I just finished R.A. Salvatore's "Streams of Silver". I liked it better the first time when it was called "The Fellowship of the Ring".

      Try reading a good book.

The books are all so enjoyable to read. They're actually -fun- books.
"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."

Or re-read the Harry Potter series.

1-It has no emo "I'm going against the very concept of my race" characters.
2-No wizard in Harry Potter has sexual intercourse with any goddess of magic.
3-A whole lot of characters die. Not just the bad guys.
4-The hero wins not because he is super-powerful, but because he is surrounded by people that are better than him at magic.
        5-Emma Watson is pretty.

I'm going to finish "The Halfling's Gem" because...well, because I bought the trilogy.

If anyone has a suggestion for a book with a lot of rogue/thieve characters in it I am all ears. It would be good background reading for my character.

Try the Lankhmar series (Fafard and the Grey Mouser), old school classics... plenty of roguery, touches of humour...

....first written about way way before an emo drow with twirling scimitars, and even before halflings with rings- 1939 I think..

If I remember rightly, theres even a story with a wererat thieves guild- schweeet!

I suggest reading sci-fi novels instead... or maybe the Pratchett books as Kaldaris said
              I got one leg missin'
              How do I get around?

I recomment G.R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

I really like them, since there is no good and evil, just conflicts over personal goals.

Well, there is something evil...the Others, but they don't play a big part yet.

I wait for the next book....

                  Mija - wandering musician (M.I.A.)

Is that series still not finished? I remember reading the first one at least 10 years ago... sounds like he's pulled a Wheel of Time to me. Are there 74 page descriptions of the particular dress that each one of the characters is wearing?

OOOO I was reading a history text book the other day. Something on the Crusades from the Muslim perspective. Fun read.

In the D&D vein, I'd recommend City of Hawks, if you can find it. It's an old volume about the younger years of Gord the Rogue, one of the more famous characters in D&D during the 80s. I'ts by no means a great work of fiction (I've yet to encounter a D&D-themed book that is) but it's a fun read.

                            H. P. Lovecraft and Frank Herbert, you newblets.
                            Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

                            Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

Did not include Lovecraft because he is not a casual read, his writing style borders on clerical and is very dull to some people, however gripping and interesting it is to others.
