ok nerds i need help! i removed my cd/dvd drives from computer to clean them, (and yes its a dell) after i put the cd/dvd drives back in, the computer said iam missing drivers for one of the cd drives a sony cdw 216E and it wont play cds or dvds. The other one works. what is worse i can not find the driver for this cdr ANYWHERE and yes ive checked with dell.

any help would be greatly apriceated.

It may be a bit of a pain to retype, but could you tell us what exactly is the text of the error message you get? Do you get it when you insert a CD and try to open it with Windows Explorer? Do you get it when Windows starts? Otherwise, here's a thing or two you can check:

1- Make sure you plugged back your CD and DVD drives exactly like they were plugged when you removed them.

2- About all pre-assembled computers come with a pack of CDs which contain the drivers for everything that comes with your machine (video card driver, motherboard driver, etc). If your CD & DVD drives were part of the PC when you bought it, the drivers ought to be somewhere amongst those CDs. Otherwise, about all hardware companies have a Download/Drivers section on their official site with what you need.

thats funny thing i do not get a error msg, it just wont play and cds or dvds it shows it as a drive and says that its drive d sony cdr 216e thats what is confusing. Ya went even to the dell site they offer a tool to fix the cdr but it doesnt work. and sony doesnt have this model as a choice for drivers, i think this may be a model they only make for dell. (ive seen this before with other items )\

That rules out #1, you have plugged your CDr drive correctly if it shows as a drive. I'm kind of flabberghasted (whatever that means) about this... I guess I'm not a real nerd. :P

Have you checked that the master/Slave between the two drives is correct?

You would probably have all the drivers for the computer on a single dell cd.

If you're not getting any message, it may not be a driver thing. Maybe the drive is just failing? Or you might have screwed it up when you cleaned it

well iam pretty sure i didnt screw it up when i cleaned it i did read something about a registry edit that needed to be delted to allow the dell to work with the send cd drive but iam not messin with that lol

yes both drives are set to cable select.

Alright if you have your cd rom drive in correctly master and slave wont matter as long as it show under teh device manager

what you need to check...

# 1 deos it say "cd drive" "cd/rw" "dvd/rw" "dvd" under device manager in windows...

IF: it deos not show the correct recognition

Then: you need to go to dell... go to support page.... go to drivers... the select your pc model.... the download the cd rom driver for you pc... BOTH of them and manualy intstall via the device manager...

You will not click the install button from the filess you download instead you will go to device manager update the driver and select specific location... then select the file and the windows version you are running the device manager will automaticly pick up the dll or sys files needed and you will be good to go....

P.S to get to device manager right click the my computer icon and select properties then on the tabs select device manager. if you have windows xp.... if you have vista then reply there is a slightly diff process
