  • Death of a faithful computer; bright new future!

As I struggle to type this on a nook tablet, I morn the loss of a faithful overdriven computer. It had survived years of overclocking and even been dashed to the floor by a crazed woman.
Now I get to build a new machine!
Various ideas. I could stick with AMD and support the underdog while building a gaming machine able to run anything I like to play, such as various strategy games.
Or delve into the unfamilar world of intel. I am not familar with the current crop of video cards and as of this last week been slowly educating myself on CPUs from hardware sites on the web via a cell phone. No easy task!
Can you guys throw me some tips for some hardware? I plan to work in price range of around $1500 for a complete build, less monitor.
    Thanks

      Seconded.

That's always my starting point when attempting to construct a new rig.

Though, I'm waiting to upgrade until DDR4 and the associated chipsets become a tad more available.

I could likely revive my computer with a new motherboard. Upgrade the video card and be good for a couple more years. But I have a good reason to build up now. Any advantages of windows 8 over win7 ?
Or build a new computer, and revive the old one for a experimental Linux machine.
The i7 4790k or i5 4690k look like a logical choice for a new computer build.

If you're building a desktop, I wholly recommend not going the route of Windows 8.... especially if you have 7 already. Intel is solid, by all means, and my next rig will likely be one, whenever I can afford a rebuild. Up until now, I've been an AMD girl, and honestly it's never done me wrong- but if you can afford the i7, you're going to get more punch for it.

Not particularly. In my observation (and a little bit more), Windows 8 is designed for portable touchscreen devices. The breakdown comes that all those handy gesture-sensitive swipe-commands, large number of full-screen apps and programs, and large easily poked buttons instead of a start-menu gets rather annoying and impractical to use with a proper mouse-&-keyboard desktop setup. Particularly when you are using a standard non-touch-screen.

Unless you enjoy building your own PC (and since you overclocked yours, you may be someone who enjoys tinkering with your PC), I don't believe the cost savings these days for building your own versus buying is worth it. I bought my son a decent gaming desktop from Digital Storm and it's been great. Buying the machine from them versus building it myself was <$80 difference. Just a thought.

Mmm- I guess I speak from the camp of one who absolutely adores being up to my elbows in computer guts. I don't really overclock, or fall in the silent pc camp; but I definitely prefer building over buying. It's less a cost saving thing for me, and more of knowing precisely what went into the machine, because it was all my choice. Not to mention that there is then none of the bloatware I must go in and invariably strip out. But, for those who look at building as more of a chore, I can see your point.

What's wrong with Windows 8? I've never had a problem with it, sure it's a little confusing at first but I've grown to love it. Windows 8 streamlines system integration with other windows products.

All my new computer parts arrived yesterday! It will be much more of a machine then I will need. 4790k intel, gtx 970 video. 16 Gb ram. 480GB SSD. Other misc high performance parts. Built for over clocking if I so wish. I'll be sure to drop in once I get it running. A friend gave me a unopened OEM version of Win 7 64 professional, so that choice is made.

Microsoft is doing a promotion this summer where windows 7 and 8 users may upgrade to 10 for free, if they wish. FYI!
