  • Rose Thimblefoot

Rose gleefully sat on her travel trunk as she waited for the porters on the docks of Port Avanthyr. It was the first time she had been away from home, in fact the first time she had traveled anywhere and here she was, having just finished an exciting and exhilarating sea voyage to a new land. The harbour overwhelmed her senses, from the sights of the ships anchored in the bay, the sounds of gruff orders being barked to sailors or the various wares being hawked by merchants, to the smells of the salt and sea life in the air. Her sensory exploration was interrupted by a lean and tanned man standing in front of her.

“Ye called fer a porter mum?”

“Oh yes! Indeed!” said Rose as she hopped of her trunk and straightened her dress. “Miss Rose Thimblefoot at your service sir! I need to have this trunk moved to my room at the Mariner where I will be staying the night, before catching a coach to the city of Sundren tomorrow!”

The man looked passed the diminutive and cheery Hin with her outstretched hand in greeting to the trunk.

“Aye, This way mum.” He spoke, picking up the trunk, placing it squarely on his shoulder before turning and walking down the dock. Rose’s smile faded slightly and she retracted her hand before following the man and her trunk.

The Menacing Mariner, as it was called, was not far from where the whaler had dropped her off ashore. It was the only inn in town and was not what little Rose was expecting.

“Oh my, this place is dreary, though does seem full of life!” Rose’s comment did not elicit a response from the porter, to which her expression fell a little more.

As the pair approached the ramshackle two storey building, the sounds of drunken laughter and fighting could be heard over the feeble musical attempts of a bard. Rose reached for the wooden door to the establishment, but was stopped abruptly as a large hairy and tattooed arm reached out and roughly grabbed her.

“Why ‘ello der miss! Ain’t ye a pretty li’l un! Now ‘ow much does yer pleasurable company be costin’ the likes o’ me an’ my mates ‘ere?” Rose struggled under the man’s grip. She could smell the stink of whatever foul cuisine had been rotting away in his gullet mixed with bad rum.

“Get away from me you awful brute!” screamed Rose as she managed to wriggle her way from the man’s grasp at the cost of some of the finery of her dress. Quickly she sprinted after the porter and her trunk, leaving the filthy paws and drunken laughter of the brutes behind her. With as much courage and dignity as she could muster, Rose quickly secured the key to her room and hurried up to it, locking the door behind her.

With her belongings secured in her room and the door firmly locked, she quickly looked around. It was horrible! The bed was little more than a lice infested mattress on a wooden plank and rats ran freely among the crates, fishing nets and musty sails that were stored here. Even an old and cracked mirror hanging lopsided failed to bring any refinement to her current situation. Putting her head in her hands Rose began to cry deep heaving sobs until she was interrupted by a young woman’s voice.

“Don’t cry dear, it’s not that bad.” Quickly spinning to face the voice, Rose wiped the tears streaking down her cheeks.

“No? Why not? This place is horrible! It has rats, vermin, and I think someone left half a fishing boat in here! If I dare look for it, I’ll probably find a corpse rotting away too! It certainly would explain that smell though.” Said Rose as she took a careful look at the other woman.

She was a Hin about Rose’s height, but her hair was a fiercer coloured red and her face, though young, showed wrinkles and stress lines from a life much harder lived. However, it was the woman’s eyes that really drew Rose in. They were a piercing green, the kind of eyes that would look right to your soul and weigh it.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone else to be here, I thought I gave explicit instructions that I was to have a private room.” Rose said.

“Ah, well don’t be surprised dear, but the owner does like to double book the rooms. He’s not the most upstanding inn keeper you will meet, and I’m afraid most of the people in this town are not much better.”

“I see, I’m glad that I’m only staying the night then.” Rose managed a weak smile. “I’m Rose by the way.”

“A pleasure miss Rose, I’m Lilly.” Said the woman as she bowed slightly.

“I do apologise for the rough behaviour you received when you arrived. No one should be pawed at like a common strumpet, especially not one so finely dressed as yourself.” Said Lilly, causing Rose to blush slightly.

“Perhaps one day you may permit me to borrow such a fine dress? We rarely see quality of that calibre here, and I am sure to be thought of as a princess if I were to been seen in the streets. Quite the talk of the town I would imagine!”

“Oh you’re too kind Miss Lilly! I would be more than happy to lend you this dress, but that brute who accosted me ripped some of the finery and I would need to repair it first!”

