  • Speak (even whisper)

rp post for Iltz to teach Das Ju'ent the Drow language. I took a little creative liberties in my approach.

    -----

    speak(evenwhisper)

    1] sorshar
You teach her your surname, because the only meaning it has to you anymore is that the assassin that will eventually kill you will bear this name and

    2] iltzafein
the next word you teach her is your real name because it means Mage Killer and that's whats you are and you can't help but secretly revel in her suprised and frightened reaction and you vaguely wonder how it's come to this and you remember that the

    3] push
first thing you do is insult her and break her down, because by the (your) rules, you repay ignorant kindness with the opposite and you

    4] break
shatter the statutes by shutting her up, snaking your tongue in between her parted lips, and gods that was a stupid thing to do, stupidstupidstupid -

    5] choose
until you realize that it's you she's kissing, and that she's kissing you back, and that (gods forbid) you might even like it.

    6] full circle
(And you wonder, briefly, if she's worth being killed over, even though she's the reason you're still alive)

    7] continue
Neither of you is quite willing to break the embrace, willing to face reality and admit

    8] do not want
that what you're doing is unfeasible, that it's impossible, that a surfacer and a drow ever -

    9] enemy
and even though you've traded more insults than sweet nothings, that she is the enemy you have been trained to murder, can't stop yourself from wanting

    10] foreign
this, this uncharted territory of soft, untouched skin and emerald eyes and you

    11] epiphany
realize suddenlysuddenly that you want to do this, like this, because you don't what this feeling is, because

    12] friend
she's an irreplaceable friend as well as a lover, one that you never quite want to let go (though you'd rather hang yourself from the Tree in the Crossroads at this point than admit it).

    13] rose
(And you don't know when her lips became quite that exact shade of crimson, and it's really quite disconcerting that you can think of nothing else.)

    14] hallowed
You take her in your arms like a porcelain statue, fingers shaking

    15] hold
because it feels, honest to gods, like she'd break in your grasp, even though you know that she's tougher then you could ever be beneath those green clothes, and

    16] touch
And even though you're tempted to frame it, the place on your neck where her lips had been, you reason that they will be there again, and there is nothing transient enough left to frame.

    17] speak
And you realize, you never had to say a word.

    “Vendui… ve, vedaust?”

Das frowns a moment at the misspoken word then begins to write.

The sounds are familiar to me, each syllable rolling off my tongue. Honestly it seems like only a matter of memorization now… well, that and time. I’ve enjoyed the lessons. After all, the more I listen the less chance there is of stumbling into another perverted play on words.

Though, while I cherish the knowledge… the feeling of becoming more each day than I was before. I can’t help but notice. Each word, each sentence, I grasp their meaning immediately as he explains. But, there is more. There is a shadow on these words. Connotations from a past life, his years of living in the dark. I can see it in his eyes, hear it in his voice. A word cut off an instant too quickly or a phrase rushed to its conclusion. I begin to feel the lament of so many scholars. That, while I’ve learned so much… it only shows me how ignorant I truly am.

I hope that, in time, things can change. I was born in a world of light. Perhaps I can show him that warmth.
