  • Alignment Comparisons

Since Some of us are having issues with Contemplating Alignments, I thought this might be a fun discussion. Below are names of famous/Infamous People (Real and Ficticious) in which you can surmise their alignments and compare it to the thoughts of the other players. To reply to this thread post the "Abbreviated" Alignment next to the name of said person/character. 1. "V" (film "V" for Vendetta"): CG - As an activist who goes against the established order to give freedom back to the people.

          13. "Bill" (from Kill Bill): LE - As the "old-school" leader of an organisation of assassins who had no qualms about shooting through the head the mother of his child because she left him and the Deadly Vipers.

          18. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (President of Iran): LE - If someone cares about tradition and is conservative to the extreme, it's Mahmoud... Religion, rights of minorities and women, his views are inflexible and he is the kind of leader that will crush any opposition amongst his people. Bane must be proud. :P

          20. Tyler Durden (Film "Fight Club"): CN - (*spoilers*) Tyler is literaly a defense mechanism, the creation of someone who lives such a *meep* life that Tyler came up in his mind to probably distract himself from suicide. Making him stray away from his ordered life and horrible desk job, Tyler makes him relish in the freedom felt through brawling, then drives the main character into activism to shatter the very order on which our society is based (ergo it's not against good or evil, but against law itself).

          23. O-Ren Ishi a.k.a Cottonmouth (Film "Kill Bill volume I): LE - One of my favourite vilains (probably because Lucy Liu is ever so hot). While not responsible for the murder of her parents and the possible reasonning it would've given for her revenge, the assassin career she took therafter qualifies her automatically into Evil. Her cold, mannered behavior makes me think she's probably Lawful, after all she certainly had the talent to work on her own instead of joining the Vipers.

          25. Dalai Lama (Current): LG - I don't think I need to explain myself

          27. Lucky the Leprechaun (Lucky Charms): CE - He obviously wants kids to eat stuff that's not good for them and develop bad habits that will later in their life transform into severe health problems.

          31. Agent Smith (film "The Matrix"): LE - If he was Good he'd have helped Neo once he'd have been freed. If he had been Neutral he'd have went into hiding in the Matrix as the french guy did. His speech before the famous scene of the Burly Brawl tends to indicate to me that he puts much importance on the "purpose" which drives everyone's act and defines them; he seems to act as if his doings are what he must do, a natural order that he must obey. Yet he cares for no one, except all his himselves. ^_^

More later... this is a tiring exercise :P

I'll just go for the ones which jump out. Some of my choices might seem strange, but what the hey!

            1. "V" (film "V" for Vendetta"): CG

            2. Arthur Pendragon (King Arthur): Which version?

            3. Morganna Le Fey (Legend of Arthur): As above

            4. Richard Nixon: LE (He had a code, but did some nasty stuff)

            5. Benito Mussolini: LE (As Nixon)

            6. Rudy Giulianni: LN

            7. Duke Leto Atriedes (film/novel "Dune"):LN

            8. Hilary Rodham Clinton: Not going there

            10. Ghengis Khan: CN

            11. Sun Tsu (Art of War): TN

            14. Queen Elizabeth I: LE (consider the vast expansion in the slave trade she sponsored)

            18. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (President of Iran): LE

            20. Tyler Durden (Film "Fight Club"): CN (Pure Anarchist)

            25. Dalai Lama (Current): LN

            30. Roy Batty (film "Bladerunner"): CN (I felt bad for the replicants)

            31. Agent Smith (film "The Matrix"): LE

            34. Karl Marx: LG (Favoured order, just not the prevailing one, and wanted people to be better off!)

            35. Friedrich Nietzsche: TN

            36. Yoda: LN

            37. Ferris Bueller (film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off): CN

            42. Bob Marley: CG

            43. Travis Bickle (film "Taxi Driver"): Too hard, which point in the film?

            44. Alex de Large (film "A Clockwork Orange"): CE (but that kinda misses the point of the film)

            45. Sam Lowry (film "Brazil"): LN->CN (as the film progresses)

Just curious, why did you put the current Dalai Lama and Yoda as Lawful Neutral? Are they not extremely compassionate characters, are they not pillars of light for their people? The Dalai Lama has been traveling around the world to ask for the liberation of his oppressed people, and sponsors arguably one of the most peace-oriented religions.

              That's just what I think.

                  15. Maximus Decimus Meridius (Film "Gladiator") : LN

                  19. Hatake Kakashi : NG (maybe LG) he uses to follow orders but he can choose not to follow them to save his friends. (answer to rustediron).