“You’re right Miss Rose. Come, it’s getting dark and you must be tired. Put out that candle and we’ll find a warm place for you to sleep. Don’t worry, I’ll keep the rats off you, I’ll keep you safe Miss Rose.”

Rose woke from her troubled sleep with the ship’s bells in the harbour striking the first watch. Rubbing her eyes she looked around the room for Lilly, but she seemed to have left during the night. Getting out of bed Rose explored the room until she found her beautiful dress lying on her trunk. Though the finery of the dress had been repaired, the sleeves and frock were damp with sea water and smelled of the harbour’s salty air. Opening the chest Rose found another one of her beautiful dresses to wear before heading down to the common room for something to eat.

Climbing up onto the stool at the bar, Rose sensed a sombre mood in the room. Though there weren’t many people here, those that were kept to themselves speaking in hushed tones. Motioning for the inn keeper, Rose ordered breakfast and arranged for a porter to bring her trunk down. As the inn keeper turned to leave, rose quickly grabbed his arm.

“Mister Inn Keeper, Sir! Why such a sombre mood to the inn this morning?”

“Aye, tis a bad morn’ li’l Miss. Olaf, a regular customer o’ mine drowned last night. A big burly man ‘e was with big ‘airy tattooed arms. Seems ‘e wandered off the end o’ the pier and Umberlee embraced ‘im, she did.”

“Oh my! I’m sorry to here about your friend’s unfortunate accident!”

“Aye, thank ye li’l Miss. I’ll ‘ave a porter bring yer things down to the coach when yer ready.”

The days had passed without much incident, Rose’s Coach arrived at the city of Sundren and once again she was filled with wonder and awe at the massive stone walls, the tall buildings and the bustle of the streets.

Securing a job at Sunny Spindles as an apprentice seamstress, Rose was also able to rent the attic above the shop since she didn’t need much room and it allowed her to use the shop after hours to work on her own commissions. In fact Rose was becoming one of the regular faces around town as everyone grew to know to her cheery face and greeting as she skipped through the trade tier buying silk, cloth and other materials for Sunny Spindles.

As one evening began to draw to a close, Rose delightfully unpacked a crate that had recently arrived. It was full of brightly coloured costumes and theatrical masks that all needed a little alteration here or some embroidery there in preparation for an upcoming performance at the Talent and Balance. Taking a break, Rose was trying on a few of the costumes and masks, admiring herself in the full length mirror when she heard a familiar young woman’s voice.

“That one is quite pretty Rose, though I can’t say I’m a fan of the colour.”

Startled Rose quickly looked to the source of the voice. “Oh! Lilly? Is that you? Oh! Delightful it is! I haven’t seen you in some time! How have you been?” A little embarrassed, Rose realised she had on a garish mask of a wild boar. Quickly she pushed it up onto her forehead.

“I’ve been fine Miss Rose. I hope you don’t mind, but the door was open so I let myself in. I heard you were making quite a name for yourself as a seamstress, and here you are!” Lilly smiled at Rose’s embarrassment.

“Oh indeed Miss Lilly! I have been meeting so many new and delightful people! And the work here has been so rewarding!”

“I see. Perhaps you are exactly the person I need to speak to then, about fashioning a new backpack. But this is no ordinary backpack, but one made of durable leather to withstand the rigors of the road.” Lilly let out a sly smile as she tried on a feathered boa from the crate and admired herself in the mirror.

“Oh! Yes indeed Miss Lilly! A backpack should be easy if you have the leather.”

“Oh indeed I do my little Rose, but not here. Would you mind traveling with me tonight?” said Lilly as she pulled on the mask of a fearsome devil, letting another sly grin cross her lips as she again admired herself in the mirror.

“It is late Lilly, could you not just bring the leather by in the morning and I can have the traveler’s pack ready for you tomorrow?”

“No Rose.” Lilly sighed softly with a hint of disappointment as she dropped the mask and the boa back into the crate. “I cannot guarantee that the materials will still be available tomorrow, we must go tonight.”

“Oh, Ok Miss Lilly! Let me gather a few things then!” Rose quickly hurried to pack a small sack with a few things she would need for the trip, then locking the door to Sunny Spindles the pair traveled to the south and into the foothills.

“Miss Rose, would you like to learn a new language I picked up? Maybe a few phrases that may be useful to you in the future?”

“Oh yes indeed Miss Lilly! That would be delightful!”

