  • Oh lawds you wants a Vista?

I'm making this thread to vent my rage against the Vista OS!

Most people will tell you that the only problem with Vista is that it's a huge RAM whore - For the most part, this is true. However it seems that the other big flaw that's a bit hush-hush is that it's NIC compatability sucks!

So if you're planning on using Vista - Avoid at all costs relying on your motherboard's onboard NIC! It's become a very common problem amongst people using laptops with onboard wireless NICs (But not limited to these people)! Microsoft has kept it's mouth shut for a very long time about this. The 'Unidentified Network. Acess: Local Only' problem is extremely common for everyone using onboard NIC

Though this is a problem easily fixed by purchasing a compatable PCI card NIC ( Check reviews, not the description. Lots of them lie to you. ) Which will empty $20-25 USD from your wallet. Not expensive, and your internet will run a bit faster, but the point is that I don't want to spend extra money just to have the internets.

Some people manage to get their onboard NICs to work with Vista, however, there are literally hundreds of solutions that could work depending on the MB. Seriously, google 'Unidentified Network Local Only' with no apostraphes and see what comes up. I've been punching myself in the cock for about two weeks searching and trying several solutions. I'm giving up and am buying a PCI card NIC! Damnit!

tldr; Want internet with Vista OS? Buy a well reviewed PCI NIC, don't rely on onboard NICs. Other than that, Vista seems to rock hard. (I like not having to tweak my boot.ini to support more RAM or tweak my router/computer to optimize my internet connection)

Why does Vista insist on detecting and installing my sound card *every* time I boot. Its driving me crackers.

It's not Vista or MS' fault that some manufacturers don't have support for the OS. Personally I've had no problems in the driver department. I've pulled out network cards that are 10 years old and still had Windows Update find 64bit drivers for them.

Besides... who wants a laptop with Vista anyway? You put XP on a laptop. Vista is only good for gaming if you want DirectX10

Sure, but releasing an OS that actually support less stuff then the OS its replacing? Thats just not right is it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Vistas, but it is a problem caused by Vista, not the manufacturers (Can be confirmed by googling it or calling your ISP). They are compatable, but somewhere along the line (most common timeframe is after a week, but some will show symptoms after two months) Vista will stuff it in your NIC's pooper rendering it useless until you fool around and try to figure out what it did and manually reconfigure it.

Seems to only happen on onboard NICs though, so to avoid it all together grab a PCI card NIC.
