  • The life of Simon, the thoughts of a Rogue

You know that feeling? The one you get when you know you should stop, that what you're about to do is bad? I don't have that. I know what I want, and I am pretty good at getting it, no matter what. I guess if anyone reads this, they'll get it. Anyway, not sure why I started this, but maybe when I die, people will finally understand me. Someone else can know what goes on in my pretty little head..

Things were hard in Selgaunt, the streets don't give. You get strong, you get smart, or you get dead. I can't remember anything before that, the streets, not sure how I got there, don't care. I can say, its probably the best thing that ever happened to me, what would I be if it didn't? I would be soft, like all the marks. An ignorant and weak, worthless pile of shit. That's not me.

I ran in a crew, before the guild. A kid wont last long alone, you'll either starve, or step on someones toes. In Selgaunt, if you're not careful, you can find yourself taking a dirt nap real quick. There are people you can steal from, and there are those you don't. You see one of them comin' down you alley? Get wise, and run. Aint nothing good coming from that.

So I ran with a local guild. I set up marks, did some wet-work here and there. I was a small fish, not really my game. There wasn't anywhere to go, and I had plans, you know? So I got out, I wonder if they noticed yet. Maybe I will send a postcard. So now, I am on the road, where to? Well, I think I will just follow these idiots to where ever they're going. Hopefully they pull in to a couple decent cities on the way. A good tavern, and a clean whore would do me good. That's it for now I guess...

The passages are written in a curving and swooping font, the letters looking quite elegant for some rogue

So, I guess I should clear up a few things.. Talk about the past, right? Well, that might make it easier to understand what's coming. Yeah, I was a street kid, ran with a few others. We stole to eat, we stole whatever caught our eye really. It wasn't easy though, we didn't know the rules, not at first.. You see, the thugs that run the streets come in many shapes. Sometimes, you just don't know who you're messing with. You got Zhents, you got guilds, and you got a bunch of bloodthirsty mercs. Cut the wrong purse, and chances are you're dead.

It didn't take real long for us to figure this out, we saw a big guy, gaudy looking, pot belly. A real loud mouth, flashy and colorful. By the looks of him, just another no brains wanna-be merc. A little entourage of dirty nobodies. Wasn't even hard, getting the dopes purse. We got up a block on him, set out like beggar kids. I was the distraction. Another kid followed up behind him, and it went off without a hitch. A perfect snatch. We open up the purse to split the take, dumped it out in the alley, and man was it a take. Whole pile of platinum suns, a couple lesser gems, and one hell of a ruby.

We started the split, and came across something, then came the panic. One of the older kids looked like he just got punched in the gut, face went ghost white. He stood up and started cursing at the take. Turns out, he said, we just cut the purse of someone we want no beef with. We stuffed it all back in the purse, and we tried to think of a way out. See turned out, this was one of those connected men you just don't mess with. His name was Kheals, a real piece of work. By himself, maybe not too much to worry about, but his crew? They were as ruthless as it gets. Not a week earlier, they strung a guy up, by his toes, an beat him to death with some really nasty whips.

Word is, it took over an hour of three of them thrashin' to end it. Why? Because the guy was drunk, and ran into rainbow man in the streets, ruffled up his shirt. I guess we never gave it a thought, we hadn't ever seen this guy, heard of him and his crew, sure. Now in front of us, we had his crews sign. A token to show us just who we messed with...

It doesn't matter how it happened, but I made it out. There were 5 of us before that. I never saw two of them after . I guess they didn't make it, who knows. What I do know, is after that I played it safe. A few years later I was running distractions and messages for a guild. I wasn't a member, but it was food and a little security. Thats like a kings treasure for a kid like I was. I thought I had it made..

Now, go a few years past that. By now I was about sixteen, old enough to start making a name for myself, and sure as hell thats what I set out for. I took any job, I did what I needed to do. I guess for the guild, all I was good for was a front. I guess I was good, so why change it up. Lip-man, thats it. I did the talking, I set up meetings, made deals, but that wasn't enough. Sure at first I thought it was a stepping stone, I thought I was an up and comer. Thought I was gonna run the place someday, or be a legend on the streets. Thats not how it works.

I was a pawn, a nobody. I had the informants they wanted, I had a little swagger, I could talk a good game. To them, thats all I was worth. I am an ambitious man. I have many wants, and I will do anything to get them. When they said I wasn't worth their time, when they said I didn't have the skill? All I heard was a challenge. From there? Yeah, things aren't always perfect...