“Ok then, try saying this: Murack dugh gildret!” Lilly spat out the guttural words.

“Oh dear! What was that, it doesn’t sound like any language I’ve heard in the city Miss Lilly!”

“No probably not, though it is the language spoken by the person we are to meet tonight. It’s a traditional greeting from his homeland.”

“Oh wow Miss Lilly! You mean I will get to meet someone new and learn a new language tonight too?”

“Indeed it seems so my little Rose, it seems so.” Said Lilly, letting a sly little grin cross her lips in the moonlight. “Now do be quiet Rose, I think we are close to our meeting place.”

And with that the pair traveled a little farther in silence, until a dim light from a low fire could be seen peeking over the top of the next hill. As the two Hin approached, the same guttural language that Lilly spoke could be heard in hushed tones.

“Ah yes my dear Rose. We are here. Now we don’t want to surprise my friend, he’s not too fond of visitors. Wait here while I go ahead to speak to him, but heed my signal and come forward when I say it’s safe to do so.” Whispered Lilly, to which Rose responded with a quick nod.

With the deft and silent movements of a cat, Lilly slipped over the ridge and walked right up behind the little creature without him knowing. In one motion Lilly drew a long bladed knife from under her cloak and plunged it into the creature’s ribs, ending his guttural mutterings as Rose watched aghast at what had just transpired. Lilly paused a moment to listen for any further movements, but all that could be heard was Rose’s panicked breathing and muffled shrieks as she stuffed her fists into her mouth. Cleaning the blade on the grass, Lilly motioned for Rose to join her at the prone creature.

“Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! Lilly, you…. Killed him!” Rose danced in horror as Lilly only shrugged then proceeded to roll the goblin onto its back.

“Wait, Lilly what are you doing to that creature?”

“it’s a goblin Rose, these creatures infest this whole area. They are small but they are dangerous, so be careful if you see one, and stay out of sight.” Said Lilly as she took her blade and began cutting the goblins thick hide “and my little Rose, I’m skinning it. I want its hide made into a backpack.”

Rose dropped her small sack and stood there in ghastly shock at Lilly’s words for a moment.

“You… want me to do… what?”

“Rose, do you know how durable a goblin’s hide is? I once saw an ogre beat a gnoll to death using a goblin! These are tough little creatures, and once the hide is properly cured and dyed, would make an excellent all weather backpack.”

“That’s horrible Lilly! Truly horrible! And I won’t do it!”

“No Rose, these are vermin, not people and yes you will do it. Wise up Rose, the world isn’t the nice cozy little burrow you grew up in. This… This is the world we live in. Now open that sack.” Said Lilly as she finished skinning the goblin and handed Rose its flayed hide.

“And besides, you need me to protect you from being eaten by this little monster’s friends.” Said Lilly as she gave a sly grin before pointing behind Rose. “Like that one there.”

Rose cautiously turned to see another of the little creatures, its lips peeled back displaying its needle like fangs, and its tiny little hands clutching a sharpened stick.

“Gulatch! Korgrath tasjuk! Tasjuk!” is screeched at Rose who stood there shaking in fear.

“Let me talk to him my little Rose. I will show you how much you need me Rose.” Spoke Lilly as she stepped forward to address the goblin, putting a reassuring hand on Rose’s shoulder as she did so.

“Murack dugh gildret!” Lilly said to the goblin. The words hung in the night air a moment as the creature cocked its head confused, then a sinister smile came across its face.

Rose didn’t have time to react as the goblin lunged forward with its crude spear at the same time that Lilly pushed Rose onto it. Pain exploded as Rose felt the rough wood slide into her abdomen. In a weak attempt to stop it she grasped the haft with both hands, but by then the spear had done its work and the wound was grievous.

“Why… why Lilly?” gasped Rose as tears streaked down her cheeks once more.

“Because you need me to keep you safe my dear little Rose.” Spoke Lilly as she gently brushed Rose’s hair from her face and kissed her lovingly on the forehead. “Say the word and I will make that evil little goblin go away, and things can go back to the way they were where you were happy. Just tell me to keep you safe, Rose.”

As Rose felt her blood flow over her hands, she began to struggle to formulate the words.

“Lilly… I… I want….” Gasped rose, but her sentence was cut short as two arrows in quick succession struck the goblin square in the chest, killing it before it hit the ground. Lilly spat out a string of curses at the intrusion before quickly disappearing into the darkness beyond the fire.

