  • New Players not RPing?

Maybe its just me, but I have seen a lot of new faces (which is good) around here. I have been trying my hardest to do several things and just the other day found someone to help me with.

After about 10 minutes, our small group had grown to a large group. That large group wanted to go somewhere different. That is not the problem. I truly believe the reason the others wanted to go into the forrest was to level.

As I recall, there was no good reason to go IC, and I needed to say IC to finish a quest (which I understand will ultimatly result im my ganing a level... but RP wise I had a good reason).

I didn't think leveling for the sake of gaining a level was a good thing, and I wounder why many of the new people do this. I try very hard to RP my character in some sort of something that makes sence, but going into an area that will result in my death and immediate XP loss is not exciting to me.

Maybe I just needed to rant for a moment, but I would like to hear your thoughs on the topic.

I think this is the kind of thing that resurfaces periodically.

Remember, RP means different things to each of us. To some, the combat and leveling is part of the RP experience.

I think it's great that you look for IC reasons to go out fighting. But, this server is designed to accommodate different types of players.

My only suggestion is to lead by example and not get frustrated.

I'm kinda with you on this one Cade, I've seen this alot lately. More than once I've turned down a group for RP reasons despite the fact that it really was not in the interest of my character's advancement. I remember clearly one person who I was grouped with prattle on constantly, IC, in south california valley speak... it was annoying. However PL makes good points as well, I think when we run into this we really need to try to show other's how to RP by RPing even when they don't. In the end, poor RPer's usually learn or leave. And it's better if we can teach them.
Lately the only thing that keeps me from wishing for a worldwide disaster... is that it would probably interrupt my network connection

the only exception I'd add here is that an evil alligned character could be intent on gaining power through practice and challenges (or a heavy fighter type/mercinary). But, I guess that depends a lot on how you RP your character is RP'd. That a difficult situation to RP. But, I'd say if your character doesn't want to go, decline them and RP something else. Eventually, they'll get higher lvl where they have to RP and they'll see the light...or the darkness

Heheh. Trust me, after a while here constantly rp'ing, anyone who jumps into the server will seem a poor rp'er to you. Just the natural circle of life type of thing. Don't let it bother you, just help them out with some kind advice and hope for the best.

Because if they ever catch the attention of a DM during an event with "omg, pwned!" they will find themselves up a creek leading into a waterfall several hundred feet down with hungry carnivorous alligators and pointy rocks without a paddle or a prayer.

            Whew.

Although I haven't seen many new RPers around lately (I haven't been on), the lack of spelling and punctuation in some of their welcoming posts bothers me...

Oh well, I have faith that the DMs will ruthlessly murder any un-RPing n00bs they come across.

                  stfu n00b! ur ghey ok?!

Seriously though, all it takes is a millisecond and the press of an extra key ('), and the posts become vastly more intelligible. How hard can it be? It's a shame there's no God of Linguistics in FR, otherwise I'll powerbuild a cleric and have him smite heathens...

You haven't read many of my posts then have you?

*chuckles* It's really not lack of education, its a lazy lack of caring enough to go back and proof read.

Yeah.. When I first came to Sundren it was like jumping into a pool of sharks. First time RPer, first time D&Der. I had to rely on everyone that was setting an example and then learn from them.

Slowly, but surely, I adapted their RP methods, learned how to spell and punctuate a little better. Even learned a few new words. This server is definitely a learning experience and the best way to teach the new guys is by setting a good example. I'm sure that is how a lot of us have learned on this server.

Just keep up a good example and people will follow.

Just think of it like this, for every 1337 speaking, non-punctuating person that passes through this server, that finds something good about it and stays, i one more person on the internet who will be more likely to use fairly proper english.

Many people who start out not really knowing what's involved in playing on an RP server end up as excellent players.
