  • Becasue - "Favorite" typoes

Do you have any words that drive you insane because you can never seem to type them correctly no matter what you try?

"Becasue" (because) is one of them for me, "ahve" (have) another.

    Drives me NUTS it does!

Of course I also once mistyped waiting for a "reaction" in a rather embarassing way and at a really intense time in the middle of dramatic RP... (swap the first two letters... what do you get... well, almost anyway... uh huh, yeah... really sort of killed the mood.)

    What are your favorites?

Chani Kalera- Intimidation is the new diplomacy. *looms*
Eleanor "Bloody Elle" Lark - Why is the rum always gone?
Yolanda Brown - If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. But unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is going to suck.
    Astrid Hammerhand - Och!

#1 - You're and Your. Sharringtonm is the biggest culprit for this. I'm sure you'll notice some dialog in Sundren contributed by people who use the incorrect spelling for this. It was not me! I have superb language skills!

Your is posession, you're is not.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I agree whole-heartedly with Saulus. It's not the "speed-typing" mistakes that aggrivate me, it's the misuse of homonyms.

rogue/rouge (I guess some people like RPing makeup)

            two/too/to (grammar nazi)

            you're/your (grammar nazi)

            there/their/they're (can cause genuine confusion)

its/it's (its is possessive, it's is a conjunction)

apostrophes, commas, and semicolons (IMO, nothing makes something harder to read than comma splice errors. Unfortunately, teaching people the proper way to use them can take forever.)

Also, English sucks as a language. It beats up other languages for vocabulary. It sets rules, then breaks them. I'd guess 1/4 to 1/2 of all English words are non-phonetic. And, these:

            Pronounce "love" please.
            How about "dove"?
Are you sure? What about "stove"?

Speed typing is almost always interpretable based on context. They did this cool study using an example. I forget where I read it, but people really can handle a lot of transposition on the fly to get comprehension.

              For example:
I wsa goign to the Sotre and bouhgt a cheese dansih.

              Can anyone NOT understand that?

Yeah, misuse of homonyms is a sign of poor education. Often I am tempted to correct them but feel that might be condescending. Some of my favorite RPers do it, but I don't let that influence my opinion of them.

If I remember correctly it has to do with your brain automatically rearranging the letters, or your brain just needs to see certain letters grouped together. I've read whole paragraphs like that from one of those studies, it's kind of fun.

[grammarnazi]"they're" and "their" are homophones, not homonyms. "bat" and "bat" are homonyms. And, apparently, "dove" and "dove" when discussing birds and pools are something called "homographs."[/grammarnazi]

                      *smacks self

Right, I meant homophones darnit. Thanks for the humiliating correction.

*wanders off to a corner and places pointy cap on head

Homographs? Thats a new one. (intentionally leaves apostrophe out of Thats to annoy the grammarians and because it is easier that way, but then realizes that typing all this explanation is actually a lot harder and really wishes he would have just added the apostrphe, but what the heck. Its funnier this way!)

(left the apostrophe out AGAIN! MUAHAHAHAHA!)

Well, I was actually talking about typoes that I myself frequently make that I can't seem to type correctly - not because I don't know, but simply because my fingers are too fast for my brain - as opposed my toenails curling when reading certain frequently made errors.

But I've got my own pet peeves too, never fear

Your / you're and there / their / they're, jumping around tenses, and so much more *jumps on MKart's wagon*

                        and the top one:

                        its / it's.

Its - third person singular possessive ("I had a bike and its color was red", "Fate reared its ugly head")

It's - "it is" or "it has"

But, what I've also seen on the server I played on before was many, many players who showed a dramatic improvement in their (not there) writing over the time they played there (not they're).

So, all you parents out there, your kids are really studying, and learning stuff when they play these games!!!

Probably completely unrelated, but I was laughing like a lunatic when someone in IRC typed something along the lines of "shits into a wolf."

                          They meant "shifts" of course.

I've made a few words which are alike to others with a letter missing. Shit/shift has been one.

If I'm rping I'll often purposefully misspell something, but only in an attempt to make the person read it aloud to make it sound as if it were with the inflections of the character.

Just what I like to do, sorry if it confuses anyone or annoys ya, but its how I rp ;D