“Get away from her you filthy creature!” sang out another woman’s voice.

“Dear me my child. What were you doing out in these hills at night? It seems I have come along just in time!” A woman appeared above Rose, not Lilly, but an elf. She gently cradled Rose in her arms and applied bandages to stop the bleeding before picking her up and walking down the far side of the hill.

“Murack… dugh… gildret” Rose gasped as she lay in the woman’s arms

“Shhh my dear, don’t try and speak, save your strength.”

The guard leaned sleepily on his pike when the slender woman carrying what looked like a child appeared on the path.

“Sergeant!” Called the guard “Looks like we got another one!”

The camp broke into frenzied activity as miners and soldiers rushed to the woman’s aid, lifting the Hin from her arms and giving her medical attention. The Sergeant looked over the elf curiously a moment before speaking.

“Lucky for this one you were in the hills miss. I assume the goblins got to her?” The elf only nodded in response as she filled her water flask from the barrel in the camp and checked her arrows.

“Who should I say she owes her life to when she regains consciousness Miss?”

As the elf began to walk down the path leading into the hills, she paused a moment. “The name’s Aniel, Sergeant. I don’t know what it means, but the little one said the oddest thing to me when I found her. Maybe it means something to you? Murack… dugh… gildret?” the elf spat out the guttural words.

Curiously the Sergeant looked to the elf. “Well I’m not sure Miss, but it sounds goblin, and if I have the translation right, she said – Kill the bitch”

“I have much work to do in the hills tonight Sergeant, take care of her.” And with that the elf named Aniel disappeared back into the night.

It wasn’t long before the memory of that night in the hills faded from Rose’s thoughts. Though it did take some time before she was able to get out of bed, but it wasn’t long after that that she was skipping through the trade tier and once again greeting everyone with her cheery smile.

Rose was even given the opportunity to travel again as the summer was turning into fall and she was required to travel to a mountain city named Aquor to speak to a tailor there. As it turned out, his work was only seasonal and with winter approached he wanted to move all his extra stock to Sunny Spindles to be sold over the winter. Rose jumped at the chance to not only meet new people, but explore a new town.

That evening, Rose returned to her room in the Attic of Sunny Spindles with a new set of winter traveling clothes for her upcoming journey. As she began to set out her things for the journey, she caught her reflection in the mirror. Pausing a moment she traced the slight pink scar left on her abdomen from that night in the hills.

“It’s healed nicely.” Spoke a familiar voice behind her.

“I don’t want to talk to you Lilly, you tried to kill me.”

“No Rose, I was going to protect you, if it wasn’t for that elf bitch that interrupted us. She ruined everything.”

“You leave Miss Aniel out of this Lilly; she’s nice, not like you.”

Lilly sighed heavily behind Rose. “You’re right Rose, that was mean of me that night and I apologise. I just wanted to show you how dangerous the world out there is for you, I didn’t want you to get hurt.” Lilly put her hands on Rose’s shoulders and the two little Hin gazed at their reflections in the mirror.

“Anyway I heard you’re travelling to Aquor soon? It’s a fantastic little town, one of my favourites.”

“Oh! Have you been Miss Lilly? Is it splendid?” said Rose excitedly, quickly forgetting about the past.

“Indeed my little Rose, but there are dangers like any other place, you need to take care.”

“Oh….” Rose trailed off as she looked at her scar again.

“Rose, please cheer up. I came here to give you a present to celebrate your journey!”

“Oh a present for me Miss Lilly?”

“Indeed” said Lilly with a sly little grin as she held out a tough leather backpack, just Rose’s size.

Rose looked away from the backpack and its reflection in the mirror. “I don’t want it Miss Lilly, you made it from that creature you killed.”

“Oh don’t be like that Rose. This backpack is perfect for you, just your size and it has special pockets for all your needles, thread, dyes and other seamstress tools you’ll need for the journey.”

“I still don’t want it Lilly.”

“Fine.” Lilly conceded as she kicked the backpack underneath the bed.

“But we still have to discuss how dangerous the journey will be my little Rose.”

“I don’t want you to ruin this for me Lilly, not like you ruined my last trip.”

“Did you know the tailor in Aquor is an elf?”

            “Really Miss Lilly?”

“Indeed, at least eight hundred years old. Imagine the stories he has Rose?”

“Wow! He could teach me so much!”

