This server is definitely a learning experience and the best way to teach the new guys is by setting a good example. I'm sure that is how a lot of us have learned on this server.

Just keep up a good example and people will follow.
Yeah I can really relate to that. I had never RPed in my life before Sundren and while my spelling have gotten better I'm dyslectic and English is not my native language so I still have trouble keeping up with the rest of the players when it comes to typing. Anyone who have read my character description can get a picture of how poor my spelling was when I first started playing Sundren

The other thing I have noticed is several people that curse ooc WAY more than they should. I understand that when I crash on transition, or die because im doing something stupid, I do the same thing.

I don't however take the time to say //damnit... and so on. (becasue I cant.. but thats not the point).

There have even been some instances where there was more // talk that didnt have to do with anything. Just making comments and talking about whatever. Note that this was during a time when descisions needed to be made. We stood around long enough for a respawn, and consiquently (sp) I died... But I die a lot so thats ok.

          So... there you are.

All us noobs aren't that bad just give us some time to get used to the flow of things. Not all of us come to these servers with Rp experience. We come to try it out and see what it's all about and have a good time. And if our grammar and punctuation really ruins your day well all apologies it's something else us newbanites have to get used to as well.......... .........Bouche

If your new here, take this thread with a grain of salt. Sometimes our players need to blow off steam and they create threads like this. (It provides the staff with hours of humorous entertainment.)

I was wondering if it smiting was random or was planned out according to forum posts

Smiting is planned out by alignment. The closer you are to Lawful, the greater chances you have of being smitten! Also, the further you are from being Neutral is also included (stacking affect, of course, whether it be extreme evil or extreme good).

So if you're 100/100 or 100/0, then uh... Welcome to FoEN.

...Now that I have exposed their secrets, I'm getting the hell out of here! *yoink*

I get to watch lots of PCs develop but also lots of people develop as players. Fully understood Bouche.

Truly though, I've found even in the short time I've been here that the less likely that a person is to learn to RP here, the shorter their stay. The problem is usually self fixing, with that said we should all remember that if we put a little more effort into coaching a new RPer we might just get a really great player and new friend out of it.

This is untrue. I'm an equal opportunity smiter!

Well, I perfectly understand that new players need a chance to learn. Not just spelling and grammar, but RP etiquette and character design. There are much, much worse RP communities out there as far as grammar policing. I know, because I've been a member of some of those communities. Sundren used to be an application only server, but since it opened its doors, I really don't think it's taken a hit quality-wise.

I would like to suggest the use of a "learn to type" program if you can't keep up with the RP, though. Your grammar can be below average, but if you type fast, it can slide for a while. If everyone has to wait on you to respond, it can be downright painful.

As far as what Cade's saying, it really depends. Grinding every once in a while is fine. You can't have an IC reason for fighting 100% of the time. It's easier for some classes than others. But blind grinding, for hours on end, is a stupid way to spend your time. The best players RP as much or more than they fight. I know I've spent upwards of 2 hours just roleplaying, getting only those 30 exp ticks for a tangible reward. But it was fun, and extremely rewarding in terms of character development.

My suggestion to newbies is create a character biography first. It doesn't have to be a life story, just a basic guideline of your character's features, strengths, weaknesses, and personality. Maybe a hint of history and life goals. Include both mental and physical attributes (make sure they match your stats). You don't even have to post it on the wiki. But without a bio, you're pretty much driving blind.

Hahaha, I threw together Hano as soon as I got the client updated. I knew I wanted to be a Paladin, but only that. Random generated name, no story, TERRIBLE TERRIBLE build (Many people have laughed at it, including DMs)

However I pulled a lot of things out of my ass to create an interesting character. More flaws than strengths in the end, but I really love it. I came here to RP, not grind. My WoW days were spent grinding... I'm here to enjoy the ride.

If I was to give only one piece of advice to someone just starting out on Sundren, it would be this. Your class and race are nowhere near as important as who your character is, what motivates them, and how they react to the world. A character on Sundren can be anything at all that you want so be creative, I know of characters just off the top of my head that are former slaves, womanizing paladins, druids who don't speak common, incompetent rogues (which make me laugh alot more than the competent ones), Clerics who can barely spell their own names, and host of other unusual and highly believable characters. Try to be original, and try to keep it as "canon" light as you can get away with. A fighter who is a typical mercenary, willing to do anything for gold can get boring, one that is strangely pious to a particular diety is less likely too. An RP server isn't about who's the most powerful as much as it's about who's the most entertaining, so if your bard finds himself pitched out the window of a jealous husband's bedroom onto three "default" warriors just returning from ending a minor goblin menace, the character I'll remember and want to see again is that bard, you can always find more default warriors.
