  • Letters to the Dead

((The letters are written in a hand overflowing with enthusiasm and swirls. The I's are dotted with hearts and smiley faces and the T's and F's are crossed with what appear to be entirely too much embellishment. If any handwriting could be described as "girly" this would likely be a fine specimen. Any errors should be read as entirely the fault of the letter writer and not the author.))

    Dearest Mumsie and Popsicle,

I've had to start a new book of musings and observant observations to share with you. My old ones were badly soaked in a storm on the way back. I know you won't mind at all.

I know truly in my heart that even though you're gone and dead and buried in your modest little plot of earth that you're still somewhere looking out for your little girl. It's been two years since I received word of the fire that had to be so horrificable and how it burned down the shoe shop and everything but I've graduated from Shiv's Academy with passing grades and finally made my way back home to Sundren.

You know. . . it's a lot wetter than I remember it being but I have been gone for seven years now. At the first opportunity I'm going to visit those smelly druids and demand that some action be taken to dry things out a bit. I'll need a proper escort through their forest as I've heard dreadful things about murderous thugs with bows and arrows have been seen there.

Luckily my clothes made it back with me though the green dress that I bought before I left Waterdeep seems to have shrinkified a little. I'm not entirely sure that it doesn't show a little too much of my legs but the people here seem entirely not to take much notice of such things so I guess that wearing it won't seem to matter to too many people.

I did meet a few people today. I found a good hearted paladin who acted as my chaperon for a little while. Everyone seemed to think it quite quaint that I was looking for one. Maybe people here aren't as civilized as they are in Waterdeep. There was also a man of completely boorish behavior. His called himself Stanlee and he's a man of the most brutish and vile type of behavior. His words were completely harsh and sarcastical to me so I think that I'm just going to ignore him until he leaves me alone.

I also met a woman named Melissa who I think I could be friends with even though her skin is so pale as to be easily mistaken for something pale and not quite altogether healthy. I even offered to help her get some color into it so that she would just look pretty instead of the kind of scary pretty that some of those strange girls that put on that pale make up and dress all in black at Shiv's looked like. At least Melissa didn't dress all in black. I think that helping her will definitely help to make me a better person. And that's one thing that I'm exceedingly good at! Being great!

It's time for nighty nights now so I'll just stop writing until I have something important to say.

    Yours mostly truly and dearly,

    Malinda

    Dearest Mumsie and Popsicle,

Today I thought would be just like any other day but first I need to tell you what happened before today so that you don't think I'm shirking my letter writing! A cute little girl asked me for help to save her friend. He was being accosted by a man with a veritable army of undead things. I think they were zombies but I didn't do very well in that class at Shiv's.

I went with her to see what I could do but even as pretty as I am the men didn't listen to a word I had to say. They just started fighting and it was so horrible. I did find out that the little girl is much more than just a little girl though. She's a wizard of immense power and determination. She felled the leader of the zombies but he got up so I ran away back to the trading post. Luckily there was a man there who could help more.

I led him back to where the horrible man was at and left. Luckily all turned out well. I think they even killed what looked like a demon though I can't be sure. I did have a dress that got ruined by mud when something picked me up. I don't think I'll try to become a better person by helping people with things like that anymore.

But today was truly a blessing! I talked at some length with a woman named Lauan. She's a Knight of Thay and she said that people don't like her. It's strange that no one would take the time to get to know her like I'm going to. She said that she didn't have any friends so I've decided to be her friend to get things rolling. It's going to be a difficult chore to help her make some more but these are the things that try us. It might take some time, but I'm sure I can help her overcome her shyness.

    Yours mostly truly and dearly,

    Malinda

      Dearest Mumsie and Popsicle,

I must remember to drink Dragon's Breath in moderation.

My newest and dearest friend Lauan has told me some despicable things about a few wicked adventurers who infest this valley. I won't put their names here because I'm worried that this might someday fall into the wrong hands and even my life will be in danger. Suffice it to say that these individuals are legless snakes for the horrors that they've inflicted upon the poor women of this valley. I'm determined to do something about it but I'm not quite sure what or even how yet. I've purchased an intimidating carapace of leather armor for this purpose.

I should tell you a little bit about Lauan though. She has a beautifully tragic tale to tell and I'm sure that I've only scratched the surface in learning about the horrors she's endured. The poor thing has been torn asunder and put back together into what she is today. I've only ever seen her wearing her cumbersome armor or dressed much in the manner of a man in that she never wears dresses. She told me that she did wear dresses once upon a time. I'm sure she'd look quite lovely in one if I can only get her to put one on again.

She's very helpful in her way too. Yesterday, before she told me parts of her desperate past, she took me to a quiet spot to teach me ways to defend myself. Something . . . strange and frightening happened out there. I'm not sure what but it seemed to disturb her slightly and disturbed me even more.

She recommended that I seek out help at the University here in Sundren to figure it out. Truth be told, I'm tired of school and books. It's hard work wading through those old papers. She also said that her Enclave might be able to help but I'm unsure about trusting anyone there. It's where she gets her orders and I'm not sure that those orders are entirely healthy for her. They seem to cause her much angst. But she also mentioned an elf by the name of Caelryth who might be able to assist me as well. I think that's the first thing that I'll try. Maybe he'll be able to help me.

I think I'll stay inside today though. My head hurts. I'm not sure if it's because of the Dragon's Breath or Lauan's fist or both of them combined but my bed here at the Four Lanterns looks extremely comfortable.

        Dearest Mumsie and Popsicle,

I've been so remiss lately and sooooo bored. I've practically been living with the Helmites. Not that I'm going to be a priestess now or anything but my campaign against the Banites doesn't seem to be doing any bit of good. A couple of them have escaped the custody of the good Legion and they even let a member of the Veritas get out.

I was only a little girl when I left Sundren to go to school at Shiv's Academy in Waterdeep but I don't remember the Legion being so wholly incapable of keeping people in their prisons! I kind of wonder why people even bother trying to capture them if the Legion is going to let them go. I guess it's a good time to get arrested in Sundren. It's a good thing I'm poor right now but I do worry for the men of wealth who might be robbed when their thief, who might not even BE captured these days, could just walk out of the prison.

Something must be done. If I were more capable and if more people would care about the dangers that the Banites and the Veritas pose to our fair land it would be so much easier. I've been conducting interviews with adventurers and people around Sundren to determine if they're a threat. You'd be surprised at how many of the people have not a care in the world about the problem. When I ask which god people worship so many are willing to have suspicions cast about them that I sometimes wonder if we are being secretly ruled by Banites.

Like I wrote eariler, the prisons are incapable of holding them. One Banite named Syne has reportedly escaped twice in recent months! The streets are far from safe with her running about. She's a murderess. And the one who attacked me and left me for dead (his name is Nekros) got captured and escaped as well from what I've heard. New leadership in the Legion is called for but unless the nobles of Sundren unite and get over what I can only suppose is their fear of the Banites I don't believe that anything can be done.

I'd ask for an audience with the Exarch but I've not managed to catch the eye of any of the nobility and am still without a husband with the means to get my request recognized. It will be a chore, but I suppose I'll have to do it alone or with a select group of like minded citizens. As soon as I think up a suitable name I'll get started. Pamphlets and meetings and things need to be planned. It may take a small army to finally defeat them but I will do my best!

P.S. Oh! I almost forgot. Did you know that the Enclave in Aquor is bad?! I'd thought that Lauan would be a good friend, but it turns out that even Thay is turning a blind eye to the Banites. It almost makes Thay an enemy too!
