  • Fruitfull Forest Fumbling

Ariel and Evan walk through the camp on their way to the Viridale side by side as they are wont to do. They talk casually, almost as if they can read one anothers minds, so much time they have spent together now. They pass by the guards on their way investigate some report of sick animals in the Viridale at the behest of the Keeper of the Glade.

Once through, they descend a hill to come to an intersection of a River where a bridge crosses. The river flows easily north to south but they are wary of it's water as they've been told that the sickness might be infecting the water, or even be coming from the water. They stop to get some bearing as they recall their instruction.

North they descide is where the Keeper and some other druids have said, near the river. As they set off, they come to the path that leads to the Druid Glade. They descide to head back to the intersection and contempllate their situation. Perhaps they've gone the wrong way, if the sick animals were already in the Glade, why send them looking?

Upon arriving, they descide that North is truly the way they must go so they head out across the bridge, but as they walk, it becomes appearant that the are getting further from the river. How could they be near a river if this way was north. They return to the intersection again, obviously they've made a mistake. Once back at the intersection, the surroundings seem much more familiar and they feel confident now they can navigate to the proper path.

Ariel looks around, feeling more secure and descides that up the hill is the right way but Evan stops her and says they must go north, so she points the way. Ariel nods and sets off in that direction, which actually is North. They set out happily walking side by side.

As they walk, they come to the edge of a cliff, as they've wandered off the main path somehow. Unable to continue for to do so would require scaling down the side, which they might do, but they have no rope. Stopping to determine the best plan, they try to make their way back to familiar territiory. They head back, finding the intersection once more.

At this point, they descide they must try in earnest to determine which way north actually is, for if they can't find it, they'll fail the Keepers task and that is not an option for them. Ariel reveals that when a child she learned the sun always rises in the west, and if they follow it they will eventually head north. The plan is adopted and they look for the sun, which is high in the sky. This is no good, it really seems as if over head, and how can one walk up? Quickly the plan is discarded.

Much discussion ensues and with a stroke of genius they descide that they should use a bit of divine wisdom and let Lliira tell them which is the right way. Evan closes her eyes so Ariel can spin her 3 times, they feel when she stops that has to be the exact and proper path. One four seven ten five and three, as Ariel stops her Evan seem to wobble a bit and collapses.

Ariel rushes to bend down, seemingly the touch of Lliira has over come Evan since she's breathing heavily and her face is a little greenish in tint, obvioulsy she needs comforting. Once a few words of concern pass between them Evan seems to recover, but alas they've not desciphered the direction yet.

A new plan must be devised and they quickly form a circle to meet their minds upon the task. Only after a few minutes of deliberation, do they realise it's really so simple. They both know that moss only grows on the east side of a tree trunk so they set off to the nearest tree which is nearby considering they are in a forest.

They examine the tree trunk thoroughly to find just which side the moss seems to be on. Bending down they look closely and do find moss on most of the trunk, but really it's mainly on one side. They didn't notice the scratch marks where some animal has clawed the moss free. Now they know exactly what to do.

Standing back from the tree Ariel starts to think outload "Now if this is east" She holds out her hand "And I face this way" she turns to the west "then we devide that degree of angle by 13" At this moment her face lights up in realisation. She heads off to the north for no real reason. Evan follows along happily, determined to help the sick animals in her magical way.

They walk for some distance and become tired and stop to catch their breath, still not coming any nearer the river than before. While standing they begin to talk which sometimes can last for hours , when they hear a strange sound comming from behind them. This they descide might be one of the sick animals. They set off back the way they've come to see.

Walking back a ways, they realise that there's no animal there and that they are just imagining the sounds. Feeling rather silly for being so jumpy out in the seemingly quiet woods they stop to recollect their surrounding. Upon doing this, they discover some footprints on the ground heading back down the hill. Which they descide must be from others in the woods searching as well. Perhaps they actually know the proper direction and since it's been such a long time they descide to follow the tracks.

They head back down the hill to the north following the tracks closely, stooping as they do so as not to lose the trail. They walk down the hill then turn and walk back up the hill, which seems a little odd but they trust the people who made the tracks know the proper path so they continue following. Coming to the top again, the trail turns as the follow.

Coming almost to the bottom of the hill and close to the river which they don't notice since they are following so closely, the foorprints turn again and head back south up the hill. This continues for some time and they descide that its really hard to find your way in the forest so they must follow these footprints or they'll get lost for sure. Back and forth up and down the hill they go.

A long time passes and now it's getting very dark, they can no longer even see the footprints. Evan is tired, Ariel is tired and they both feel a little defeated. Looking to each other for inspiration Evan finaly descides that they can navigate using the stars like sailors do. Ariel having spent a long time aboard sea vessels agrees. Evan, determined to find the way searches the night sky for a long while and finaly says "that way" which is to the west.

They're just about out of ideas now and figure why not, lets just go that way .. but it is too dark to see where they are going without walking off a cliff or stepping in a hole maybe injuring themselves. This they figure cannot happen for how can they save the animals if they themselves are hurt Sadly they descide that it's not to be, and settle down to rest, waiting for daybreak to continue their journey. No sense getting lost in the dark they intelligently descide.

((until the journey continues, I want to thank doubt for putting up with our antics, as this took hours to complete and his patence with the airheads was much appreciated))

Morning came and as they packed up their things a wild boar came sniffing around. Quickly Ariel dived on top of it and tried bringing it to the ground but the boar was stubborn and refused to accept defeat until a solid blow to the head made it collapse.

As Evananda looked for any signs of sickness she suddenly discovered how different animals and humans was and had great difficulty telling the symptoms apart but as she found none they tended its wounds and set out looking for another.

The next animal they found was killed by an elf girl before they could subdue it, they tried seeking the elf’s help but was bluntly told to find their own animals to kill before she ran away to find another to kill herself.

After pinning down and examining a couple more animals they finally find one that definitely had sings of sickness and so started carrying the sick wolf back to the grove as the requested specimen.

As they crossed the bridge a giant bore stopped munching on some dead guy and charged right at them. The fighting went on some time as Ariel could not fight as well carrying a sick wolf but the giant bore flumped to the floor dead without too much harm.

The giant bore showed some odd sings of disease but seeing the two of them could not carry such a large corps and they already had a sick wolf, besides they wanted a live animal for the druids to study. They carried on to the glade and told the Keeper about there work.

After listening about how they disturbed the animals he was un-impressed. The wolf only had a milled form of mange and he bluntly explained how good intentions dint always help if applied the wrong way, then banished them from the glade until they thought about what they did.
