  • Of Mortannis

    Name: Mortannis
    Real name: Saxon Cross
    Occupation: Wizard / Cleric

Life is a hard one that people often take the wrong way instantly regardless of their social standing in the world. We find rich people getting more and more wealthy as their initial standard of living continues to escalate. We see warriors always putting themselves into further and further peril in order to reach that next challenge. Personally I am trying to learn more and more of anything and everything I can. I was a terror of a kid as I grew up in the temple of Mystra learning about all the things she has done in the past and what she made for the universe to use. But it was never the point, she may have done a great many things in the past but what is she going to do next? what is she doing right now? They seemed to be so concerned with the facts of the past they lose sight of the here and now.

When you grow up with your parent figures of your life being the church of magic, you tend to pick up a few tricks. See, a great many people discount old magic as archaic and useless. I say otherwise as it is where magic seems to be going for the future. A simple example of this that everyone knows of is Lichdom. The ritual that takes place is old magic. When you throw down blood for a circle to summon a creature, when you read taro cards, when you create a magical circle, its all old magic, informal magic.

My first encounter with old magic was in the academy lower levels. A younger mage, as I was a teenager at the time, had thought to gain their power buy draining the life from weaker students. I did not know a great deal of magic at the time and this guy was using some fairly advanced stuff. I took notice it had somatic and verbal use during the ritual. See, all this great and powerful magic takes a great deal of concentration and motion. So when you walk up behind someone and give them a swift kick in between the legs from behind, it tends to interrupt their motions and their concentration. Pending on how hard you kick often their verbal usage to.

That ritual backfired brilliantly, the explosion was heard in the entire academy. I had stashed the book the kid had along with a starting bandage to the young mage he had been casting on. She looked like she got stuck half in and half out of her own body. I was reprimanded for killing a student but awarded due to the fact I prevented a lich being born, funny old world isn't it?

The book was mostly gibberish to me but the kid had written notes in a language I could understand. The lichdom was for a unique breed, and one of the little rituals seemed harmless enough, a soothsaying. The kid had used to to find the most opportune target so I figured, why not?

The fortune telling rocked me to my core, it was a vision granted.

Any who had been part of the ritual if interrupted would still be under the effects of the ritual. It was not a all or nothing thing, it was a build up.

    I had to alert someone....
