunderer he had reached the age of thirty, he had found none of his blood the rumours had insisted that unnatural beasts and fiery creatures could be found within the lands of Sundren.

Ignus had found adapting to this inhospitable climate difficult, thankfully he had learned of metal armour two years previously which had quite literally been a life saver, his own natural body heat becoming absorbed and maintained by the metal he covered himself in soon became his only means to survive the bitter winds and alien snows of the north.

There was power to be gained in the chaotic lands of Sundren, the voice in the volcano told him so, power that would enable him to dominate his own nightmares at last, and powers that would make manifest the will of the voice within the mountain.

    Ignus Pyre had arrived.

Not a problem Mr. Machiavelli, it would be difficult for the community to read my Roleplayer of the month submission bio in the hidden Character Request forum

        **To the community in general**

As per DM_Doubtful's suggestion in the "About this RpotM" thread, I hereby submit, hopefully for your enjoyment, a character biography that I would like to have considered for roleplayer of the month. I figured that someone had to get the ball rolling so it might as well be me.

        Cheers folks.
