  • Concerning Tolernance

Here is the post I was making when the thread was locked:

Simply put, a project where the manager defines constructive criticism as 'only what I want to hear" and doesn't take the time to evaluate others complaints and criticism, and stifles their comments, is asking for his project to fail unless he is the only one involved. The server is a society, made up of players as well as Saulus. We deserve the right to speak freely without being banned for it unless we use foul language or personal attacks. We deserve to be treated like friends or at least colleagues not be dismissed out of hand.

I completely agree with you, and I think I've expressed similar opinions before on these forums; if I had believed that Saulus' post was in violation of the perspective that you just shared, I would, without doubt, take your side on the matter -- however, I do not suspect that is the case. I do not believe Saulus was trying to say that feedback and constructive give-and-take is forbidden or unnappreciated.

What I believe Saulus was trying to get across, was that constructive criticism is not interchangable with bitch, whine, and complain, and as an intelligent person, I'm sure you can understand and respect the difference. Summarily, I think it comes down to what my elementary school teachers always used to say to me, which was "It isn't what you say, but how you say it", and I think it is demonstrated on these forums well enough.

The difference in response is monumental when only the wording is changed. When person number one says "This server sucks because Kangleton is an idiot", and person two says "This server could be improved by removing Kangleton", it would go without saying that person two is following the guiding concept of constructive criticism rather than bitching, whining, and complaining like person one.

We have a Suggestion Forum and a Bug Forum here, each capable of pointing out and correcting a mistake or oversight on the part of the Dev team, and both forums have recieved positive feedback from all staff, including Saulus, as long as the posts made are indeed constructive, and appropriate.

I honestly don't believe that your observations are entirely accurate, Shad. Constructive feeback and criticism are accepted.

That's exactly what Saulus was pointing out. That people aren't just giving constructive feedback.. that they're insulting others and himself.

I didn't use foul language or personal attacks with what I said, but the thread was locked within minutes. A free exchange of ideas is a necessary basis for fair relationship. Also, I was banned personally for something that was in a private message to another player, not for any action I took on the server, not for an exploit, not for metagaming or any message I posted on the boards. I was banned because I forwarded a message to another player I got from a DM and said 'this makes me mad and I feel like posting this so everyone can see'. I never posted it, the private message was read by site admins, and I was banned on the basis of sending that message to a single player and asking him what he thought of it. Thats arbitrary and unfair. Thats whats wrong with declarations that criticism will be met with banning.

Locked, see my reply in the other thread for details.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
