  • Practice Makes Perfect..

Amywiewen exhaled in frustration, setting aside the parchment she held and letting herself fall backward onto the bed. For awhile Amy just stared upward at the ceiling of her room inside the Corsair Headquarters with a look of defeat, trying to piece together the muddled mess that were her thoughts. It took her a moment to snap out of her academic haze, and eventually her gaze moved toward her newly acquired spell book that was now stuffed with many scrolls. She wondered if it would upset Master Peridan that she had been unable to memorize even one of them by heart, and the thought forced a small exhausted sigh from her lips.

Slowly she sat up and moved herself to sit on the end of the bed, gently picking up the scroll she had been studying. As her eyes scanned the arcane words once again, her mind began to wander. So much had happened in what seemed like a relatively short period and she was having trouble filtering it all properly, often finding herself overwhelmed. Still, she tried to focus upon the wonderful new things she had seen, learned and the new friends she had met in this new land. Even as she basked in the warmth and joy of these memories, her thoughts were constantly rimmed with darkness that would try to seep through any cracks in her psyche.

Her dreams were getting worse, or at least by measure of what Aerick and Shuna had said, she believed them to be, and had begun to appear every night. The dreams themselves felt wonderful and horrifying at the same time, and it was difficult for her to reconcile those two emotions simultaneously. On top of this, being assaulted by what seemed to be a powerful vampire had left another weight upon her thoughts, and thus it was difficult for her to find the clarity of mind to study properly. Still, she had managed to make some progress, and this fact comforted her slightly. Perhaps Thaelis and Shuna were correct and becoming accustomed to the reverie would offer some respite, but she was still afraid do so so after what she had seen last time, at least on her own.

She shook her head lightly, driving away the distractions and once again intently focusing on the scroll in her hands. She began to recite the words slowly, careful to enunciate each of the arcane syllables clearly, as well as moving one hand from the scroll and beginning the deft hand motions the scroll instructed her to do. A flash of orange light appeared in her gloved palm and for a moment her eyes gleaned brightly with unexpected pride, but just as she felt hope the light grew out of control and a wave of hot energy blasted her onto her back, the bed offering a somewhat soft landing.

Amy opened her eyes and coughed, a little smoke coming out of her mouth and the smell of slightly singed hair filling her nostrils. She stared up at the ceiling with a blank expression.

This was going to be hard.
