The Circle of Eight were a group formed/led by Mordenkainen, whose purpose appears to be to maintain the balance of Law, Chaos, Good, and Evil. It was the successor to Mordenkainen's first group, the Citadel of Eight, which fell (according to Mord) because ulterior motives got in the way of the group's intended purpose.
The actual membership of the group is rather secretive, and apparently nobody ever knew the full extent of the membership roster, however, the first nine members of any fame were:
- Mordenkainen (the leader)
- Bigby
- Bucknard
- Drawmij
- Leomund (left before Tenser joined)
- Nystul
- Otto
- Rary
- Tenser (joined after Leomund left)