“Indeed Rose, and I can teach you to speak elven, you can talk to him in his own language. You could even talk to your new friend, Aniel.”

“Oh! That would be delightful Miss Lilly!”

“Indeed, now it’s a long trip my little Rose. Pack your things and I will teach you a few elven phrases.” Lilly said as she slid the goblin hide backpack out from under the bed with her foot.

The iron shod wagon wheels chattered noisily as they skipped over the cobblestones of the Aquorian streets. Rose kept her gaze at her feet hoping, praying, that the Thayan guards wouldn’t notice her. All she had to do was walk with the caravan, that’s what Lilly said. The human merchants haven’t paid her much mind since they picked her up two days ago.

As the caravan master talked to the stern faced knights at the gate, Rose fiddled nervously with her pack straps. Lilly said the guards would look at her, the mages might even cast a spell on her, but Lilly said this would be ok, just blend in with the merchants. The iron gates swung open and the wagons began to move again. Rose passed the guards without so much as a second glance, she was almost inside the fortified compound and her heart began to beat faster. The caravan slowed to a halt in the courtyard and as the merchants began to unload their cargo Rose quietly slipped away, heading for the main door of the Thayan embassy.

Her heart was pounding outside of her chest now, but Lilly was right! It was easy to sneak in! Rose mounted the steps to the front door and took one last glance over her shoulder to make sure no one had noticed her slip away. Satisfied that she had made her get away, Rose took the final step as she turned toward the iron bound door and ran head long into the chest of a massive red furred gnoll.

Stumbling back a step or two, Rose kept her gaze on the ground, not wanting to look the beast in the eye. She could smell its unwashed fur; feel the heat of its breath as it sniffed at her, emitting a low and intimidating growl. Slick, ropey saliva dripped from the creatures canine fangs landing on the tip of Rose’s hat as she stood their like a frightened rabbit, paralyzed by the vicious hunter in front of her.

“RedFur! You insolent creature!” Yelled a bald man as he charged up the steps behind Rose. “How dare you speak to the merchants in this manner! I will have you whipped for your behaviour!”

The bald man looked over Rose a moment with an interrogating eye and opened his mouth as if to ask her something, but was interrupted by the caravan’s wagon master. After quickly dismissing the wagon master, the bald man turned his attention back to Rose, only to see the empty step.

Rose wandered the halls of the Thayan Embassy unobserved, absorbing all the new sights and sounds she could. Stopping at a large oak desk she stood on her tip toes and sharply rapped her knuckles on the desktop.

“Yes?” said a red robed man from behind the desk, barely looking up from the scroll he was reading.

“A quiet and… discrete room, sir.”

With an annoyed sigh, the red robed man put down his scroll and opened a large leather bound tome. Dipping a quill in an inkwell, the man paused and took a good look at Rose.

              “Duration of stay?”

              “My stay is open ended.”

The man made the appropriate notes in the book before reaching out toward Rose to take a small pouch of coins.

“Room two, at the top of the stairs and to the left.”

Rose followed the man’s directions, finding the room with ease. After entering and securing the door behind her, she looked over her spacious new home. The Thayans had spared little expense in outfitting the room with a grand bed for one as little as Rose, a sturdy trunk and dresser sat on the far wall next to a full length dressing mirror. Exotic paintings adorned the walls, giving the room an air of grandeur and rugs from thick furred beasts covered the floor, absorbing Rose’s footfalls. In the corner near the door sat a small table with drinking glasses and a decanter, seemingly waiting for the opportunity to entertain guests. The walls seemed sturdy enough as well, no sound could be heard from the adjacent room.

It took little effort for Rose to retrieve her trunk from the courtyard unseen, as the wagon master and his crew were still busy unloading their wares and tending to the horses. Having unpacked her belongings, Rose sat on a small stool in front of the dressing mirror diligently brushing her hair.

“I’m impressed, little Rose. You executed my instructions beyond my expectations” Spoke a familiar voice from across the room.

Pausing her grooming, Rose put the brush in her lap and shifted her focus in the mirror to Lilly as she crossed the room from behind.

“I did it Miss Lilly, but I didn’t like it. Don’t ask me to do something like this again.”

“But why? I’m very proud of you.” Lilly stood behind Rose with her hands on her shoulders, admiring the pair in the mirror.

