  • Anyone good with internet connections?

I made my wife a computer.

From day one the internet connection on it just worked. I connected it up to my modem and up popped the internet, super duper!

SHe takes it to her office and they configure it all to their network and stuff and now she has it back home again.

I can't get the blooming thing to connect to the internet at home anymore.

I'm not even sure where to start.

I assume you're using Windows XP on this computer? Is it regularly connected to the office and then somewhere else, IE home?

Since you're using a home modem, I assume your computers are using DHCP so everything is automatic, however it may be that her ethernet connection properties have something statically configured.

In the Control Panel under Network Connections there should be a local area connection, if there are multiple you will have to figure out which one is the one you are plugging the cable into. If you go to the properties of that connection and then go to the properties of the TCP/IP protocol there should be a bunch of numbers in some fields. There will be an option to define them manually or obtain automatically.

If you set them to obtain automatically, and reboot your computer (or you can right click on the connection after clicking Ok to the changes and click repair, which will flush out the old info, etc) then you should get it working.

However if this computer is brought frequently between the office and home, you may need to keep resetting the configuration.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I would seek to buy a dongle a little USB ethernet connection that stays at work and gets configured for that computer and then have them Reset the onboard nic to default settings.

That way both connections work...its what I do at work....eeep...I mean...Duh on switch me no know where that is...

Thanks that sounds about bang on correct!

The computer was in an office she was renting but it's home for good now so it's a case of just getting it back to normal and it will be fine.

There is two local area network connections so i'm gonne call up the building she was renting her office from and find out which one was theirs and switch it off. then reconfigure hers as was suggested.

Thanks for the advice. It is heavily appreciated.

Unlikely, it's a shame but my wife is a 'normal' person and doesn't enjoy this sort of thing.

P.S. Saulus, Many, many, many thanks. The problem is fixed and her computer has internet once again. This means I can get her off mine and use it to play more Sundren!

Saulus probably just saved you 2-3 hours on the phone with tech support.
