I'm going to have to disagree with you that love can't be something that is given... In fact, I think love should be an unconditional feeling of being drawn to someone else's character (it can include physical attraction too, but really doesn't have to). Expecting anything in return makes it somewhat false. The desire to be close to one you love doesn't fall under expectations of course, as long as you don't demand those hopes to be mutual. I also want to add that I completely agree with the point made earlier that when you love someone you care more about their well-being than your own.
The bond between a parent and his or her child(ren) is almost always one of caring and protection. Wishing to do everything you can for them is a natural 'duty', more or less. They do have a place in your heart without a doubt, but I don't see that as true love. It can become true love if you care so much about them that you'd feel the same way about them even if they weren't your children.