                  36. Yoda : LG

                  53. The Kurgan : CE
Zorn Terinus - the arcane scientist

                    22. Martin Luther King Jr.: LG

This guy would basically be a L/G cleric who wants everyone to embrace peace and end hatred.

                    26. Tom (Tom & Jerry): CE

He would go out of this way to make the mouse have a bad day half the time. Alot of times destroying the house and disobeying rules of his "Owners" until the owners would come back and beat da shit out of him or threaten him with expulsion. He could only respond to punishment which generally means Chaotic.

                    29. Shaka Zulu (Warrior King of the Zulu Tribes):

L/E or L/N. He basically conquered africa by force (Evil) but he did it to rebel remove the Brittish taint (Also Evil). He seemed lawful in mentality though.

                    36. Yoda: L/G

Sorry, Lawful to the extreme, and good mostly for the 1- 3 episodes which went more into his personality. He was patient with people, loved children, etc.

                    38. "KHAAAAN!!!!!" (film "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan"):

Hard core L/E. This is a pimp among pimps for L/E. I'd vote him one of the best cinematic villains of all time

                    40. Spike (anime "Cowboy Beebop"):

T/N, He wants to be left alone by the world and brings criminals to justice for the money, not the law abiding. I can't see this guy doing good or evil for a cause and in the end he died seeking stuff that only revolved around himself.

                    42. Bob Marley:

N/G, I say neutral good because he was working to elevate life, but the Rhasta movement is littered with rebellion and freedom on the path to peace and has guidelines of how to live to reach it. This is a difficult one since L/C is subjective so I guess it would take heavy analyzing.

                    54. Madmartigan (film "Willow")

Couldn't decide if he was C/G or C/N. I think in the long run he was C/G but in the beginning he was C/N because he was a thief, liar, etc. In the end he was risking his life for the greater good, helping willow and that baby and crap. So he was definitely a good guy.

                    56. Airk Thaughbaer (film "Willow")

This guy was L/N to me. He seemed to be a "Soldier" who would serve his lord no matter what. He seemed not to care for others beyond his duty. "Sit in your cage and rot" he said to Madmartigan, 'You think you and this peck can do something against the evil?" and junk like that.

                    57. Willow Ufgood (film "Willow")

This guy was N/G or L/G. He seemed to obey structure but at times he'd get chaotic and do wierd junk. I dunno.

Yoda: The concern is for order in the use of the force rather than goodness. Yoda is always stressing that things should be done in a certain way... tradition and balance. In the face of overwhelming evil threatening order, he ends up looking like a goody two shoes

The Dalai Lama: This one's tougher... And I'm not going there in this forum

If I only saw the original trilogy, I would say L/N for Yoda. However, in the new trilogy he is definitely compassionate and good. I think most of the Jedi's tend toward good. Suffering of people cause them pain, like when planets are destroyed, Obiwan using his mind tricks to get the guy to rethink his life, etc. They definitely tend toward good alignment. Remember that you have to do good things to unlock the true power of the force in their eyes for the most part. I also think if you play KoToR you get a better understanding of a Jedi since the movies don't go that deep into it.

                              3. Morganna Le Fey (Legend of Arthur):

                              Neutral Evil

                              11. Sun Tsu (Art of War):

                              True Neutral

                              22. Martin Luther King Jr.:

Neutral Good -- Though MLKJR used some unlawful means of fighting, this isn't because he wanted to, it's because lawful means were not available to him and had failed to work in the past. He was left with no other choice, but he did work through lawful means when it was a better choice.

                              26. Tom (Tom & Jerry):

                              Chaotic Evil

                              31. Agent Smith (film "The Matrix"):

                              Lawful Evil

                              32. Elvis Presley:

                              Chaotic Neutral

                              36. Yoda:

Lawful Good. He was more lawful than good, as Machiavelli pointed out, but I still believe he leans enough good to be on the good scale.

                              51. Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc):

                              Chaotic Good

                              58. Sam Gamgee (Novel "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring"):

                              Chaotic Good

                              59. Elrond (Novel "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring"):

Lawful Neutral. If he was more chaotic he could have just pushed Isildur into the fire when Isildur chose to keep the ring. If he was more good he would have gone on the quest to destroy the ring instead of sending other people off to do it while him and the elves ran away.

                              60. Aragorn (Novel "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring"):

Neutral Good. Lawful quite often, but willing to do chaotic things if that was the better choice.
