Two songs (I wouldn’t dare to ask you to listen to 5 on a genre you are not familiar with), that I consider as the highlights of greek music of the 20th century.
The first one, from the late 40ies, Akrogialies Deilina, by Vasilis Tsitsanis here,
Unfortunately I didn’t find a better version on youtube, so this one will have to do.
I ll try to translate the lyrics as I know that most people here are not native greek speakers
The dusk is falling
the night is unfolding darkness on the world
a foreign girl
like a shadow, is wondering alone
With no shame, she seeks to find
the lost sun,
searching in the darkness
She may have been bewitched
by sunsets and sea shores
her heart held by them
eternally enslaved
Or maybe, maybe
she is crazy by now
and then, who will ever
ask to learn why
(I sincerely hope mr Tsitsanis will not raise from his grave to come and smite me)
The second one, Evdokia's Zeibekiko by Manos Loizos, here.
This one is instrumental, so there is no need for me to desecrate any lyrics.
The youtube clip is from the Evdokia movie (so yeah, the zeibekiko is part of the soundtrack), late 60ies-early 70ies I think, and I feel that it is worth watching it all and especially the detail in the last scene, with the innkeeper stopping the music (damn! I want to play a character who looks like that)
