Follow-up: Hmm, now that I look at the question again, I don't think those are the answers.
Are we allowed to guess more than once? It isn't explicitly stated, but the second half of rule 3 suggests we can only guess once per question. And rule 7 suggests that after you read my post, it will in fact be explicitly stated if it needs to be. :P

Trick question. All the classes from the 3.5 Player's Handbook, excepct sorcerer, were available in First Edition. Paladins, Monks, and Rangers were "base" classes.
Bards were a special class. You had to duel class from a fighter to a thief, to a magic user, then a bard. They were pretty bad ass.
Barbarians were in the original Unearthed Arcana I think. The one ability they had I remember was "Summon Barbarian Hoard." Does that sound beast as hell. . . that is because it was.Byrun - Wandering Swordsman
Falrenn Silvershade - Shaper of Truths
If you're searching the lines for a point
Well, you've probably missed it
There was never anything there
In the first place
Wax Fang - Majestic

I think theres a misconception of which first edition were talking about. There is the First Edition dnd circa late 1974. This was the original book, which I have never seen, then the basic "red" box, expert set, masters set, and two others I don't remember anymore. In 1977, Advanced dnd came out which had paladins and let demi humans be real classes.
Which first edition are we talking about? My answer is from the 1974 version.

Sharrington has indeed answered correctly and gains 2 points.
EDIT: Yes first 'first' edition had only seven available classes, Mage(or Magic User
), cleric, fighter, theif (not rogue), Elf, Dwarf, or Halfling. I know because I am looking at the original book from 1974 right here!