“It felt dishonest, sneaking around like that; and I think one of the gnolls knew something was amiss. If it wasn’t for a mage I might not have slipped into the building. I should never have let you come along; I should have travelled with one of my friends”

“Don’t say that!” said Lilly as she tightened her grip on Rose’s shoulders.

“Ouch, stop that! You’re hurting me!” Rose struggled under Lilly’s strength.

“I’m sorry my little Rose, I just get jealous of your other friends. You never bring them around to meet me and I feel so… alone without you around.” She loosened her grip on Rose’s shoulders and picked up the hairbrush.

“Perhaps if you told me about your friends I wouldn’t be like this?” Lilly said as she began to gently brush Rose’s hair.

“Oh, ok. I’m sorry I didn’t know you felt that way.” Rose said a little ashamed.

Rose spoke at great length on the people she had met and travelled with over the last summer. The whole while Lilly diligently brushed Rose’s hair, hanging on every word with a faint grin on her lips.

Redfur sniffed the air again. He knew someone was here, he could feel it as the hairs on the back on the massive Gnoll’s neck stood on end. He continued to patrol the grounds of the Thayan Embassy sniffing the air as new snow crunched under his feet. Then he suddenly stopped as his ears began to twitch, he heard something. He moved down the flagstone path toward one of the gardener’s stone sheds, listening.

“One, two, three, five!” came the soft voice from around the corner, then the sound of scratching. Redfur licked his nose in order to pick up the creature’s sent better, his hot breath quickly condensing in the cool early morning hours.

“Seven, eight, nine, eleven!” came the little voice again from around the corner. Redfur cautiously grasped the edge of the building while putting his other hand on his battle axe. Slowly he peered around.

“Hello there mister!” said a small child playing hopscotch. She was dressed in urchin rags with a red cape and hood, that shielded her face from Redfur’s gaze. As she bent down to pick up the stone she was using as her marker, he noticed the child’s feet were bare on the snowy flagstone where she had drawn her hopscotch course in colourful chalk

“What are you doing here child, out in this cold?” said Redfur as he looked around to see if anyone would notice if he made an early morning snack of this waif.

“Playin!” was the simple reply as the child skipped towards him and held aloft her marker stone. “Do you want to play too?”

Redfur relaxed the grip on the axe at his belt and picked up the curious stone, which on closer inspection was a chunk of rough amethyst. His eyes focused on the raw gem for a moment and a slim smile broke across his lips. He looked down to the child to find that she now held a small dagger in her had. Her playful demeanour was gone, replaced by words that sent a chill down Redfur's spine as if Auril herself had just walked down it.

“Dear little Rose send her greetings beast.” Said the child as her dagger shot out landing a few quick but minor cuts to Redfur’s abdomen. His lips turned to a snarl as the child leapt back a few paces, revealing her true nature. Not a child at all but a small Hin.

“I will eat you for my breakfast little peck!” said Redfur as his hand return to the handle of his axe, the chunk of amethyst clattered to the ground. However, Redfur could not find the strength to lift his weapon and he now noticed his legs seemed rooted to the stone. With the strength and edurance sapped from his limbs, Redfur sunk to his knees and slowly toppled to one side, his eyes resting on that raw gem.

“Rose doesn’t like you beast. You were mean to her and I don’t like when people are mean to her. I protect her from people that want to hurt her like you.” The Hin said as she picked up the gem and placed it in her belt. Reaching back she drew a long slender knife from beneath her cloak.

“Can you can feel the poison working yet beast? It drains the strength from your limbs until you are as helpless as a baby, but it wears off quickly so we have to get to work.” The hin said as she moved the wicked looking knife in front of his paralysed face. He could only manage a weak growl even though the beast caged within tore at his every fibre.

“I’m afraid that the poison does nothing for your other senses, so you will feel everything I am about to do.” She spoke again as Redfur felt her her feet walking up his back. “But I must say you have very soft fur, and such a rich colour it is beast.”

The next morning Rose woke late in her new room at the Thayan Embassy. Lilly was gone, but on the table was a package wrapped in brown paper and tied carefully with string. She untied the string and took care to unfolded the wrapping revealing a beautiful winter coat and matching gloves trimmed with a rich red fur that smelled faintly of cinnamon. The note enclosed simply stated:

“Do enjoy your new room; it is paid through the winter as I suspect you will be staying a while. I have made this delightful winter coat and gloves for your stay here. The fur was the softest I could find, but it is warm.

                Dearest Lilly”
